Google On Microsoft?s Android Patent Tactics: It?s Extortion

extortion,%20selfEarlier today, Microsoft and Samsung disclosed that they reached a cross-licensing agreement over patents. The key point: it's a bad blow to the notion that Android is free. Instead, it's more like "free" with huge Android OEM partners like HTC and now Samsung agreeing to pay Microsoft to use Android. Google must be pissed off. And they are. Here's their statement:
?This is the same tactic we?ve seen time and again from Microsoft. Failing to succeed in the smartphone market, they are resorting to legal measures to extort profit from others? achievements and hinder the pace of innovation. We remain focused on building new technology and supporting Android partners.?

Norwegian Institute of Public Health

What type of childcare arrangements do parents choose before their children are 18 months old? Does the choice of childcare affect children's language skills and mental health at the age of five?

These are some of the questions that are explored in a new report prepared by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health as part of a collaborative project with the Ministry of Education and Research. The report indicates that there is no evidence that early centre-based childcare is harmful for most children.

Most pre-school children in Norway attend different types of childcare arrangements on a daily or weekly basis, and by far the majority are in centre-based childcare (kindergarten). In contrast to most other countries, children with physical and/or mental disabilities are not separated from the other children, but attend regular groups or classes in public kindergartens and schools.

Childcare is an important arena for language development and learning and for preventing and coping with mental health issues, regardless of the child's functional level. Because most children in Norway participate in childcare we have opportunities to learn about what the best arrangements are for learning, as well as how best to cope with daily challenges for children with different levels of functioning. The significance of different types of childcare for children's development is frequently discussed in many research groups as well as in the preschool education sector.

The aim of this report "Barnepass fram til 18 mneder. Sammenhenger mellom barnepass fram til 18 mneder og sprklige ferdigheter og psykisk fungering ved fem r" (English: Childcare up to 18 months. Relations between child care up to 18 months and language skills and mental function at five years) has been to provide more knowledge about the use of different childcare arrangements and how they affect children's functioning as well as the impact of starting in childcare at an early age.

The report provides an overview of the current status and is based on data from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. The first part of the report presents information about childcare arrangements based on questionnaire data from more than 60 000 children in MoBa aged 18 months, in the period between 2001 and the end of 2009. Then impact of childcare (up to 18 months of age) was studied in the context of language skills, language-related difficulties and psychological function in 13 000 children who had reached five years by the end of 2010.

What works for whom?

Overall, the report shows that neither the language skills nor the psychological function of most children varies with the type of childcare, their age when starting in childcare outside the home, whether they used a combination of childcare arrangements or just one type, or how many hours per week they were in childcare.

"For most children there is no evidence from our findings to suggest that it is harmful to begin in centre-based childcare at 12 months," said Synnve Schjlberg, researcher and specialist in clinical psychology. "The small effect sizes of the findings indicate that the differences between children attending childcare at an early age and those starting later have no clinical implications for most children" she explains.

"Neither do the findings suggest that most children who are cared for at home up to 18 months of age are better prepared than children cared for by others in the same period," said Schjlberg.

"It is possible that the small differences found could be attributed to some children's particular vulnerability. Low quality childcare could be hypothesised as another explanation," said Schjlberg. "We will investigate these relationships further. The debate around centre-based childcare needs to be more nuanced and now rather focus on what works for whom" she added.

Main findings

The report is only available in Norwegian but here is a summary of the main findings:

  1. The majority of children cared for outside the home before they are 18 months were in centre-based childcare. A larger proportion of children were in non-maternal care outside the home in 2009 relative to previous years. Although most children are cared for at home until they are 10-12 months old, with increasing age there is an increase in the number of children who are cared for outside of their home.

Across year of data collection, and thus coverage of child-care centres, we found that 40 per cent of 18 month old children attended centre based childcare, while one in four children (26 per cent) are with a nanny/family-based care. In 2008 and 2009 we found that 59 per cent of the children attended centre-based childcare at 18 months, while 15 per cent were with a nanny/family-based care.

