It took more than two years to become a Loreto nun. After spending six weeks in Ireland learning the history of the Loreto order and to study English, Mother Teresa then traveled to India, where she arrived on January 6, 1929. After two years as a novice, Mother Teresa took her first vows as a Loreto nun on May 24, 1931. As a new Loreto nun, Mother Teresa (known then only as Sister Teresa, a name she chose after St. Teresa of Lisieux) settled in to the Loreto Entally convent in Kolkata (previously called Calcutta) and began teaching history and geography at the convent schools. Usually, Loreto nuns were not allowed to leave the convent; however, in 1935, 25-year-old Mother Teresa was given a special exemption to teach at a school outside of the convent, St. Teresa?s. After two years at St. Teresa?s, Mother Teresa took her final vows on May 24, 1937 and officially became ?Mother Teresa.? Almost immediately after taking her final vows, Mother Teresa became the principal of St. Mary?s, one of the convent schools and was once again restricted to live within the convent?s walls.

For nine years, Mother Teresa continued as the principal of St. Mary?s. Then on September 10, 1946, a day now annually celebrated as ?Inspiration Day,? Mother Teresa received what she described as a ?call within a call.? She had been traveling on a train to Darjeeling when she received an ?inspiration,? a message that told her to leave the convent and help the poor by living among them. For two years Mother Teresa patiently petitioned her superiors for permission to leave the convent in order to follow her call. It was a long and frustrating process. To her superiors, it seemed dangerous and futile to send a single woman out into the slums of Kolkata. However, in the end, Mother Teresa was granted permission to leave the convent for one year to help the poorest of the poor.
In preparation for leaving the convent, Mother Teresa purchased three cheap, white, cotton saris, each one lined with three blue stripes along its edge. (This later became the uniform for the nuns at Mother Teresa?s Missionaries of Charity.) After 20 years with the Loreto order, Mother Teresa left the convent on August 16, 1948. Rather than going directly to the slums, Mother Teresa first spent several weeks in Patna with the Medical Mission Sisters to obtain some basic medical knowledge. Having learned the basics, 38-year-old Mother Teresa felt ready to venture out into the slums in December of 1948.

Mother Teresa started with what she knew. After walking around the slums for a while, she found some small children and began to teach them. She had no classroom, no desks, no chalkboard, and no paper, so she picked up a stick and began drawing letters in the dirt. Class had begun. Soon after, Mother Teresa found a small hut that she rented and turned it into a classroom. Mother Teresa also visited the children?s families and others in the area, offering a smile and limited medical help. As people began to hear about her work, they gave donations. In March 1949, Mother Teresa was joined by her first helper, a former pupil from Loreto. Soon she had ten former pupils helping her. At the end of Mother Teresa?s provisionary year, she petitioned to form her own order of nuns, the Missionaries of Charity. Her request was granted by Pope Pius XII; the Missionaries of Charity was established on October 7, 1950.
Helping the Sick, the Dying, the Orphaned, and the Lepers:
There were literally millions of people in need in India. Droughts, the caste system, India?s independence, and partition all contributed to the masses of people that lived on the streets. India?s government was trying, but they could not handle the overwhelming multitudes that needed help. While the hospitals were overflowing with patients that had a chance to survive, Mother Teresa opened a home for the dying, called Nirmal Hriday (?Place of the Immaculate Heart?), on August 22, 1952. Each day, nuns would walk through the streets and bring people who were dying to Nirmal Hriday, located in a building donated by the city of Kolkata. The nuns would bathe and feed these people and then place them in a cot. These people were given the opportunity to die with dignity, with the rituals of their faith.

In 1955, the Missionaries of Charity opened their first children?s home (Shishu Bhavan), which cared for orphans. These children were housed and fed and given medical aid. When possible, the children were adopted out. Those not adopted were given an education, learned a trade skill, and found marriages. In India?s slums, huge numbers of people were infected with leprosy, a disease that can lead to major disfiguration. At the time, lepers (people infected with leprosy) were ostracized, often abandoned by their families. Because of the widespread fear of lepers, Mother Teresa struggled to find a way to help these neglected people. Mother Teresa eventually created a Leprosy Fund and a Leprosy Day to help educate the public about the disease and established a number of mobile leper clinics (the first opened in September 1957) to provide lepers with medicine and bandages near their homes. By the mid-1960s, Mother Teresa had established a leper colony called Shanti Nagar (?The Place of Peace?) where lepers could live and work.

