Postpartum Happiness and Maternity Leave | Being Pregnant
When I was pregnant with my first, I was a sixth grade teacher teaching science at a middle school. My daughter was due a few weeks after the new school year started, which meant that I was very pregnant at the school orientation to meet my new students and parents.
As I gave my speech on what to expect for the year as well as what would happen when I leave for maternity leave, I noticed ?looks? from moms around the room. As I opened the discussion up for questions, there were quite a few times when I was asked if I would be returning to work after the baby was born. Even though I covered that in the speech prior, these parents had doubts that I would return. They expressed their concern that I would fall in love with my little girl and never want to return to the workforce again.
They were right, but in only some ways. I did fall in love with my little girl, but I also wanted to return to work after my maternity leave was up. With my husband living over a thousand miles away from us, returning to work gave me the much needed adult time that I longed for at home. I loved my job and being able to educate others. It made my time with my daughter just that much more special when I picked her up after I got off work and on the weekends. Although it was a tough decision to decided whether or not to return back to work (I admit I did extend my maternity leave,) I know that it was the right decision.
Deciding whether or not to stay at home after the baby is born or to return to work can be a tough decision for many mothers. According to a new study, your postpartum happiness depends on whether you do what you really want to do in regards to returning to work or staying at home.
The research, conducted on 1,110 first time mothers at Brigham Young University and published in the journal?Human Relations, found?that 71 percent of the mothers were not doing what they really wanted to do in regards to working or not working after they had their baby. Of the women surveyed, the postpartum depression rates are much higher if a mother does the opposite of what she really wants to do, whether she stays at home or goes to work.
Twenty five percent of the mothers in the study experienced clinical depression when they did the opposite of what they wanted compared to only 14 percent who suffered from depression and were happy with their decision of returning to work or staying at home.
Although the decision is a hard one, some women have no control over whether or not they want to stay at home or return to work regardless of what they really want to do. Some moms have to return to work after the baby to help support the family, because we all know that having a baby is a big financial commitment. Other mothers can?t find work after having a baby and are forced to stay home.?It?s sad to me that this can affect their postpartum happiness, especially if you have no control over the situation.
I was fortunate to be able to return to work after having my daughter when I wanted to. The decision made me happier with myself and I think that it strengthened the relationship I shared with my daughter.

Browser bypasses put Google in privacy cross hairs
Privacy advocates, lawyers and powerful rival Microsoft were piling on Google on Tuesday for sidestepping Web browsing software to tailor ads for people signed into its online services.
The California-based Internet giant continued to staunchly defend itself meanwhile against accusations that it had put profit ahead of privacy.
Controversy ignited last week after it was revealed that Google ad-targeting "cookies" bypassed track-blocking software on Apple's Web browser for iPhones and computers was fanned by Microsoft saying Internet Explorer was likewise duped.
By Tuesday a suit was filed in US federal court demanding Google pay unspecified damages for violating the privacy of millions of people, and potentially national anti-wiretapping law.
Some researchers, however, said lashing out at Google did little to resolve a contradiction underpinning the complex situation -- people want free online services that know them but Web surfing that remains anonymous.
Snippets of code called "cookies" from Google and three online ad specialty firms slipped past tracker-blocking safeguards on Apple's Safari browser, Stanford University graduate student Jonathan Mayer said Friday in a blog post.
Microsoft on Monday said that a check showed that Google was bypassing anti-tracking mechanisms built into the Redmond, Washington-based technology titan's Internet Explorer (IE) Web browsing software.
"Google is employing similar methods to get around the default privacy protections in IE and track IE users with cookies," IE corporate vice president Dean Hachamovitch said in a blog post.
"Given this real-world behavior, we are investigating what additional changes to make to our products," he said.
Google fired back at Microsoft, saying that the company has known for years that the IE cookie blocking technique thwarted the functionality of modern websites such as Facebook and Amazon and that bypassing it was common practice.
"Instead of fixing (a) P3P loophole in IE that Facebook and Amazon exploited ...Microsoft did nothing," privacy researcher Christopher Soghoian said in a Twitter post, referring to IE's way of having cookies identify themselves.