  2. The number of hours children are in child care outside the home at 18 months increases. In the interval between 2001 and 2009, most of the 18 month old children (63 per cent) were in childcare between 25 to 40 hours per week. The average number of hours children were cared for by others increased from 27 hours for children who were 18 months old between 2001 and 2003 to 31 hours for children who were 18 months old between 2007 and 2009.
  3. . Approximately half of five year olds attend public childcare centres. 98 per cent of the five year olds participating in MoBa attend centre-based childcare. Approximately half of the children (52 per cent) attend public childcare centres while a slightly smaller proportion (45 per cent) attends privately run childcare centres.
  4. Choice of childcare is related to the length of mothers' education. A smaller proportion of 18-month-old children were cared for at home in 2009 relative to 2003. The most substantial change across time was found among mothers without any completed higher education. In 2003, 40 per cent of mothers with low levels of education utilised non-maternal care outside home, whereas this number had increased to 63 per cent in 2009. Relative to mothers with higher education, a larger proportion of mothers with lower education levels care for their children at home until 18 months (50 per cent vs. 14 per cent). Child-minder / family-based childcare were found to be more often used by mothers who did not have higher education.
  5. Children of parents with a non-Norwegian mother tongue begin care outside the home later than children of two Norwegian speaking parents. At 18 months of age, 74 per cent of the children with two Norwegian speaking parents were cared for outside the home whereas 65 per cent of children from families where neither parent has Norwegian as their mother tongue were cared for outside the home.
  6. Girls who attend child care outside the home from 12 months are not negatively affected in language development or language related problems. The same holds true for girls being cared for in different types of child care. There are no advantages in the girls' language development to being cared for at home in the first 18 months compared to being in childcare at an earlier age.
  7. Boys who attend child care outside the home are rated as having slightly higher score on language related difficulties at five years relative to those who were cared for at home until 18 months. The effect size is small. Being cared for in childcare before 18 months only explains about one per mille () of the variation in language-related difficulties at five years. Thus, the difference between the two groups is not of clinical significance for most of the boys.
  8. Boys who began in childcare outside the home before 18 months are rated with slightly higher scores on behavioural symptoms at five years relative to those who were cared for at home until 18 months. The effect sizes are small. Childcare experience only explains about one per mille () of the variation in behavioural symptoms and is thus not likely to be of clinical significance.
  9. Children who are cared for more than 40 hours a week outside the home are rated with slightly more behavioural symptoms at five years of age. Both girls and boys who were cared for outside the home for 40 hours or more per week at 18 months were found to have slightly more behavioural problems at five years of age relative to children who were cared for less than 40 hours per week outside the home at 18 months. The effect sizes are small. The difference in childcare experience only explains about 1.2 per mille () of the variation in behavioural symptoms and thus for most of the children is not of clinical significance.
  10. There is no association between childcare history and emotional problems at five years. Independent of the age when children start with care outside the home, neither girls nor boys who were cared for by others were found to be more anxious or sad than those who are cared for at home.
  11. Many children have documented developmental difficulties or increased risk for developing such difficulties already during the first year of life. When the children reached five years of age, it is reported that five per cent had birth defects, syndromes or have had serious medical problems. It is also reported about seven per cent were at risk of developmental difficulties due to birth related factors(1). In addition, the parents of a third of all five year olds reported either having been concerned about the child's development at some point or that the child had been diagnosed with a developmental disability by a healthcare professional.

It is important to stress that all significant differences that were identified were very small. This implies that the reported effects of childcare history are not likely to be of any clinical importance. The small differences between the groups could potentially be due to a small number of children being particularly sensitive to the time at which they start care outside the home or for the amount of time they spend away from home. Qualitative differences across the types of childcare institutions may also potentially influence these outcomes. However, these mechanisms will be explored further in future publications.

Leisha Hailey Kicked Off Southwest Flight for Kissing Girlfriend

Leisha Hailey Kicked Off Southwest Flight for Kissing Girlfriend

Lesbian actress and musician Leisha Hailey is accusing Southwest Airlines of "homophobic" behavior. The L Word star says the she was booted off a flight because she was kissing her girlfriend, Camila Grey.

"I have been discriminated against by @SouthwestAir. Flt. attendant said that it was a "family" airline and kissing was not ok," the actress shared on Twitter Monday afternoon.

According to her Twitter stream, the 40-year-old actress was in El Paso, Tex., visiting the family of her girlfriend, 32-year-old Grey (who is not only her romantic partner, but her fellow band member in the indie group Uh Huh Her).

"We were escorted off the plane for getting upset about the issue. @SouthwestAir endorses homophobic employees. No one made her accountable," Hailey twittered.

