Cisco Blog ? Blog Archive ? Cyber Defense. The New Battlefield.

This will be my last blog of the month in regard to our Nations Cyber Security Awareness Month. I was able to attend a webinar, ?Defending Cyber Borders -- Beyond the Virtual Maginot Line? October 25th, in which a panel discussed what CIOs, CEOs, and those who work in the virtual realm; pretty much all of us, need to focus on in regard to defending our virtual borders.

The panelists were as follows:

Rick Holland, Senior Analyst, Forrester: Rick is a Senior Analyst serving Security & Risk Professionals. Rick helps clients optimize security architectures and technologies to protect the organization from advanced threats. His research focuses on email and web content security as well as virtualization security. He also supports research in incident management and forensics. He is based in the Dallas area.

Rob Lee, Fellow, SANS Institute: Rob Lee is an entrepreneur and consultant in the Washington DC area, specializing in information security, incident response, and digital forensics. Rob is currently the curriculum lead and author for digital forensic and incident response training at the SANS Institute in addition to owning his own firm. Rob has more than 15 years of experience in computer forensics, vulnerability and exploit discovery, intrusion detection/prevention, and incident response.

Steve Martino, Vice President, Information Security, Cisco: Vice President Steve Martino leads Cisco?s Information Security (InfoSec) organization to innovate and adopt the most effective security technologies and policies, reflect them in Cisco?s people, products and services, and share them with customers. He has more than 30 years of high-technology experience in security, IT operations, product development and operations, marketing, and sales.

Shehzad Mirza, Director, MS-ISAC Security Operations Center: Shehzad Mirza is currently working as the Director of the MS-ISAC Security Operations Center (SOC). He is responsible for managing a team of analysts. Previously, he has worked as a principal consultant with Symantec Corporation managing various cyber security projects, and a technical trainer for New Horizons Computer Learning Center. Shehzad has worked in the security field for over eleven years and is MCSE, GCIH, GAWN, and CISSP certified. His main expertise is in network security infrastructure and assessment, firewall configuration, IDS/IPS configuration, PCI compliance, staffing and vulnerability assessments.

Rod Turk, Director and CISO, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office: Mr. Turk?s current position as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Chief Information Security Officer and Director, Office of Organizational Policy and Governance puts him at the forefront of the government?s effort on cyber security. Mr. Turk manages and oversees USPTO?s compliance with the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) and implementation of IT best practices.

A major theme that resounded throughout the webinar was that everybody is a fighter in this battle. We, the end user at the device, are the ones who have to stop the intrusion first by knowing not to go to this website or click on this link from an unknown email.? It was stated that many (possibly up to 97%) of these ?fishing? attempts can be thwarted at the end user level. It was also stated that the ability for those involved on the technology side of the house to integrate and create a relationship with the non-technology side is paramount. Together, lets to be able to teach proper protection at the end user level and create policy that is revisited, refined, and correctly implemented. Let?s not create an environment to where our ?incident responders?, those who will aid in the detection, mitigation, and recovery phase, are wearing two or more hats. They have to be focused on the task at hand and be able to virtually isolate or quarantine that end user device from the network.

Rod Turk made the analogy of a hard chocolate covered cherry. The outside is protected, but once a bite, even the smallest bite is taken, and that first layer gone, the rest is just gushy and soft. He was using this to describe the security that most company?s put in place as far as protection. There has to be a focus from protecting inside out. Once again, the idea of the end user protecting or detecting malware and reporting such will allow for faster response and may also allow the responder to trace the malware back to a source.

So where do we begin??A focus has to be made in order to identify what is valuable that someone else would want? Why? Who? Why would they want to interrupt my operations? What?s important to me? What would they target? Identify those needs early and start with that. Go back to the basics in regards to solid policy and implementation; not only for end users but for IT professionals, too. Have good patch management, know what you have within your environment, you can?t protect yourself if you don?t even know what you have to protect. If you?re on a limited budget, no problem, just concentrate on what?s most important to protect right now and work from there.

Once again, the ability for the CEO, CFO, CIO, or CISO to be able to build a relationship and collaborate, I can?t stress this enough, is paramount. ?Techie? talk isn?t sexy by any means, but it has to be understood on even high levels that everyone can be a stop gate or can be the catalyst to a massive intrusion. The barrier does have to come down and the old way of thinking, ?I?m not a gadget guy, that?s someone else?s problem? has to migrate to the idea that this is an Asymmetrical Battlefield meaning a 360 degree fight. There are no ?front lines?; everybody?s a target.

If you don?t get an opportunity to watch the webcast, I strongly recommend you do, then know this:

  • It starts with the human end user. We?re all in this toghether, so let?s be proactive in identifying what doesn?t look right, no matter how small, and report it.
  • Lean on your basic fundamentals either as an IT professional or the policy that outlines use of devices.
  • Create an environment that is conducive for incident responders to do their job by making sure their main focus is incident response
  • And lastly know that nothing will change if a proactive approach is not taken by both ?Techie?s? and ?Non-Techie?s?. Collaborate and Integrate.

It was great serving you this month! Please protect yourselves and help protect whatever agency or company you may be working for. Cyberspace is limitless and endless; we may never have a full grasp but we can start with a basic knowledge. You can check out MS-ISAC if you would like to know more.