"Now they complain after Google uses it."
Researcher Lauren Weinstein in a post at social network Google+ referred to Microsoft's complaint as seeming "disingenuous at best, and certainly is not helping to move the ball usefully forward regarding these complex issues."
Whether calculated or innocent, Google's sidestepping of privacy features on browsers raised alarms with consumer rights groups and has already prompted a call for an investigation by the US Federal Trade Commission.
Google discontinued use of the offending cookies in Safari browsers after Mayer's findings went public, and characterized the situation as an unintended side-effect of an effort to safeguard online privacy.
Google last year began using cookies in Safari browsers to let people signed into Google accounts get personalized services, such as being able to "+1" ads or other online content as likeable for friends at its online social network.
The plan was purportedly to provide users personalization requested while disclosing no information about them to Google-owned ad specialty firm DoubleClick.
Google reportedly did not realize was the presence of the cookies opened Safari browser doors to a slew of DoubleClick ad tracking cookies, which would otherwise have been rejected.
"The Safari browser contained functionality that then enabled other Google advertising cookies to be set on the browser," the California company said in a released statement.
"We didn't anticipate that this would happen, and we have now started removing these advertising cookies from Safari browsers," it continued.
Safari is the most widely used browser on mobile devices and the default browser on iPhones and Macintosh computers. The Apple browsers are pre-set to block tracking cookies.

Meditation Helps With Multiple Sclerosis
Meditation is a wonderful way to improve your life. I would like to encourage everyone to meditate twice, daily. Typical times to meditate are in the morning, right after you wake up and again in the evening just before bed. Studies have shown that there are definite benefits regarding meditation and treating the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis.
As you may know, multiple sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system. Myelin is being destroyed or injured and so the capacity of nerves to transmit impulses is lowered. MS affects people worldwide, with people being newly diagnosed daily. Many wonder what they can do to alleviate many of the symptoms of the disease. Meditation can help in dealing with the everyday aches, pains and stresses of the disease. A new study has shown that meditation can help patients with depression and the changes that come with the disease.
As the disease progresses, whether slowly or quickly, so do the symptoms that go along with it. People with MS (multiple sclerosis) can slowly get weaker as their power and strength deteriorates. Often, MS patients need help from relatives or friends simply because they get more and more exhausted from the disease and its symptoms. Some may eventually need a wheelchair if the MS manifests the symptoms or the medications they have begun do not provide the expected effect. Others may also become bedridden and mobility is lost. How do these patients continue to live their lives as fully as possible?
When you begin your teenage and adult life you also begin a journey of independence. As you move on in life, you may find your soul mate near you, but you are both adults living combined lives, while also maintaining your own individuality. You take many things for granted; simple tasks like going to the bathroom, making tea, taking a shower, cleaning the house, cooking, shopping and more.. How do people with multiple sclerosis do all this without help if they do not have the strength to do it all for themselves? They feel like a child, but in a grown-ups body. They feel life is unfair and depending on others so much can often lead to depression.
In a study regarding meditation and MS, a group of 180 persons diagnosed with the disease took part in a clinical study? The study was published on September 28, 2010 by the American Academy of Neurology. The patients were randomly separated into two groups, where they had meditation classes for a duration of eight weeks. Every week a trainer helped them with lessons and educated them about proper techniques and ideas of meditation.
One of the important things they were taught was how to live in the present moment without judgment. At the beginning of the study around 65% of the participants had different levels of depression or anxiety. During the program there was only a 5% dropout rate. In the end, they found that the patients depression was reduced to about one third, and the positive effects of meditation were still evident even six months later. Clearly, it helped the patients to see the beautiful inner side of their life and to let go of the judgmental and negative thoughts.
The results of this study reflect that meditation is a way to keep your mind in form, improving the effects of life. Those with MS can fight depression by meditating daily. Doing so will help you to see a difference in your life, even after a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis.