Just before the Missionaries of Charity celebrated its 10th anniversary, they were given permission to establish houses outside of Calcutta, but still within India. Almost immediately, houses were established in Delhi, Ranchi, and Jhansi; more soon followed. For their 15th anniversary, the Missionaries of Charity was given permission to establish houses outside of India. The first house was established in Venezuela in 1965. Soon there were Missionaries of Charity houses all around the world. As Mother Teresa?s Missionaries of Charity expanded at an amazing rate, so did international recognition for her work. Although Mother Teresa was awarded numerous honors, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, she never took personal credit for her accomplishments. She said it was God?s work and that she was just the tool used to facilitate it.

Controversy:
With international recognition also came critique. Some people complained that the houses for the sick and dying were not sanitary, that those treating the sick were not properly trained in medicine, that Mother Teresa was more interested in helping the dying go to God than in potentially helping cure them. Others claimed that she helped people just so she could convert them to Christianity. Mother Teresa also caused much controversy when she openly spoke against abortion and birth control. Others critiqued her because they believed that with her new celebrity status, she could have worked to end the poverty rather than soften its symptoms.

Despite the controversy, Mother Teresa continued to be an advocate for those in need. In the 1980s, Mother Teresa, already in her 70s, opened Gift of Love homes in New York, San Francisco, Denver, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for AIDS sufferers. Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, Mother Teresa?s health deteriorated, but she still traveled the world, spreading her message. When Mother Teresa, age 87, died of heart failure on September 5, 1997, the world mourned her passing. Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets to see her body, while millions more watched her state funeral on television. After the funeral, Mother Teresa?s body was laid to rest at the Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata.

After Mother Teresa?s death, the Vatican began the lengthy process of canonization. In this Maryland home, in what's considered a nicer neighborhood just outside Washington, D.C., a father and daughter were murdered in 2002. The subsequent owner was shot and killed there in 2010.

