How Your Business Can Get the Most From SXSW

What are you doing at SXSW Interactive to help your business? ??

Most of the impact you can get from SXSW comes from rigorous preparation. For instance, pre-release your product, set up meetings, and plan effective gatherings with clients and prospects.

Even at this late stage, plan event and post-event strategies to maximize SXSW momentum.??

First, it?s important to recognize that SXSW is a festival, which is different than a tradeshow, summit or conference. More than 20,000 attendees gather in Austin, TX where they?ll encounter a head-spinning velocity of parties, panels, tweets, pitches and food. As such, you may feel that surviving hangovers and food trucks sums up a successful SXSW experience. On the other hand, if you?re attending for business, you can do better.

??Because it?s unlikely you?ll have the visibility of Twitter or Foursquare when they launched at SXSW, target specific people you want to meet ? prospects, clients, partners and recruits. Focus on ways to connect with and meaningfully impact these people. ??

With those goals in mind, here are a few tips to make your trip to Austin count.

1. Be SXSW Socially Active

??Announce to prospects, customers and partners (multiple times) that you plan to attend SXSW. If you typically share this type of news on one social network, expand your distribution this week. Share tips, observations, funny SXSW pictures or stories on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram and Pinterest. ??

2. Create a Command Center at the Office

??Maybe you and a colleague are going to SXSW, leaving the rest of the team behind. It?s difficult to stay on top of calls and communication at SXSW, when you?re always on the go.

Therefore, implement a central command back at the office to help research and coordinate your activities. Ask colleagues to keep an eye on social networks for relevant prospects and networking opportunities; then ask them to reach out and coordinate introductory meetings for you. Designate a couple of go-to meeting spots, such as lobbies of nearby hotels or a major sponsor booth on the first floor of the convention hall.

3. Party for Business

Attend the parties where you?ll have the best chances of actually talking to the people that matter, or where you know the hosts, who can introduce you to attendees. Find partners hosting parties that have similar clients. Consider smaller parties and venues that may not be as loud, allowing you to network more effectively. When you get to a party, don?t spend all your time with your colleagues! Divide up to have more meaningful conversations.??

4. Leverage Partners and Austin Friends

??Leverage partners who have something cool going on at SXSW, as well as your connections in Austin. Hang with partners and friends that are more connected than you ? introductions will come.

If you know a startup with offices close to the convention center, perhaps you could meet clients there (a quiet place). Or maybe a partner who has similar client base will allow you to invite joint client to its suite?

My company rented a suite complete with food, drinks, WiFi, massage chair, SXSW ?survival kits? and a big table for meetings. I spent less time running around from meeting to meeting and more time in the suite, where clients gladly flocked to our ?oasis.?

5. Invite Your VIPs Along

Do you have invites to private parties or VIP gatherings? Do these events allow you to bring a +1? Offer the invite to key people with whom you want to meet. Grabbing lunch by yourself or with colleagues? Use the opportunity to ask a client to join. If you?re getting a pedicab, can you offer a prospect a ride?

6. Make Your Meetings Memorable

??Everybody is doing something to stand out, which means no one is standing out. The client you plan to meet with is also meeting with 50 other people. Therefore, it?s vital that your interactions with prospects, clients and consumers are relevant. ???

First, get your elevator pitch down and make it compelling. Highlight things your future clients need to share with others back at the office, for instance, what competitors are doing. Keep the conversation light and fun (matching the atmosphere). Make it personal by telling stories or taking a picture with them at a landmark.

If you give products away, make sure they?re useful or cool, like a mini survival kit, something they?ll access throughout the show and after. And give them something to write down, like a URL to a demo site or a download.??

7. Make Your Product SXSW Relevant

??Think about what people would need and want during or after SXSW. Can your technology or service help them? Last year, GroupMe and Hurricane Party launched to help people stay in touch with colleagues and find where friends were gathering for SXSW.

At this late stage, could you provide useful pro-bono service to a partner? Showcase your product in a way that?s relevant to SXSW.

8. Meet, Greet and Share Your Objectives

??SXSW has the networking ?vibe? that encourages meeting interesting people. If you don?t have something going on, actively introduce yourself to others. Prepare a few sentences to explain your business, your objectives and the type of people you want to meet. You never know who you?ll run into who can later become the perfect connection. ??