Larry Bock: Exploring Deep, Mysterious Realms With Time Warp Scientist Jeff Lieberman
With the human genome decoded, science is poised now to set sights on a more ethereal realm: human consciousness, one of the least understood facets of human cognition.
Deep within this frontier where brain and mind intersect, lie a host of questions and mysteries yet to be fully examined, including what it means to be human; the connection between art, science and creativity; human perception; artificial intelligence; and our relationship with religion, spirituality and the universe.
One researcher who is delving into these worlds with gusto is Jeff Lieberman, an MIT-trained scientist, engineer and artist who says our consciousness makes us who we are in the world, but that often our limitations as humans make us unaware of our potential and true uniqueness. As a result, "You may not be who you think you are," Lieberman told an audience earlier this year at a TEDxCambridge session where he explained the basics of his theories in consciousness.
Our minds are "thought-generating machines," he continues stressing "that the evolutionary utility of our minds is unbelievable," but that negative and counter-productive suffering comes as a side effect of these capabilities, keeping us separated from the world and from being who we were meant to be. "What would happen if we could turn off the machine?," Lieberman asks, "If we could transcend our individual experience of the world?"
Lieberman is currently working on specific testable mathematical hypotheses to further explore such questions, in addition to investigating the use of such technologies as neurofeedback to aid our ability to understand ourselves more deeply and to remove mental roadblocks to perception and self awareness.
Science buffs may know Lieberman best as the host of the show Time Warp on the Discovery Channel where he combines art and creativity with science and technology to help us see beyond the limits of our normal perception. Lieberman will bring his unique perspective on the future of human consciousness to the USA Science & Engineering Festival hosted by Lockheed Martin (the nation's largest celebration of science and engineering) this April in Washington, DC. There, at the Festival's finale Expo, he will conduct interactive presentations that will demonstrate the wonders and limitations of what we know about the burgeoning field of consciousness.
Lieberman, the holder of four degrees from MIT (a B.S. in Physics and Math, and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and Media Arts and Sciences), has gained worldwide recognition for his "technological sculptures," including the Cyberflora, a garden of robotic flowers built with enough artificial intelligence to react when a person enters the room, and for the Motor Learning Robotic Wearable Suit -- robotic clothing which accelerates motor skill learning.
In addition, through his skill in high-speed photography and music, he is helping to pioneer a new genre of music and perception known as "pastoral electroacoustic."
Lieberman is a prime example of the myriad researchers on the leading edge of science and engineering who will be taking part in the USA Science & Engineering Festival to inspire future innovators and educate the public. The Festival's finale Expo weekend celebration, no ordinary event on April 28-29 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, will be replete with a bevy of hands-on excitement in science, including 2,000 exhibits and stage demonstrations, which will culminate the Festival's month-long series of nationwide activities.
In addition to hands-on encounters with other fields of science and engineering, the Expo will also include exciting presentations in the realm of human consciousness, perception and artificial intelligence -- such as the following:
Encounters With Robots. Interact with Ada and Grace, two virtual museum guides from the National Science Foundation who will greet and converse with visitors, including answering questions about exhibits, computer science, and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). In another presentation, with Aldebaran Robotics, meet NAO, a fully interactive, versatile, and fun humanoid robot that is able to see, hear, speak, feel and communicate using the most advanced technology.
Ilusion vs. Reality. Sleight-of-hand maestro Apollo Robbins, who once picked the pockets of Secret Servicemen while entertaining a former President, takes you inside what is real and what is illusion -- and how the brain is often tricked. In a related presentation, sensory perception researcher Beau Lotto of London College University demonstrates how optical illusions via color games shed light on how the brain works.
Science of the Senses. A stunning array of exhibits by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) explores the mysteries of smell, taste, touch, hearing and sight perception.
The Secret Science Behind Special Effects. Hollywood stuntman Steve Wolfe takes you behind how movie stunts and special effects trick the senses to appear real on film
Learning Through Magic. Prominent educator Alan McCormack teaches kids tenets of science through magical demonstrations from the adventures of Harry Potter.
Multimedia Extravaganza. Don't miss multimedia maestro DJ Sleeper as he blends (and bends) video and audio into a new way to perceive and communicate science.