Days after closing on his dream home ? a brick colonial near the Washington, D.C., school he was toiling to save ? principal Brian Betts learned of his property?s ghastly past.
Inside the house, 11 months earlier, an intruder had shot and killed a 9-year-old girl and her father. Horrified, Betts demanded the transaction be rescinded. When that effort failed, he invited two ministers to pray over his new place. Then Betts tried to paint over the grim history, refinishing the woodwork and refurbishing the kitchen.
Seven years later, in April 2010, a robber shot and killed Betts in his bedroom.
?In Maryland, there?s no obligation on Realtors to disclose that a murder took place at a home, much less two murders ? and subsequently three,? said Rene Sandler, an attorney for Betts' family. ?Brian was just getting to know his neighbors when one told him he was surprised someone bought the house given what had happened. Brian was absolutely shocked. His Realtor never said anything.?
Last February, the same house sold again, this time at almost $200,000 below asking price.
Welcome to a macabre corner of American real estate, a legally gray, emotionally black sector governed by a mishmash of varying state laws that dictate whether agents must divulge that bad things went down in what the National Association of Realtors calls ?stigmatized properties.?
Only two states, Alaska and South Dakota, mandate that sellers? agents reveal whether a homicide or suicide occurred at a listed home within the previous 12 months, according to NAR spokesman Walter Molony. In Connecticut, Delaware, New Hampshire, North Dakota and Oklahoma, if a prospective buyer asks about past bloodshed, real estate agents must truthfully answer the question.
?In most states, a seller isn't required to voluntarily disclose nonstructural issues such as homicides on the property,? said Holden Lewis, a real estate expert at Bankrate.com, a consumer finance service. For example, he noted that Minnesota law says "the seller doesn't have to disclose that the property was the location of a suicide, death or ?perceived paranormal activity.? ?
In Maryland, where Betts was shot to death, agents must inform buyers only about ?material facts they know or should know,? said Chuck Kasky, vice president of legal affairs for the Maryland Association of Realtors. When it comes to Maryland properties, he added, a murder is ?not a material fact.?
The reason some agents are reluctant to mention such former horrors? Money, of course. Many buyers would be uneasy if not queasy about living in a space where a life ? or several lives ? ended in a disturbing way, even if the tragedy happened years before.
Such ?psychologically impacted homes? languish longer on the market than comparable properties and sell for about 3 percent less, according to a study authored in 2000 by two professors at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Their peer-reviewed paper, based on an examination of 102 ?stigmatized? homes in Ohio, was published in the Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education.
Those 102 homes took, on average, 45 percent longer to sell than comparable properties without grisly pedigrees, said one of the authors, James Larsen, a finance professor.
But a homicide home?s value dip can be even steeper if it?s located in a rural area where violent crime is less common and neighborly gossip echoes for generations, contends Bennie Waller, a professor of finance and real estate at Longwood University in the central Virginia town of Farmville, population 8,200.
?There?s a country song (by Miranda Lambert) that says, ?Everybody dies famous in a small town.? In a town this size, it?s an informal communications network, and things get around pretty quickly ? even without cable,? said Waller, who has studied the real estate impacts on two local homes where killers took lives.
In 2009, four people ? two parents, their daughter and the daughter?s friend ? were bludgeoned to death in a home not far from Longwood?s campus. The 20-year-old murderer, an aspiring rapper who later pleaded guilty, knew the daughter. Before the crimes, the home was tax assessed at $240,000. Later, it was auctioned to an investor for $104,000 but it remains on the market, unoccupied, due to the emotional scars left by the homicides, Waller said.
At another house next to the school ? ?a fantastic property? with a swimming pool, Waller said, Robert Bruce shot and killed his wife in 1991. Locals still refer to the residence as ?the Bruce house.? That place is tax assessed at $200,000 but was similarly sold at auction for about $90,000. It, too, remains empty.
?My wife and I actually looked at (buying) it,? Waller said. They jointly decided not to make an offer.
?I?m a finance-real estate guy so I looked at it from an investment perspective. My wife is my wife,? Waller said.
If it were to come down in price, Waller said he would reconsider buying it.
"I don?t care what people say," he said. "But it would probably be an investment rather than a property we would live in. Because college kids don?t give a damn (about its gory past). I could put six kids in there, (rent it) and make money.?
While those two infamous Farmville homes remain available, Brian Betts? family had preferred that his two-story, three-bedroom house in Silver Spring, Md., simply vanish after his death.
?The family?s wishes were to essentially have it bulldozed for who ever was going to acquire that property to just start anew,? said Sandler, the family?s attorney. However, the principal's estate still owed money to the bank for the home's mortgage.?
Despite good schools nearby and its?locale in an upscale neighborhood popular with federal workers, ?it sat on the market for a very, very long time,? Sandler said. ?And (in time) the house went to foreclosure.?
Fannie Mae acquired the property, and in May 2011, it was listed for $515,000. It sold in February for $330,000, according to Zillow.com. The family believes that buyer knew about the property?s history.
?Two things really bothered Brian about the purchase. He was an educator, an educator who truly made a difference in kids? lives ? I mean something for the movies,? Sandler said. ?Knowing that a child was murdered in that house, much less a child and her dad, really impacted him.
?But then you have the piece where it was just intentionally not disclosed,? she added. ?This was a Realtor that Brian was on friendly terms with, not somebody he just picked at random. So that level of deception, if you will, was very unsettling.??