For their part, Southwest claims the couple was asked to tone down their PDA after other passengers complained.

"Initial reports indicate that we received several passenger complaints characterizing the behavior as excessive. Our crew, responsible for the comfort of all Customers on board, approached the passengers based solely on behavior and not gender," the airline said in a statement.

Regardless, Hailey is calling for a boycott: "Did I mention to @SouthwestAir that I have a lot of their actions recorded on audio and video? RT #boycottSouthwest #discrimination," she wrote her fans.

Of course, this isn't the first time the airline has found themselves in a celebrity controversy. Last year, director Kevin Smith was allegedly kicked off a Southwest flight for being overweight. So, is all publicity really good publicity?

Eurogamer 2011: Kid Icarus Preview : Videogame News & Reviews ...

Posted by Martin Watts on Monday, September 26, 2011 ? Leave a Comment?

Will This Game Make You Bark Like A?Dog?

Okay, so I won?t lie. Eurogamer was a dream come true for me. As a (fairly) early adopter of the 3DS, I?ve been quite dis?ap?pointed by the dearth of qual?ity soft?ware. While The Leg?end of Zelda: Oca?rina of Time 3D and Star?fox 64 3D are great remakes, they?re far from any?thing fresh and inno?v?a?tive for the system.

So I guess we should all be thank?ful that Masahiro Saku?rai is here to save the day with Kid Icarus Upris?ing. Or should we? Pit, the boy won?der of Angel Land is star?ring once again in his own game after what seems like an eter?nity, but has too much changed since the orig?i?nal (per?haps Saku?rai has added trip?ping?).? The game mechan?ics have come a long way since Pit last appeared in Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Mon?sters back in 1991 (Yes, we do realise that he is a playable char?ac?ter in Super Smash Bros. Brawl), and Kid Icarus Upris?ing is now an action shooter very much in the same vein as Sin & Pun?ish?ment.? If an enemy gets too close, you?ll auto?mat?i?cally switch to melee weapons, which are heavy-hitting to say the least.? Some of the game is on-rails, but there are areas where you are expected to move Pit from A to?B.

Firstly, the game looks fan?tas?tic.? It?s the most stun?ning game on 3DS by a long shot.? The fly?ing scenes are par?tic?u?larly strik?ing, mainly because there?s an incred?i?ble sense of speed as you zip over and under all sorts of obsta?cles.? In one part of the game, you fly above numer?ous ground armies, and the sense of scale you expe?ri?ence is like noth?ing seen on 3DS before.

Of course, when some?thing seems too good to be true, it usu?ally is.? And the prob?lem here is that while Kid Icarus Upris?ing looks great, it doesn?t fare too well in the con?trols depart?ment.? It uses a sim?i?lar setup to Metroid Prime: Hunters, whereby you use the joy?stick to move and the sty?lus to aim. While it does allow for pin?point pre?ci?sion, I just found this mode too clunky.? The 3DS isn?t the light?est hand?held (and admit?tedly, it being attached to the stand didn?t help) so pre?pare for hand cramp galore.? It is pos?si?ble to play with?out the sty?lus, but this mode is even more cum?ber?some, as you?re forced to hold R to aim, which then pre?vents you from mov?ing as freely.? It?s not hard to see why Nin?tendo is now releas?ing that addi?tional joy?stick add-on.

Still, it?s early days and we could see some refine?ment take place over the next few months.? Need?less to say, Kid Icarus Upris?ing was, oth?er?wise, an enjoy?able game?play expe?ri?ence.? The action is fast-paced and fun (not to men?tion pretty tough at times) and the over?all pre?sen?ta?tion is superb.? The game is fully voiced and although there?s some cheese?balls in terms of dia?logue, it?s pretty funny at?times.

The eas?i?est way to sum up Kid Icarus Upris?ing is to think of it as a smor?gas?bord of Nin?tendo fran?chises. The on-rails action and voice act?ing is very much like Star?fox 64, the shoot?ing mechan?ics and melee attacks echo those of Sin & Pun?ish?ment, and the (awk?ward) con?trols are sim?i?lar to Metroid Prime Hunters.

It?ll be inter?est?ing to see how the final prod?uct turns out when Kid Icarus Upris?ing releases some?time early next year.? Stay tuned to Bits ?n? Bytes Gam?ing for more infor?ma?tion as it?comes!