9. Challenge the Team

When attending events with salespeople or colleagues, propose challenges. At SXSW, come up with fun ways to encourage meaningful networking. For instance, award a prize to the person who can earn the most business cards.??

10. Fast Follow Up

During the event, share relevant conversations back with the team. Then immediately follow up with contacts to send information, share pictures, make introductions, schedule meetings or set up demos. The more effectively you follow up with press, prospects and partners, the better chances you have for gaining traction. ??

New immune-system sensor may speed up, slash cost of detecting disease

ScienceDaily (Mar. 7, 2012) ? An inexpensive new medical sensor has the potential to simplify the diagnosis of diseases ranging from life-threatening immune deficiencies to the common cold, according to its inventors at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Their device, called an integrated microfluidics-waveguide sensor, sorts and counts cells in small samples of blood and other body fluids. The developers say the sensor provides an easy way to measure different types of white blood cells, a key component of the immune system. They add that the sensor, which is about the size of an adult's thumbnail, could be deployed in doctors' offices, newborn nurseries, patients' homes, disaster sites and battlefields.

"A low-cost way of counting cells could provide point-of-care diagnosis and monitoring for immune disorders, allergies, infections, AIDS, cancer and other disorders," said Manish Butte, MD, PhD, who led the team of inventors. Butte is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Stanford, a pediatric immunologist at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and the senior author of a paper describing the sensor that appeared online March 7 in Biomicrofluidics. Stanford University has filed for a patent on the device; the inventors are seeking a partner to commercialize the sensors.

Butte developed the sensor because he wanted a better way to screen newborns for severe combined immunodeficiency, a congenital illness commonly known as "bubble boy disease" in which infants are born with much of their immune system missing. The disease affects about one in 100,000 infants. California's current method for screening newborns for this disease takes three to six weeks to return results, by which time some affected infants could contract life-threatening infections. In contrast, the new sensor has the potential to detect low T-cell counts, a hallmark of the disease, in a 15-minute test in the newborn nursery before a new baby goes home from the hospital.

Butte soon realized, however, that the sensor had the potential to aid in diagnosing a wide range of conditions.

The body has many types of white blood cells, each with different disease-fighting roles. White blood cell counts already help doctors diagnose some diseases and monitor treatment of others, including cancer and AIDS, but current cell-counting methods require fairly large blood samples and costly, slow equipment that can be operated only by trained laboratory technicians.

One possible application of the new sensor would allow doctors to solve a common, vexing problem: determining the cause of a runny nose. Instead of using the current trial-and-error method for diagnosing the problem, doctors could take a mucus sample from the patient in their office and measure the white blood cells present. Elevation of one type of white blood cells could implicate allergies, another cell type could point to a sinus infection and a third type of elevated cell count could suggest that the runny nose was simply due to the common cold.

The new sensor consists of a small, rectangular piece of glass impregnated with a strip of potassium ions. The potassium-impregnated glass acts as a "waveguide" -- laser light shone into the strip of glass is transmitted down it in a specific way, and the light emitted from the far end of the waveguide can be measured with a light sensor.

To operate the detector, a patient's fluid sample is mixed with antibodies specific for the particular type of white blood cell to be measured. Each antibody is attached to a tiny bead of magnetic iron. Then, the sample is injected in a small channel on top of the glass waveguide. A magnet under the glass traps the labeled cells in the channel. The iron beads block a bit of the laser light that would otherwise pass through the waveguide, and this reduced transmission is measured by the light sensor at the far side of the glass.

The prototype sensor cost about $60 to build using off-the-shelf electronics components, Butte said, adding that the per-unit cost would be lower if the sensors were manufactured in bulk. In comparison, laboratory machines now used to count cells cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Butte noted that the sensors could be used by patients as well as by health-care providers.

"Catching infections early is important for many patient populations," Butte said, adding that he hopes such patients -- including those who have received organ transplants, suffer chronic kidney failure or are taking immune-suppressing drugs to treat rheumatoid arthritis -- could use the sensors to monitor their immune systems much in the way that diabetics use glucometers to track their blood sugar at home.