How to communicate properly using email How to communicate ...
Whenever I conduct a business productivity workshop, I talk about the ?do?s and don?ts? of email communication. I?ve spent many years at a large organization where email was misused in a number of ways which lead to drastic declines in productivity. Email is a great communication tool, but it needs to be used in a proper manner in order to be effective. For many of you, the recommendations below will seem very basic, but I still wanted to share some guidelines for proper email communication because there are, unfortunately, a large group of people who don?t follow them. If you want to know more on how to follow some of the advice below in Microsoft Outlook 2010, you can watch the video called ?Communicate properly using email?.
1. Think of the ?subject? line as a ?summary? line
Every email has a subject line that many people use to determine whether or not they should read the email, save it or delete it. Think of the subject line as a summary of your email and try to add as much context as possible for the recipient.
For example, instead of just writing ?Meeting notes? in the subject line, write a more descriptive subject like ?Meeting notes from 2012 Strategic Planning meeting on Nov 10th?. This way the receiver can determine in an instant what to do with the email.
2. Be brief and to the point
Many business professionals are likely to receive over 100 emails a day. If you want your emails to be read, you need to make them brief. Read through the email before you send it and ask yourself if there is any way you can make it shorter and more to the point. In some cases you might want to attach a document with some of the text if you feel this is essential information that needs to be included in the email.
3. Make sure follow up actions are clearly articulated
Many emails contain follow up actions assigned to various people. If these actions are hidden in the text they stand a big risk of being missed. Make sure that all action items are clearly articulated with proper ownerships and deadlines. If you add this in a table it?s very easy for everyone to see.
To save time, I?ve added a ?follow up action? table template into Microsoft Outlook 2010 that I can easily insert into emails.
Everyone who has an action item assigned to them should be added to the ?to? field of the email. You might want to add some people to the ?cc? (short for carbon copy) field if you believe they should have a copy of the email. Personally I feel that copies of email are being sent too often and for the wrong reasons, so I recommend you use the cc field sparsely.
4. Check your spelling
In my eyes it?s very unprofessional to send out email messages with spelling errors, especially since most email clients today have built in spell checkers that can help you correct your spelling mistakes.
If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2010 you can enable the option to ?Always check spelling before sending? an email. This way you will be prompted if there is a spelling mistake in your text before you send an email ? it?s a nice ?safety net?.
5. Add a signature to your email
Make sure to add a proper business signature to your email. The signature should include your full contact details ? including the email address. Make sure that the email hyperlink (mailto:) contains the correct email address. It?s happened numerous times that I?ve clicked an email address link in a signature and the address is someone else?s.
6. Add an automatic reply if you are unable to respond
If you are traveling, attending a conference, or just busy on a project and you are unable to respond to email within a reasonable time frame (I would say about one-two business days depending on the nature of your business), I recommend that you add an automatic reply to your email. This sets the right expectations and it enables the sender to contact someone else in case they need to get a rapid response. If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2010 with Microsoft Exchange 2010 you can add different automatic replies inside and outside the organization.
A final note on email communication
As a final note I would like to add that written text always sounds much harsher then the spoken words. You should never write an email to someone when you are upset, you might regret it the day after, and when you do, there is no way to take it back. Also, make sure to be polite, use proper greeting phrases and refrain from using abbreviations or jargon (at least when you are communicating with people outside your organization).
If you follow these tips you will have come a long way and I can assure you that you will be much more effective in your email communication.

Researcher finds timing of ADHD medication affect academic progress

A team of researchers led by an epidemiologist at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and University of Iceland has found a correlation between the age at which children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) begin taking medication, and how well they perform on standardized tests, particularly in math.
The study, titled, "A Population-Based Study of Stimulant Drug Treatment of ADHD and Academic Progress in Children," appears in the July, 2012, edition of Pediatrics, and can be viewed online on June 25. Using data from the Icelandic Medicines Registry and the Database of National Scholastic Examinations, the researchers studied 11,872 Icelandic children born between 1994 and 1996. The children started medication for ADHD at different times between fourth and seventh grades.
The findings showed that children who began drug treatment within 12 months of their fourth-grade test declined 0.3 percent in math by the time they took their seventh-grade test, compared with a decline of 9.4 percent in children who began taking medication 25-to-36 months after their fourth-grade test.
The data also showed that girls benefited only in mathematics, whereas boys had marginal benefits in math and language arts.
"Children who began taking medications immediately after their fourth-grade standardized tests showed the smallest declines in academic performance," said the study's lead author Helga Zoega, PhD, Post Doctoral Fellow of Epidemiology at Mount Sinai's Institute for Translational Epidemiology. "The effect was greater in girls than boys and also greater for children who did poorly on their fourth grade test."
Stimulants are widely used in the United States as a therapeutic option for children with inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity associated with ADHD. The medications are less frequently used in Europe, although their use in Iceland most closely resembles the U.S. Long-term follow-up studies of stimulant use and academic performance are scarce, according to the researchers.