Come join us at the Festival in April to discover why some experts believe that understanding human consciousness and perception may be science's last frontier -- that in mastering it we will be well on our way to understanding the human mind as a whole. Now that's something to think about.

The Making of The Artist - Flickering Myth Movie Blog
?The first person I had to convince was me, and think, ?Okay, even if everybody thinks it is undoable, I am going to try because I really want to do it?,? stated French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius who began developing The Artist (2011) about eight years ago. ?When I started to think about what this silent film would be, I had two possibilities; either pure entertainment, a spy film in the vein of Spies [1928] by Fritz Lang which inspired Herg? to create Tintin or a film dealing with more serious issues, probably involving more work. This was more appealing to me because as a result we would move away from OSS [his previous two movies were espionage spoofs involving a clueless French secret agent codenamed OSS 117]. I wanted to work with Jean [Dujardin] again but didn?t want to end up doing the same things. I didn?t want this project to be perceived as a whim, or a gimmick, so I started looking for a story that could fit into this format.? Other factors needed to be taken into consideration for Hazanavicius. ?My main concern was not to be too complex with the story because if it gets too complicated you need words. What was liberating was that it didn?t have to be realistic. It?s in black-and-white, its period, and people are moving their lips but you?re not hearing them. This is not realistic so you can play with other things that in normal movies might be considered ridiculous, too symbolic or clich?d.?
?I decided to work on a story of a silent movie actor, which [would] make things easier for the audience, because it makes sense to watch a silent movie when the story is about a silent movie actor,? revealed Michel Hazanavicius who read a lot of biographies on the actors and directors from the cinematic era to help provide him with a ?springboard to the imagination.? ?I watched a hundred silent movies; the ones that aged the best were melodramas and romances,? commented the writer-director. ?It was always about the story rather than the character. In terms of research, I knew [Charlie] Chaplin and [Buster] Keaton, but the discovery was seeing silent cinema, dramas like Sunrise [1927] and The Crowd [1928], which were more minimal and had a real purity of performance. Valentin [Jean Dujardin] is based on Douglas Fairbanks, who was very happy in his own skin and content to make the same pantomime movie again and again. It was good to know there was another silent acting style to help build a bridge to modern audiences.? The key was to find the right cast. ?My starting point, linked with the desire to work once more with Jean [Dujardin] and B?r?nice [Bejo], was: a silent movie actor who doesn?t want to hear anything about the talkies. I circled around this character but as soon as I got the idea of this young starlet and the crossed destinies, everything fell into place and made sense, even the themes pride, fame, [and] vanity. I wrote the script very quickly, it took me like four months, which is very short for me. I knew that I could shoot every sequence with no dialogue, so at the end of the writing, I said, ?Okay, I think I can do it.?? Hazanavicius confessed, ?My [original] title was Peppy and George. It was nice and old fashioned, but a little too simple.? He adds, ?To do a silent movie, you have to have more expressive actors. John Goodman, Jean Dujardin and B?r?nice Bejo are very expressive, and when they talk, you can feel what it?s about.? French actor Jean Dujardin reflected, ?It?s quite pretentious isn?t it? The notion the audience is going to be interested in you for an hour and a half. Think too much about that and anxiety takes over. I?m happiest on set because I?m not myself. I?m someone else.? Dujardin relied on his costumes and the shooting locations to help him with his cinematic performance. ?I lived with a slick black haircut which was really short in the neck and a little thin moustache; that and spending time in those big houses in the Hollywood Hills got me into the skin of this actor.? Bejo agreed with her co-star. ?For us as actors, and even for the director, it gave us a sense of authenticity to what we were doing because we were talking about Hollywood and we were in Hollywood.?