Torres hopes to keep form for Chelsea at Valencia

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:48 a.m. ET Sept. 27, 2011

VALENCIA, Spain (AP) -Chelsea striker Fernando Torres will look to keep his scoring touch going when his team visits Valencia on Wednesday in the Champions League.

After scoring only once since transferring from Liverpool last season, Torres has found the back of the net in two straight Premier League matches.

The Spain striker also set up David Luiz and Juanma Mata in Chelsea's 2-0 Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen.

"They are a great team and we know that they are ready for us," Torres said about Valencia. "It's going to be very, very tough."

The crowd at Mestalla Stadium, however, will likely be focused on Mata, who will be making a return to his former club after leaving at the end of the transfer window.

Mata said that if he scores, he won't celebrate the goal "out of respect for a club and supporters that always treated me well during the four seasons I was there."

His former teammates are also eager for the reunion.

"I talk to him a lot and am very excited to play against him," Valencia forward Pablo Hernandez said. "But on the pitch there are no friends, so we will try to beat Juanma and his team, and then after the game wish him well."

In the other Group E match, Leverkusen hosts Genk.

Valencia enters the game coming off a 1-0 loss to nine-man Sevilla, its first defeat in 10 games. It drew 0-0 at Genk in their Champions League opener and is looking to avenge two straight losses in Chelsea's last visits to Mestalla stadium.

"It is clear that after the draw at Genk we need points," Hernandez said.

The two-time finalist will be spearheaded by striker Roberto Soldado, who has taken Mata's place as fan favorite with five goals to start this season and 17 goals in his last 15 appearances.

Soldado should be well rested after sitting out most of Saturday's loss in Seville.

After years of being a top title contender both in England and the continent, Chelsea is in a period of transition in Andre Villas-Boas' first season and sits three points behind front-runners Manchester United and Manchester City in the Premier league.

While the two Manchester sides are putting on dazzling attacking displays, Chelsea has scored a mundane 12 goals in the English league compared to the 21 they had after six games last season.

But veteran goalkeeper Petr Cech said staying atop the group with a second win would help Chelsea in all competitions.

"Everybody is counting Valencia as one of the main rivals so this will be a difficult one," Cech said. "If you are chasing every trophy it is always good to have as many points as possible as soon as possible in the Champions League, gain qualification and then you can concentrate until the new year on the Premier League and the Carling Cup."

In Germany, Leverkusen will look to rebound from its loss to Chelsea against a Genk side it had no trouble beating 4-1 in a friendly this summer.

Swiss forward Eren Derdiyok scored a hat trick for the Bundesliga runner-up in that game against Genk.

The Belgian champions enter the game coming off a 1-1 draw away at Oud-Heverlee Leuven.

Different Fruits And Vegetables Affect Cancer Risk In Different Parts ...

Eating more apples is linked to lower risk of distal colon cancer, brassicas like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprouts are linked to lower risk of cancer in both the proximal and the distal colon, while on the other hand, drinking more fruit juice appears to raise the risk of rectal cancer, according to new research from Australia published in the October issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

The large bowel comprises the rectum (the part that terminates in the anus), the distal colon (next to the rectum, includes the descending colon, sigmoid colon, and large intestine), and the proximal colon (on the other side of the distal colon to the rectum, includes the cecum, appendix, ascending colon, hepatic flexure, transverse colon and splenic flexure).

Previous studies on colorectal cancer have often failed to differentiate among sites of tumor origin in the large bowel, even though we now know that colorectal cancer (CRC) risk varies by site in the bowel, and that tumors in the proximal colon develop in a different way to tumors in the distal colon and rectum.

The reason for doing this study is because we know little about how different foods may affect different sites of the large bowel.

Lead author Professor Lin Fritschi, head of the Epidemiology Group at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, Perth, Western Australia, told the press:

?Fruits and vegetables have been examined extensively in nutritional research in relation to CRC, however, their protective effect has been subject to debate, possibly because of different effects on different subsites of the large bowel.?

She suggested perhaps some of the confusion about the links between diet and CRC risk is because previous research did not take into account the site of the CRC.

Fritschi and colleagues from the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, University of Western Australia and Deakin University, looked at links between fruit and vegetables and cancers and three parts of the large bowel: the proximal colon, the distal colon and the rectum.