Parenting is not how i imagined it! - Family - Support Groups
Im wondering if anyone else had these huge ideals of what kind of parent they would be-and then never became that type of parent.
i always try to do as much as i can for my kids-worry about them-but i know i spend so much time worrying about the future-that i dont enjoy present. i also am not the cool, fun mom i wish to be. im not supermom.im am alot like my own mom lol which isnt a bad thing-but i never thought i'd be like her. I use to get so annoyed w. my mom when she worried or was nervous person--or when she was busy doing 10 things at once--and now i see myself doing the exact same thing. i always wanted to shield my children from pain, dysfunction etc--but this last yr w. issues w. their dad-being hurt/sick-they have seen me upset-and likely they were confused/upset themselves at the situation..
one thing i finally realized though that my kids are very resillent and egocentric. their under 6 so its normal for them to be self focused. They arent selfish-have empathy for others-but they view things only from their persepctive-and how it affects them. i felt so awful-that i was in hospital -then getting help=not w/them--thought they hate me or feel abandoned. But now that im home w. them- i realize my kids werent devestated. they were w. family-didnt really realize exactly what happened-and they were more worried about little things in their life-school-friends-their toys-my daughter was worried about not being able to watch dora in a new place lol. She didnt realize Dora could be viewed on any tv that got the channel. So i realize they will likely be ok-even if i cant provide them the perfect life, free of drama/sad things etc. I hope small stresses in life-will teach them that stuff happens but we can overcome it as a family.
i use to be a stay at home mother-but went back to school. Now im in school/working part time-and i was so worried that my kids would be sad w.me not home and-id be a bad mom. my biggest fear is that im a bad mom. but oddly somehow it all worked out. they like day camp-i still put them first-we have lots of time together -so it doesnt matter that im not home w. them. plus they are hitting the ages were they have friends-outside activities like classes-so they like socializing-and telling me about their day.
what i realize today is there is no one right way to parent-and most of us do our best and make it work. kids are resilient-and as long as they know we love them-and are securely attached to us--they will be fine.
im taking a lifespan developmental psych class over summer online--and few of my fellow students hotly debated whether parent shouldnt cuddle too much there kids-or if the new trendy attachment parenting is right way. We were suppose to be discussing attachment bw infant and caregiver==but some how it lead to parenting styles-and what is the right way.---i didnt mean it offensively to them--but who cares. its really a personal choice of a parent. I cuddled my kids, but eventually put them in a crib too--i was a teenager-so needed my moms/husband to help to learn how to be a mom-and was so overwhelmed that i did whatever would calm my son. my first was difficult-so he may have been cuddled alot-but he is secure, normal-not overly attached 6 yr old who is happy. First 5 mths of his life-he slept more w. me or his dad then in bassinet or crib-but he survived=learned to self soooth and is ok. Even w. breast feeding-health wise maybe little better-but doesnt matter-u will still have an ok happy kid-if u dont breast feed. I breast feed-but i would never judge a woman who chooses not too-or couldnt, what matters is parents caring-involved w. there kids. the kids who sadly are insecuely attached to parents or not all attached were neglected, abused, and some dont even have loved ones who care about them.
SO i am trying very hard not to over worry or get down on myself if i cant be the perfect parent-bc i realize there is no perfect parent.
i forgot to make my daughter a princess outfit for library fairy tale ball. My daughter had a huge tantrum bc she thought she couldnt go if she wasnt a princess. When drama subsided, I found my sons old knight custome=she went as a "knight" w. her brother's light up sword too-and had a blast==and said she didnt want to be a princess-she wanted to be a knight-so i realize things just work out-we all have to be resilient in this world.
sorry for tangent. i can be so hard on myself-and worry im not a good parent. but it just hit me-that when we worry-love our kids-and try our hardest--even if we make mistakes--we are ok--even good parents--and odds are our children are ok and happy =)
On aside note-ideal things i always wanted to do w. my kids-is over summer do car trip-travel-learn about different states. so i will try to do that some day. Maybe even this summer it could be a mini car trip/vacation. Main thing is im going to learn to be ok doing what works for me and my family, and stop feeling bad that im not super mom---or do things the same way everyone else does.
I also worry my kids will just value material things-so i want to start getting them involved in helping others-maybe get them involved in giving a toy to the poor or something like that.