?After my previous movies, I met some producers, and felt that they were scared a little bit,? recalled Michel Hazanavicius. ?Then I met Thomas Langmann, who was the right person; I could see in his eyes that he was hooked, and really wanted to see that movie. When I met John Goodman, he said to me, ?I?ve never seen this movie. That?s why I want to do it.?? Goodman remarked, ?I was intrigued, and then after the meeting I was more than willing to jump on because it was different. And what the hell, I didn?t have to learn lines. ?I?m your boy. Sign me up.?? The American actor enjoyed his role in the picture. ?The older I get, the more I appreciate what came before. I?m fascinated by these guys who started everything. I just read a biography of Cecil B. DeMille. He was a two-bit starving actor who couldn?t make it; he just happened to know some people. He directed some things. They were going to Flagstaff, Arizona. It was raining so they wound up here.? In regards to his canine companion, Jean Dujardin stated, ?There was a lot of improvisation with Uggie, like when I put the dog on the table or sometimes I follow him [or] sometimes he follows me. I had a lot of treats in my pocket. We worked with Omar [Von Muller], the dog trainer.? B?r?nice Bejo embraced the creative challenge imposed upon her. ?I like it very much when acting is not conveyed solely through dialogue but by the body, the walk, the attitude, [and] the precision of each gesture.? Bejo received assistance from her filmmaker husband. ?Michel always knew which music to play. For the scene where I get off the bus and arrive at the studio for an audition I think he played Day for Night. It?s so cheerful that I was immediately transported. It gave me wings!?
?I worked with the same composer for twelve years now,? stated Michael Hazanavicius when referring to his collaboration with Ludovic Bource. ?He?s my friend. But we almost killed ourselves for this one. Here, the music is the right hand of the image. The images and the music tell the story together.? A different technique was utilized by the filmmaker. ?I was very precise. Like, ?When he puts the butter here, and he looks at her, and the music has to start here.? Or for example, when he puts the fire on the film stock, the composer started the music when the fire began, but I said, ?No, no, put the fire when he gets the idea.?? Cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman did not use old cameras during the principle photography. ?There?s a guy at Panavision who?s a technical geek about those kinds of movies,? remarked Hazanavicius, ?and he did some alteration of the lens for us which gave us some distortion in the image. I used it, for example, when the lead actor contemplates suicide the shot of the gun and of the dog, there?s a small distortion.? Not all of the modern conveniences were employed. ?It?s not so much about the technical aspects. It?s more about the way you conceive things. I didn?t use a Steadicam, for example, because a Steadicam shot doesn?t make sense to me in a period movie. For the crane shot, it was a very modern crane and it goes farther.? The footage was converted afterwards. ?I used colour film after a lot of tests. We always say black-and-white, but actually it's about the greys. To have all the nuances of grey and to be able to play with it, we shot in colour, and then in post we went to black-and-white.?
?When we were doing the preparation of the movie, we didn?t have all the money so we were looking for all the solutions possible, and 3D was one option,? revealed Michael Hazanavicius who contemplated the idea for about two weeks. ?I thought it could be great. I imagined it as a very special image, a very new image, but fortunately, I didn?t have to do it.? Made on a budget of $15 million The Artist has earned $61 million worldwide. ?My job was to make the movie. That?s what I did. I know what we did in France was to have the maximum screenings just to let people talk about the movie and say they enjoyed the movie.? Hazanavicius observed, ?You can?t remake films exactly the way they were made 90 years ago. Audiences have been exposed to so much; they are sharper, quicker and a lot smarter. It?s exciting to stimulate them. The films I like the most are when the directors wander around and dare to make what they want while respecting the genre throughout.? The silent movie has become an awards circuit sensation receiving 10 Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Jean Dujardin), Best Supporting Actress (B?r?nice Bejo), Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, and Best Original Score; at the BAFTAs the awards list was replicated along with additional nominations for Best Make Up & Hair, and Best Sound. The Golden Globes were equally enamored lauding the 1920s tale with Best Picture ? Comedy or Musical, Best Actor ? Comedy or Musical (Dujardin), and Best Original Score while also handing out nominations for Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Bejo), and Best Screenplay. ?This is a period movie, made now,? stated the French filmmaker who contended for the Palme d?Or at the Cannes Film Festival while his leading man won for Best Actor. ?The way I wrote this movie, I tried to respect the spirit. I tried to respect the melodrama, the structure, even the Hays Code, in the way that there is no kiss. It?s a very sweet romance. It?s very old fashioned.?

