Eurogamer 2011: Kid Icarus Preview : Videogame News & Reviews ...

Will This Game Make You Bark Like A?Dog?

Okay, so I won?t lie. Eurogamer was a dream come true for me. As a (fairly) early adopter of the 3DS, I?ve been quite dis?ap?pointed by the dearth of qual?ity soft?ware. While The Leg?end of Zelda: Oca?rina of Time 3D and Star?fox 64 3D are great remakes, they?re far from any?thing fresh and inno?v?a?tive for the system.

So I guess we should all be thank?ful that Masahiro Saku?rai is here to save the day with Kid Icarus Upris?ing. Or should we? Pit, the boy won?der of Angel Land is star?ring once again in his own game after what seems like an eter?nity, but has too much changed since the orig?i?nal (per?haps Saku?rai has added trip?ping?).? The game mechan?ics have come a long way since Pit last appeared in Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Mon?sters back in 1991 (Yes, we do realise that he is a playable char?ac?ter in Super Smash Bros. Brawl), and Kid Icarus Upris?ing is now an action shooter very much in the same vein as Sin & Pun?ish?ment.? If an enemy gets too close, you?ll auto?mat?i?cally switch to melee weapons, which are heavy-hitting to say the least.? Some of the game is on-rails, but there are areas where you are expected to move Pit from A to?B.

Firstly, the game looks fan?tas?tic.? It?s the most stun?ning game on 3DS by a long shot.? The fly?ing scenes are par?tic?u?larly strik?ing, mainly because there?s an incred?i?ble sense of speed as you zip over and under all sorts of obsta?cles.? In one part of the game, you fly above numer?ous ground armies, and the sense of scale you expe?ri?ence is like noth?ing seen on 3DS before.

Of course, when some?thing seems too good to be true, it usu?ally is.? And the prob?lem here is that while Kid Icarus Upris?ing looks great, it doesn?t fare too well in the con?trols depart?ment.? It uses a sim?i?lar setup to Metroid Prime: Hunters, whereby you use the joy?stick to move and the sty?lus to aim. While it does allow for pin?point pre?ci?sion, I just found this mode too clunky.? The 3DS isn?t the light?est hand?held (and admit?tedly, it being attached to the stand didn?t help) so pre?pare for hand cramp galore.? It is pos?si?ble to play with?out the sty?lus, but this mode is even more cum?ber?some, as you?re forced to hold R to aim, which then pre?vents you from mov?ing as freely.? It?s not hard to see why Nin?tendo is now releas?ing that addi?tional joy?stick add-on.

Still, it?s early days and we could see some refine?ment take place over the next few months.? Need?less to say, Kid Icarus Upris?ing was, oth?er?wise, an enjoy?able game?play expe?ri?ence.? The action is fast-paced and fun (not to men?tion pretty tough at times) and the over?all pre?sen?ta?tion is superb.? The game is fully voiced and although there?s some cheese?balls in terms of dia?logue, it?s pretty funny at?times.

The eas?i?est way to sum up Kid Icarus Upris?ing is to think of it as a smor?gas?bord of Nin?tendo fran?chises. The on-rails action and voice act?ing is very much like Star?fox 64, the shoot?ing mechan?ics and melee attacks echo those of Sin & Pun?ish?ment, and the (awk?ward) con?trols are sim?i?lar to Metroid Prime Hunters.

It?ll be inter?est?ing to see how the final prod?uct turns out when Kid Icarus Upris?ing releases some?time early next year.? Stay tuned to Bits ?n? Bytes Gam?ing for more infor?ma?tion as it?comes!
