George Fields used to open up holes for teammates.
That was before he started bursting through them.
For the past couple years, Lowell?s latest No. 6 ? the uniform number worn by most of the program?s star running backs ? has utilized his 4.5 speed to become one of the top backs in the area.
?I was a lineman all the way through Pop Warner,? said the senior, who rushed for over 1,800 yards and 21 scores last season.
?When I got to ninth grade, I told them I was a running back, so the coaches said they?d try me out there. Back when I was a lineman, I never really thought I?d ever be a running back.?
The main reason Fields was a lineman was because Matt DeSomer ? Andrean?s star quarterback ? was Lowell?s top running back in middle school.
?Back then, I thought about being a back at times, but I knew Matt was really good, and I liked blocking for him,? Fields said. ?I trusted him and he trusted our offensive line. That?s what these guys do for me. I trust them with everything. Without them, I couldn?t do anything. I take great pride in having (my linemen) block for me.?
Fields said his years as a lineman really helped make him a better running back.
?I always learned which guys I had to block, which guys I had to go for, and where the running back was going behind me,? he said. ?From the running back?s point of view, I know where the linemen are going just from where I am behind them.?
Lowell head coach Keith Kilmer claims there?s a lesson to be learned from how his star running back?s position changed during his career.
?He didn?t give up,? Kilmer said. ?I think he always wanted to be a running back and he kept working hard. You never know what will happen in the future. When the opportunity came to him, he took it, ran with it, and I think that?s pretty neat.?
Kilmer realizes exactly how important Fields is to the ultimate success of the Red Devils this success.
?He?s a tough-nosed kid on the field ? a durable back who can carry the load,? Kilmer said. ?He takes a pounding, but at the same time, he has the ability to change the game.?