Free Market Health Insurance Provides the Best Vehicle for ...
In recent weeks, Obamacare?s contraception mandate and its conflict with religious liberty has been the center of debate. In late January, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius released a statement indicating that rather than expanding religious exemption from the mandate, she was instead going to provide religious institutions more time to comply with the mandate.
Rush Limbaugh referenced a post at Ricochet yesterday on his show as part of his discussion on DHHS?s contraception mandate and how the Catholic Church has reacted. The author, Paul A. Rahe, notes how the Catholic Church embraced Franklin D. Roosevelt administration?s introduction of Social Security. Rahe suggests that the indirect consequences of FDR?s Social Security had a domino effect that impacted Catholics? (and all Americans? in general) view of family roles in caring for elderly parents and subsequently their view of sex and contraception. Additionally, he suggests that acceptance of FDR?s policies also generated a sentiment by some in the faith community that ?public provision is akin to charity?.
Beyond the indirect effects that FDR?s policies had on the faith community, his policies had direct impact on health insurance mandates as it relates to employers. Sally Pipes at the Pacific Research Institute notes:
During World War II, wage controls prevented employers from rewarding workers with salary hikes and enticing new workers with cash. So companies started offering health care benefits as a way around the law.
Roosevelt?s wage controls caused employers to seek new ways for business to attract qualified employees, and now, this has become the norm.
Pipes goes on to note that this norm has subsequently has made it harder for people to leave their jobs for fear of losing their insurance, made wages lower, and stifled business creation. Health insurance has become tied to employment rather than to the free market. President Obama?s health care reform approach and its numerous, burdensome regulations?be it on contraception or health insurance premium requirements?have only provided a means to incrementally lead the nation towards total government run healthcare. What the Obama administration has done to insurers and employers is akin to tying a runner?s shoelaces together and telling her to run a marathon.
The free market provides an alternative to both the far reaching effects of the Roosevelt administration and the recent effects of the Obama administration. A free market approach to health care?as opposed to government or employer related approach? means that individuals can purchase the health care that is most appropriate for themselves and their families. The Heritage Foundation recommends that instead of employer related tax exclusions for health care, the federal government should provide tax credits for individuals and families according to their income and the number of children they have. They also suggest that health insurance be able to be purchased across state lines, providing even greater room for competition between insurers and subsequently lower costs. This would then allow each individual or family to purchase the health care plan that is most suited for their needs and budget.
Beyond the economic benefits, a free market based health care system provides the best vehicle for religious liberty. When health insurance is detached from employment, it means that employers?be they religious institutions or religious business owners? have no requirement to violate their conscience by providing insurance that covers contraception and abortion causing drugs.
The same is true for individual health care consumers and insurance companies themselves. Individual health care consumers would have the option to purchase plans from insurers that either do or do not cover contraceptives. While individuals opposed to contraception would not desire contraception for themselves anyway, choosing a plan that does not cover contraception means the money they used to purchase health insurance does not have the potential to ?cross subsidize? contraception or abortion causing drugs.
?Cross subsidization? occurs when insurance premiums are pooled by the insurer and then dispersed to pay medical bills for those they insure, meaning that the money one pays in insurance premiums beyond what care they need may ultimately cover another individual?s care . Market based healthcare also provides health insurers with the freedom to abide by their conscience in what they will cover. Insurers who oppose contraceptives would not be obligated to provide coverage, and those who approve contraceptives would be free to do so. There is a market for both, and it would provide employers, individuals, and insurers the freedom to exercise their religious liberty.
The Roosevelt and Obama administrations have been all about control and government expansion. This is why Barack Obama once referred to the Constitution as a ?charter of negative liberties??because it constrained the ?liberty? of the government. However, the positive liberties extended by our Bill of Rights includes first the freedom of religion. The free market allows consumers the choice to exercise that freedom. The Constitution?s ?pro choice? provision is one that even we pro-lifers can get behind.