They recruited 918 participants with CRC and 1,021 control participants with no history of the disease to take part in a case-control study. All participants filled in detailed questionnaires about their medical status and their diet and demographic information to help the researchers account for potential confounders such as socioeconomic status.

When the researchers analysed the results they found that:

A reduced rate of proximal colon cancer was linked to eating brassicas like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts.

Both total vegetable intake and total vegetable and fruit intake were linked to a lower risk of distal colon cancer.

A significant reduction in distal colon cancer risk was linked to dark yellow vegetables and apples.

But, fruit juice, on the other hand, appeared to raise the risk for rectal cancer.

Neither total fruit and vegetable nor total fruit nor total vegetable showed any links with risk of proximal colon cancer and rectal cancer.

?? from a public health point of view it is easier to translate food-based analyses into dietary recommendations, rather than using the intake of single nutrients,? conclude the authors.

Fritschi said we now need to confirm these results:

?The replication of these findings in large prospective studies may help determine whether a higher intake of vegetables is a means for reducing the risk of distal CRC.?

According to Cancer Council Australia, excluding non-melanoma skin cancer, colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women in Australia, where there are more than 14,000 new cases every year and 4,047 people died from the disease in 2007.

Looking for growth in Maine's agricultural economy ? Maine ...

Maine?s agricultural sector has played a prominent role in the state?s economy, culture and environment for more than a century. Of Maine?s approximately 20 million acres, about 1.35 million are devoted to some aspect of farming. Figures from the 2007 United States Department of Agriculture Census indicate Maine?s 8,100 farms produce a wide variety of crops ? about 80 ? on farms that range in size from less than an acre to several thousand acres.

The state?s contribution to U.S. agriculture is notable. Maine ranks eighth in the nation for potatoes, according to a 2003 study by Planning Decisions Inc., and 12th for fruit exports, according to the USDA. Economically Maine?s farms produce about $617.2 million in agricultural yield, placing it second to Vermont in New England and accounting for about 25 percent of New England?s total production, according to USDA data.

But farmers today face a changing landscape. Culturally, the buy-and-eat local food movement is growing, as individuals are paying increasing attention to how and where their food is grown. Meanwhile, health concerns are increasing, with record numbers of U.S. residents classified as obese and facing health risks from heart disease and diabetes.

The percentage that food purchases take from household budgets has increased due to stagnant income levels, higher fuel prices and resulting higher food prices. Environmentally, freshwater access across the globe is diminishing as human populations and corresponding irrigation systems rise. Finally, increasing volatility in weather patterns has increased farming?s unpredictability.

Fortunately, Maine?s agriculture can be competitively positioned to capitalize on opportunities emerging from these shifts. Unlike other areas in the country, it has abundant access to freshwater. USDA figures from 2010 show that relative to other states in New England, Maine has a large undeveloped land base with farm real estate that is the least expensive in New England and the mid-Atlantic.

Maine also has an established diversified farming sector with a knowledge base that helps existing growers as well as new start-ups. Finally, the market potential of 60 million people within a day?s drive of the state is an exciting prospect for Maine agriculture.

These factors give the state?s growers very rich possibilities, but farming in Maine faces several serious problems. To gain insight into the state of farming in Maine and how growers view their future, a team of University of Maine faculty, funded by the University of Maine System Board of Trustees, interviewed farmers about threats, opportunities and their needs for the future. Led by John Jemison, Jane Haskell, Damon Hall and I interviewed about 180 farmers, including dairy, potato, beef, apple, blueberry and vegetable farmers. We also interviewed organic farmers, ornamental producers, several mixed groups of farmers and a group of crop consultants.

Across all farming sectors, farmers are optimistic about the positive effect of the local food movement on markets. Consumer interest in local food has boosted both direct markets such as community-supported agriculture groups (where individuals pay a fixed amount before the growing season in exchange for a portion of the farm?s produce over the season) and farmers markets. Maine has doubled its farmers markets in the last five years to about 100 today, and all indications are this growth will continue.

But to expand beyond these important but relatively small direct markets, improvements in Maine?s limited distribution system and processing facilities are required. Growers who wish to transport products from rural places throughout the state are not close to rail systems or major highways. Transportation costs are driven up by time and the use of smaller conveyance systems to move products. Facilities for large-scale animal processing often are located out of state or in the southern third of the state, driving up product costs.