The leader sits on the ground and swings a tetherball?over his head as he would a lariat rope close to the ground. Players join around in a circle within range of the circling tetherball. All players jump the ball and rope as it circles. If touched or knocked down by the ball, the players drop out. If a player jumps back out of the radius of the tetherball, he has fouled and must drop out. This continues until a single winner is declared. This is an excellent coed game with lots of action.
Novelty Program
Include a shoe scramble, a balloon relay, a barefoot marble-between-toes relay, a tow sack relay (get into sack up to waist, hold top, and hop), and a paper cup and water pitcher relay. For this last relay, give each person a paper cup. Have a water pitcher and a judge for each relay line. Contestants run to table with pitcher of water, pour a cupful, drink it, and return for the next person in line to repeat. A winner is declared when pitcher is empty.
Pocketbook Contest
This is a marvelous game for students and adults. It works well with a seated audience. Divide the audience into two more groups. Appoint a captain for each group. Call for items that may be?found in women?s purses of men?s billfolds. The first captain to secure from his group the items called for and race to the leader with them wins a point for his team. The leader should stand an equal distance from all of the?teams. Some items to be?called for can be?a twenty-cent stamp, a can of hair spray, a pocketknife, nail clippers, an emery board, a safety pin, a key chain with six keys, a paper clip, and an unopened package of gum.
Firing Line
Get the ?shooters? lined up into teams. Provide each team with a water pistol and a bowl of water. At a set distance (depending on the firing power of the pistols), set in pans of water a candle for each team. At a signal, the first player of each team shoots at the candle until he puts it out. While the candle is being relighted, the second player moves up and fills the pistol from the bowl. The winner is the team that shoots all the candles out first.
Chinese Balloon Carry (relay)
Each contestant must hold an inflated balloon between two eighteen-inch dowel sticks and carry it from a starting point to a finish line thirty to fifty feet away and back.
Skill Games
A whole evening social hour on a retreat may be built around skill games. Divide the group for competition and try some of these games. (Use masking tape for marking boundary lines.)
1. Tennis ball bounce?Try to bounce tennis balls in wastebasket placed on a chair fifteen feet away (ten points per basket).
2. Pie-pan roll?Using a six-foot circle marked on the floor, players stand fifteen feet away and try to roll the pans into it (ten points for each pan in the circle).
3. Jar-ring toss?From a distance of eight feet, each player throws six fruit jar rings at the neck of a plastic detergent container (twenty-five points for each ringer).
4. Muffin-tin toss?Each person throws six pennies into an ordinary muffin tin from a distance of ten feet (five points for each penny in the muffin tin).
5. Bird throw?From ten feet away, players toss six badminton shuttlecocks into a number ten can (fifteen points for each score).
6. Target toss?Players throw six washers at a six-inch circle drawn on the floor, standing fifteen feet away for each throw. (Score ten points for each washer in the circle; washers on a line do not count.)
Handball Dropout
Turn dining tables on their sides (to serve as nets). Use masking tape or chalk to mark boundary lines on the floor. A tennis ball or playground ball is the only other equipment necessary. Play regular Ping-Pong rules and hit the ball back and forth with the open hand.
Water Tunes
Divide the retreat/camp group into smaller groups of eight to ten players. Supply soft drink bottles, metal spoons, and water. Give each group fifteen to twenty minutes to fill their bottles with water and rehearse a tune. Each group then plays their tune for the others to guess the name.
Draw That Tune
Divide into two groups. Provide chalkboards or poster board and magic markers for use in drawing. Each group sends a ?drawer? to the leader. The leader gives the two ?drawers? a slip of paper with the same song title on it. The ?drawers? then rush to their own group and draw while their teammates try to guess the name of the tune. The group to name their tune first wins. Play several rounds, keeping score and using a different person to draw each time.
Use your imagination to work up unusual fun activities. Develop group spirit and be creative. A group of teenagers can take any ?germ cell? idea and make it blossom into a fun activity. Books on recreation are full of good ideas. This article is intended simply to start you thinking. Think, plan, and be ready for the unexpected, because there is nothing worse than dead moments on a retreat.