Butte's Stanford collaborators on the project are postdoctoral scholar Daniel Garcia, PhD, and Isaac Ghansah, a biology undergraduate student.

The research was funded by grants from the SPARK translational research program at the School of Medicine, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology and the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Council.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It's the busiest day of the Republican race for president, but this Super Tuesday probably won't settle much.

One-third of the delegates needed to win will be doled out in voting across 10 states ? slimmed down to half its 2008 size. But because delegates are handed out by share, it's not likely to end the GOP race.

Sure, Super Tuesday could nudge Newt Gingrich out of the race, or lend Ron Paul more credibility. But it won't be easy for either Mitt Romney or Rick Santorum to score a decisive advantage. A close second in a state can pay off almost as well as first place.

Win some big states, especially Ohio, and the symbolism is powerful, of course.

Romney might cement the front-runner status that keeps slipping through his fingers. Santorum could prove he's the real thing.

What's at stake, what's it mean and what might happen when states stretching from Alaska to Virginia vote on the same day? A Super Tuesday tip sheet:

Delegates for grabs Tuesday: 419.

Delegates already won: 353. Romney, 203; Santorum, 92; Gingrich, 33; Paul, 25.

Delegates needed for the nomination: 1,144.

Super Tuesday is super expensive:

This one day of voting can eat up millions of dollars in TV advertising. When it comes to commercials, Romney and his campaign's supporters have outgunned the rest of the field.

Restore Our Future, a political action committee that backs Romney, had spent about $5.5 million in Super Tuesday states by the end of last week, according to data The Associated Press obtained from media buyers.

It's all about Ohio:

It's the race to watch. Political junkies get all misty-eyed over this Rust Belt swing state, and not just because of its 63 delegates.

No Republican nominee has ever become president without winning Ohio in the general election. That makes it a powerful proving ground for the men trying to show they can take on President Barack Obama.

It's home to Joe the Plumber and tens of thousands of auto workers, but Ohio's not all blue-collar. It's also home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, high-tech science, medical and energy workers, suburbanites, soybean farmers and a quarter-million dairy cows (OK, the cows can't vote). The big issue is the economy, including Obama's bailout of the auto industry.

Santorum and Romney are duking it out in the state. Look for the outcome to generate more buzz than any other Super Tuesday contest.

Newt's last stand or Gingrich rises again?

Get out the hook for Newt Gingrich if he loses in Georgia, the state he represented in the U.S. House for two decades.

Gingrich hopes to win decisively here and pick up enough other delegates to relaunch his up-and-down campaign, which has been mostly down-and-out since he lost Florida in January. He's got endorsements from Gov. Nathan Deal and Herman Cain, a fellow Georgian. He's got a new pitch, claiming he can bring down the cost of gas to $2.50 per gallon.

Santorum is pushing hard to wrest the state's Christian conservative and tea party voters away from Gingrich. Romney remains a force, even if the state is outside his comfort zone. Georgia boasts the day's biggest cache of delegates: 76.

Elsewhere in the South:

Two other Bible Belt states, Tennessee and Oklahoma, are central to Gingrich's hopes of revival. But Santorum insists he'll be the big story in both.

In Tennessee, a confident-sounding Santorum is trying to walk the footsteps of another outspoken Christian conservative, Mike Huckabee, who won this primary four years ago. Romney boasts the support of popular Gov. Bill Haslam, while Gingrich is getting plugs from one of the state's most colorful political figures: former senator, movie actor and "Law & Order" star Fred Thompson. At stake are 55 delegates.

Dotted with drilling rigs and cattle ranches, Oklahoma straddles the South and the Great Plains and sits squarely among the reddest of the red states. Santorum tagged it "ground zero of the conservative movement," and his anti-abortion, pro-family values message attracts enthusiastic crowds here. The other three hopefuls also have dropped in, hoping to prove their conservative bona fides to the Okies. It offers 40 delegates.

Paul's big night?

The anti-war, libertarian-leaning, unorthodox Republican hasn't won a single state. Super Tuesday could change that.

Paul is focusing on the three caucus states ? Idaho, North Dakota and Alaska ? where a big turnout by his cadre of enthusiastic followers would have the most impact. Even if he doesn't score a win, he's likely to pick up delegates to help power him into this summer's Republican convention with enough clout to promote his ideas.