Other issues farmers discussed are the substantial barriers farmers face to enter the field of agriculture. Farming requires huge capital investment in land, equipment and inputs, both at start-up and subsequently in necessary farm improvements to stay competitive. Despite the work by Maine Farmland Trust, access to affordable land is an increasingly serious problem.

Managing the large debt burden is a major concern to farmers. Both new and veteran farmers need affordable health care for themselves and their families. Farmers perform very physical work in sometimes harsh conditions. They often can afford only catastrophic health care plans and speak of the very real risks of not being able to pay for more routine health care needs.

Expanding and developing Maine?s agriculture ensures that the state extends its commitment to producing goods on working landscapes, helps ensure food security for the state?s residents and supports an industry that helps rural communities stay vibrant and self-sustaining. Our research suggests that we can take actions to enhance agriculture in Maine.

Public policy and public-private partnerships supporting improvements in transportation and processing infrastructure, as well as incentive mechanisms to preserve farmland, would help anchor and grow farming. Affordable health care also would promote long-term viability. A food-secure future is dependent on a strong Maine agriculture. This includes greater support for our local farmers today, the state making infrastructure investments to create market opportunities and Maine institutions purchasing greater amounts of Maine-grown food.

Perhaps most importantly, we need to invest in the next generation of farmers and underwrite educating them in the science, business, communication and marketing skills necessary for farming success.

The Changing Landscape of Hotel Search Engine Marketing

by Anil Aggarwal, CEO,?Milestone Internet Marketing

Search is continuing to evolve.? After the Panda update, the algorithm that previously worked well for SEO ? relevant content, right meta-tags, and relevant in-bound links are not enough for high rankings on search engines.? While these factors continue to be extremely important, there are several other new ones, too, that have also come into play.

Before we delve deeper into what impacts search rankings, here?s a view of what has changed in online channels in the last 10 years.

Google now vs Google then

Saturation of search buckets

In 2001, the main online channels consisted of Paid Search and Organic Search.? Fast-forward to 2011, the main online channels include:? Paid and Organic Search of course, Local Search, Images, Videos, Maps, News, and Social Media.? Google?s intent is to present the best result to the consumer that is relevant to their query.

2011 Ranking factors just released by Danny Sullivan, include several key on-page and off-page factors such as freshness of content, site architecture, social relevancy, authoritative links etc. This is where social relevancy comes into play in a big way.? Google?s initiative on Google +1 is exactly targeted in that direction.? Now Google is integrating your friends? (social circle) likes and recommendations with the search engine algorithmic results.? Google is also placing significant emphasis on the reviews that the business has.? Another important thing that is factoring in Google?s search results is the consumer?s personal preferences.? What may be the best results for one person could be entirely different from that of another person based on personal preferences, friends in the social circle, and the location.? As you will see below, the search results for a simple query ? San Francisco Hotels, are different when the user is logged into their gmail account or if the user changes the location where the user is based.
Personalized search results
So, what does all this mean for the hoteliers?? Here are some simple conclusions that the hotels can draw from the recent changes.

  1. The factors that impact search results have changed drastically.? Whereas previously, content, meta-tags, were enough, now hoteliers need to focus on several ranking factors:
    • Search optimized, relevant, and localized content
    • Age of URL / relevance of business in online world
    • Architecture and download time of your website
    • Relevant and trusted in-bound links
    • Search categories saturation ? local, paid, videos, images, news, blogs, etc.
    • Social circle and online reviews
    • Fresh and engaging real-time content
  2. Content continues to be the most important ranking factor.? It is important for hotels to have good quality, original content on the website.? Syndicated content, while useful for conversion, will not have much impact on search engine rankings.
  3. Hoteliers need to change their focus from ranks in search results to things that are more meaningful ? traffic, conversions, time spent on website, bounce rate, revenue.? The rankings for keywords will vary depending on the user preferences, user?s social circle, and user?s location and cannot be used to judge the success of a SEO campaign.
  4. Social relevancy will continue to strongly influence search rankings.? Likes and dislikes of people in your social circle will impact the search results.
  5. The reviews for the businesses will have a significant impact on the rankings.? While hotels should continue to encourage reviews on channels such as TripAdvisor, it is important also to add Google Places reviews channel to the list of sites that hotels are focusing on.? Google Places reviews will impact the placement of the business in search results, especially on local search channels.? Google Hotel Finder helps sort any hotel based on people reviews, rating etc.
  6. While Search Engine Optimization (SEO) continues to be a significant strategy with high return, a successful online marketing strategy needs to have other key marketing components such as SEM (paid search), social media optimization, online reputation management, and ways to generate authoritative trusted links.

