Chris Mitch Member since:May 16, 2011Total points:56 (Level 1)I have a male betta fish and two snails. When I look over at the tank the betta fish is staring intently at one of the snails on the bottom of the tank in its shell. He doesn't nip the snail at all, just sits there and stares at it, or lays next to it on the bottom of the tank. He is an active fish who loves to swim around and dance and show off, but why does he lay at the bottom of the tank alot and stare at the snail? The other snail is at the top of the tank, as it has moved there, but he thinks nothing of it. He only stares and lays next to the snail at the bottom of the tank. He will swim around happily for a little then come right back and stare, lay next to, or near the snail. Why does he do this?Answer Question

Sounds like your betta is fascinated by the snail and simply enjoys observing him. I think it's pretty cute and have never found it to be a problem or indication of one. Bettas are strange like that, they form attachments to all sorts of strange things. I actually had one who was nothing short of infatuated with a suction cup holder for a filter. He'd stare at it, swim around it and spend a great deal of time with it. When I tried to remove it, he went in to a frenzy, and repeatedly threw himself at the glass to get near it after it had been placed next to the tank. Quite odd, I know... Nothing to worry about at all though!

by Joylynn Member since:November 22, 2010Total points:1,680 (Level 3)is it a big snail or a little snail? Betas will actually hunt and eat small snails and I've heard of them nipping mystery snails. They do actually stalk them and then yank the small snails out of their shells.

I wish I could find something mine would attach to and quit glass-surfing ;-;"
that's really adorable how what he stuck to ended up being living though :DSome of them do that for some reason. Mine has recently attached to a rock in the tank. He lays on it. swims around it and attacks me if I move it.

by Kathryn Member since:April 07, 2011Total points:329 (Level 2)some bettas do this. My betta has become attached to his betta log. Your betta can be sleeping too. Fish can't blink because they don't have eyelids, so it looks like they are staring, but they are either sleeping or just resting for awhile.