NATO to discuss downing of Turkish plane by Syria
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? NATO leaders will meet this week to discuss whether and how to respond to Syria's downing of a Turkish jet in what Turkey insists was international airspace. The incident has spiked regional tensions caused by the conflict in Syria, where reports Sunday said nearly 40 people died in new clashes between rebels and regime forces.
The jet's wreckage was found in the Mediterranean at a depth of 4,265 feet (1,300 meters), Turkish state media reported Sunday. The two pilots remain unaccounted for.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the jet was on a training flight to test Turkey's radar capabilities, not spying on Syria. He said the plane mistakenly strayed into Syrian airspace Friday, but was quickly warned to leave by Turkish authorities and was a mile inside international airspace when it was shot down off the coast of Latakia.
Syria insisted Saturday that the shooting was "not an attack" and that the aircraft had violated its airspace. But Turkish authorities say Syria didn't warn the Turkish plane nor send its own jets to confront it. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was expected to make a statement Tuesday and might announce some retaliatory steps.
"No one should dare to test Turkey's capabilities," Davutoglu said Sunday.
Meantime, at the request of Turkey, NATO's governing body will meet Tuesday to discuss the incident, said Oana Lungescu, a NATO spokeswoman. The consultations will focus on article 4 of NATO's founding Washington Treaty.
"Under article 4, any ally can request consultations whenever, in the opinion of any of them, their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened," Lungescu said. The North Atlantic Council ? the ambassadors of the 28 NATO countries ? will decide whether to respond, she said.
The last time article 4 was invoked was nine years ago ? also by Turkey ? after tensions with neighboring Iraq escalated. However, that case did not lead to the invocation of article 5, which declares that an attack against any single NATO country shall be considered as an attack against them all.
Despite some opposition leaders' calls for Western military intervention in Syria, the United States and allies have been hesitant to get involved in what could prove a protracted conflict, preferring the diplomatic route. Syrian allies Russia and China have already shielded Syria from U.N. sanctions and stridently oppose any military intervention.
It's unlikely the downing of the Turkish plane will change those calculations, despite Ankara's appeal for the NATO meeting.
In October 1989, two Syrian MiG-21s violated Turkish air space and shot down a Turkish plane on a geographical survey mission, killing all five crew members. Syria at the time promised to severely punish the pilots, who disregarded Turkish orders not to enter Turkish airspace.
Dogu Ergil, a professor of political science at the Ankara University, told private NTV television that Turkey had repeatedly sent its jets across the Syrian border for several weeks to show its military muscle at the time.
Turkey has been one of the most vociferous critics of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime as it has cracked down over the past 15 months on an increasingly armed popular uprising. Opposition activists say the conflict has killed 14,000 people, most of them civilians.
The plane's downing has already drawn international criticism from other countries pushing Assad to stop his crackdown.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Sunday he was "gravely concerned by the Syrian regime's action in shooting down" the plane and that Davutoglu had told him no warning was given.
"This outrageous act underlines how far beyond accepted behavior the Syrian regime has put itself, and I condemn it wholeheartedly," Hague said in a statement. "The Assad regime should not make the mistake of believing that it can act with impunity. It will be held to account for its behavior."
Hague met last week with United Nations and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan for talks on plans for an international summit, while British officials discussed the issue in Geneva on Saturday with members of Annan's team. Hague noted Sunday that "The UK stands ready to pursue robust action at the United Nations Security Council."
Italy's foreign minister decried the shooting down of the plane as "a further, very grave and unacceptable action by the Assad regime." In a written statement, Giulio Terzi promised that Italy will play an active role in the NATO meeting Tuesday.
Syrian activists reported violence in different parts of the country Sunday, saying nearly 40 people were killed.
The deadliest incident was in the northern town of Ariha where a shell hit a home killing seven members of the same family, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.? A video posted online showed the seven men's bodies, some badly mutilated, including one who had part of his head blown off.
Activists also reported intense shelling and clashes between rebels and troops in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour and the central city of Homs, which has been under a government attack for the past two weeks.
Earlier Sunday, activists said rebels captured a military base in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo, confiscating large amounts of ammunition. The Observatory said 16 government troops died in the attacks on the base near the rebel-held town of Daret Azzeh and nearby checkpoints early Sunday.
Area activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels had removed hundreds of artillery shells from the base. Saeed added via Skype that troops retaliated with intense shelling on the area using helicopter gunships.
On Friday, state media said 25 people were kidnapped by "terrorists" and killed in Daret Azzeh. Activists said the 25 killed were pro-regime gunmen known as shabiha.
Syria's state-run SANA news agency, meanwhile, said gunmen from Turkey clashed with Syrian border guards in Rabiah, a region in the coastal Latakia province. SANA said several infiltrators died in the late Saturday clash, while others reportedly returned to Turkey. It said several Syrian border guards were hurt, but didn't specify how many.
Turkey denies sheltering armed Syrian rebels, although many Syrian refugees have fled to camps on the Turkish side of the border.
Also on Sunday, Syrian opposition groups met in Brussels to hash out differences and plan for a democratic transition. The disparate groups are divided over whether outside military intervention would help or hurt and whether to engage in dialogue with Assad's regime. The conference, attended by some 50 people, will continue Monday.
Jordanian Information Minister Sameeh Maaytah, meanwhile, said Sunday that three other Syrian pilots had defected last week, even before a pilot flew his warplane into neighboring Jordan. He said the other three crossed overland into Jordan. He was unsure if the four pilots knew each other or had coordinated their escape from Syria.