In summary, search engine marketing is changing rapidly as social media continues to grow in significance.? Hotels should evolve their marketing strategies to keep up with the changing landscape.? Cross-marketing across different search channels and social media channels will result in highest return on investment.

Tony Bennett blames Americans for 9/11

While promoting his latest album, "Duets II," Tony Bennett appeared on Howard Stern?s Sirius XM radio show on Monday, Sept. 19. While the interview has landed Bennett?s name in the headlines, it may have also earned him some controversial publicity.

According to ABC News, the World War II vet (who described himself as ?anti-war?) expressed disdain for the U.S.-Iraq war, calling it ?a tremendous, tremendous mistake.? When challenged as to how America should deal with terrorists, specifically those involved with the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks, Bennett gave an unexpected answer.

?But who are the terrorists? Are we the terrorists or are they the terrorists? Two wrongs don?t make a right,? he said.

?They flew the plane in, but we caused it,? he continued. ?Because we were bombing them and they told us to stop.? After a few moments of contemplative silence, Stern agreed that his guest had made ?some good points.?

Thousands march against nuclear power in Tokyo (AP)

TOKYO ? Chanting "Sayonara nuclear power" and waving banners, tens of thousands of people marched in central Tokyo on Monday to call on Japan's government to abandon atomic energy in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident.

The demonstration underscores how deeply a Japanese public long accustomed to nuclear power has been affected by the March 11 crisis, when a tsunami caused core meltdowns at three reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex.

The disaster ? the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl ? saw radiation spewed across a wide part of northeastern Japan, forcing the evacuation of some 100,000 people who lived near the plant and raising fears of contamination in everything from fruit and vegetables to fish and water.

"Radiation is scary," said Nami Noji, a 43-year-old mother who came to the protest on this national holiday with her four children, ages 8-14. "There's a lot of uncertainty about the safety of food, and I want the future to be safe for my kids."

Police estimated the crowd at 20,000 people, while organizers said there were three times that many people.

In addition to fears of radiation, the Japanese public and corporate world have had to put up with electricity shortages amid the sweltering summer heat after more than 30 of Japan's 54 nuclear reactors were idled over the summer to undergo inspections.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, who took office earlier this month, has said Japan will restart reactors that clear safety checks. But he has also said the country should reduce its reliance on atomic energy over the long-term and explore alternative sources of energy. He has not spelled out any specific goals.

Before the disaster, this earthquake-prone country derived 30 percent of its electricity from nuclear power. Yet Japan is also a resource-poor nation, making it a difficult, time-consuming process for it to come up with viable alternative forms of energy.

Mari Joh, a 64-year-old woman who traveled from Hitachi city to collect signatures for a petition to shut down the Tokai Dai-ni nuclear plant not far from her home, acknowledged that shifting the country's energy sources could take 20 years.

"But if the government doesn't act decisively now to set a new course, we'll just continue with the status quo," she said Monday. "I want to use natural energy, like solar, wind and biomass."

Before the march, the protesters gathered in Meiji Park to hear speakers address the crowd, including one woman from Fukushima prefecture, Reiko Muto, who described herself as a "hibakusha," an emotionally laden term for survivors of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Those evacuated from around the plant remain uncertain about when, if ever, they will be able to return to their homes.

An AP-GfK poll showed that 55 percent of Japanese want to reduce the number of nuclear reactors in the country, while 35 percent would like to leave the number about the same. Four percent want an increase while 3 percent want to eliminate them entirely.

The poll, which surveyed 1,000 adults between July 29 and Aug. 10, had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

Author Kenzaburo Oe, who won the Nobel literature prize in 1994 and has campaigned for pacifist and anti-nuclear causes, also addressed the crowd. He and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, who composed the score to the movie "The Last Emperor," were among the event's supporters.

(This version CORRECTS spelling of nuclear plant's name in second paragraph.)