But his rivals won't make it easy.

Idaho's big Mormon population ? about a fourth of its voters ? bodes well for Romney, who is Mormon. Santorum's looking to win in North Dakota, and Romney's trying, too.

Paul, a Texas congressman, may be the only one to journey to Alaska, however; he was there on Sunday. Meanwhile, Alaska's most famous Republican, Sarah Palin, has been saying some nice things about Gingrich.

Together, the three caucuses pay out 84 delegates (Idaho 32, North Dakota 28, Alaska 24).

What's the deal with Virginia?

Gingrich would love to compete in this Southern state, but he's not. Only Romney and Paul landed spots on the ballot, by having early organizations strong enough to collect the required 10,000 signatures. That leaves Virginia mostly a curiosity. What kind of showing can Paul muster going mano-a-mano with Romney? The fight is over 46 delegates.

Romney territory:

There's little drama in the Northeastern races. Romney's virtually unopposed in his power base of Massachusetts, where he was governor just over five years ago. Delegates: 38. He's expected to win neighboring Vermont handily, too, although Santorum seeks to peel away some of its 17 delegates.

A footnote:

Wyoming is almost a Super Tuesday state. Some of its counties start picking delegates Tuesday. But others won't caucus until Saturday, so no official statewide results before then. Romney won a nonbinding straw poll in Wyoming last month with Santorum close at his heels. At stake: 12 delegates.

Next up:

Caucuses and primaries in Kansas, Alabama, Hawaii, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois and Louisiana fill out the busiest month of the nomination season. Three territories ? American Samoa, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico ? also get their say in March.

While we can all agree that you will never get rich as an employee (well, maybe with the exception of an employee in a company that gives you stock/shares), we can also agree that we need to have income coming in as much as possible. We know that if time freedom is high on your list, you will never get that as an employee. Unless you are the owner of the company. But still, you need income coming in, even if it means getting it from a day job.

There is nothing wrong with having a day job.

Most of us know that there are negatives and positives when it comes to having a day job. The negatives are that you will have to commute, trade your time for dollars, endure psychological and physiological stress, office politics, after-tax income and so on. However, there are positives as to why you should keep your day job (within reason) especially if you?re still running a home-based business.

The truth is, we all have to bring in money. It doesn?t matter whether you are an employee, a business owner, network marketer, songwriter, real estate broker, doctor ? whatever. There is a saying that money isn?t everything in this world, but it sure does come close to oxygen. Let?s face it. Money isn?t everything, but it is important.

Anyone who says ?I don?t need the money? or ?I don?t do it for the money? is actually lying to themselves and to others. If they do not need the money, then why are they still working at their jobs? Having a home-based business and thinking that you will grow rich if you do it full time, does not give you the excuse to leave your day job when you have a massive amount of bills to pay. Even Bill Gates and Sylvester Stallone had to bring in some sort of income while they were obsessed with making their dreams come true.

For those of us who are not familiar with Maslow?s Hierarchy, Maslow states that we must always satisfy our basic needs. Food, Shelter, Water, Clothing, etc. If you are not currently getting that from your home-based business, you need to bring in income. Even if it means bringing it from a job.

There is nothing wrong with a job (unless the job is killing you and dangerously leading your stressful life to a cancerous result). Although you have to trade time for dollars, you are getting dollars and that?s a fact. You need to focus on your survival needs first and then build towards your thriving life.

Anyone who puts down jobs either had money handed down to them, or they had forgotten where they came from. These are the people who do not respect life in general and it won?t be long before their table of success turns on them. Instead of putting down jobs, or people with jobs, they should inspire people and encourage people to go for their dreams. Not FORCE them.

You can tell them what your home-based business title is. If they get to know you more personally, you can mention that you have a full time job, but you?re working hard and smart towards working in your home-based business full-time.

Remember, there is nothing wrong with a job. If it is the only source of income you have at the moment, it is the one that is going to help you provide food on the table for you and your family (if you have a family) as well as shelter, utilities and an internet connection, plus items for your home-based business (like laptops, nutritional supplements, phones, whatever.)