Humbly Yours,

Mark

Taylors Sky cementing his way for unprecedented success

The truly phenomenal greyhound trainer, Charlie Lister, has been blessed with the talent of conditioning winner after a winner. His entries in any race are feared the most. In the case of Westmead Hawk and his son, Taylors Sky, it will be difficult to say if the trainer was lucky to have them or were the hounds fortunate to get the hall mark trainer to attend to them.

The two had, and in case of Taylors Sky, will bring him success and prosperity. First, Taylor Sky?s sire brought the 2005 and 2006 English Greyhound Derby for the kennel and now the son is following right in the tracks. It seems highly unlikely that the three-year-old white and blue dog will disappoint the trainer in future too.

The young hound under the ownership of Steve and Becky Taylor already is very popular due to the 2011 English Greyhound Derby and also the title of 2011 Greyhound of the Year. He was awarded the honour by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain for winning thirteen out of the seventeen races the previous year.

From the dam, Rising Angel, it took the three-year-old only ten career outings to prove himself worthy for contesting the 2011 English Greyhound Derby. He was entered as the 100 to 1 in the qualifying rounds, and managed getting the icing on the cake even before it was baked.

The incredible racing icon broke the track record in the quarter finals. Adding further glamour and glitz to his success, Taylors Sky won from the trap that had defeated hounds racing out of it for the last twenty-six years.

He took off from the red box, and took charge of the track from the first bend, he did not only win by the massive margin of 5 ? lengths, but was remarkable enough to set yet another track record.

He completed the trip in 28.17 seconds.

Besides the Derby, he has accumulated the winning titles of the Ladbrokes Gold Cup and the Primus Telecom Derby. The 2011 Greyhound of the Year is already the most popular entry for the 2012 English Greyhound Derby.

How I Automated the Boring Parts of Life

How I Automated the Boring Parts of LifeTwitpic CTO Steven Corona found himself doing something many of us are guilty of?waiting until the last minute. Instead of fighting procrastination with sheer willpower, Steve turned to automation for booking flights, shopping, and more. The cost? Surprisingly low. Here's how he did it.

I have a bad habit: waiting until the last minute to do things. Like, last month I had to fly to New York to run a 193 mile relay race. I knew about the trip for almost 6 months, but didn't buy plane tickets until 3 days before, at 4x the cost. True dedication to the art of procrastination. You can call me somewhat of an expert, and it's one of my biggest shortcomings.

It's not because I'm lazy?in fact, the exact opposite is true. I'm incredibly productive. I move fast, but I single task. I don't bounce around with a million things at once because of the incredible cost of context switching. Spending time planning trips, picking flights, and buying tickets just doesn't really seem important to me until it's 3 days away.

Paying $700 bucks for plane tickets, though, when they should have cost $200, isn't the best move?so I've spent the past month trying to get a handle on my procrastination.

Fixing procrastination without willpower

Self-discipline and Willpower. Two words that aren't the solution. You only have a fixed amount of self-discipline and after it's been used up, you need to wait for it to recharge. If you "fix" a personality defect by brute-forcing with self-discipline, you'll be back in the same boat a week later.

I broke the cycle of procrastination and willpower exhaustion by automating the things I was putting off. Yup, I threw money at the problem, and it was cheaper than you think.

Get a personal assistant

Hold off your judgement for a second. I'm still new to the assistant thing, but it easily falls into the 10 most effective life changes I've ever made. Within the first 24 hours of having an assistant, I delegated 2 tasks that had been marinating in my todo list for months. You know, the thing you say you're going to finally get done every time Monday rolls around? Well last Monday, it finally got done and all I had to do was send an email. Mind blowing.

Total cost? $25 DOLLARS A MONTH. The service I use is FancyHands and it paid for itself on the first day.

Think it's ridiculous? So did I, but it ended up changing my entire workflow. Like, I just had them book an AirBnB place for a trip next month. Next month! This is coming from a guy that was buying plane tickets days before a trip.

If it doesn't end up being useful you can just have your assistant email me about how much I suck. Might as well get your money's worth.

Amazon Subscribe & Save and Emergency Deodorant

Maybe you've heard of it, maybe you haven't, but Amazon lets you setup reoccurring orders that get shipped automatically. It takes like 5 minutes to setup and has saved me so much frustration. I used to be the guy running to Target on the way out to buy a little thing I like to call "emergency deodorant." I've found myself standing in the deodorant aisle nonchalantly applying some Old Spice before taking it up to the register more times than I can count.

It was surprisingly hard to come up with ideas for using Subscribe and Save, so if you need some inspiration, check out the list of things Amazon automatically sends me. Fair warning: It's hilarious to open your door to a UPS guy carrying a 40-pack of toilet paper, IN THE ORIGINAL PACKAGING.

Automate the things you hate

Even though I really enjoy writing, I despise proofreading and editing. Like to the point where I rather just not write at all so I don't have to deal with the proofreading part. Nothing kills my flow more than having to re-read what I just wrote 1000 times.

Even though the book I'm working on has been an overall success, one of my biggest failures with the project has been not proofreading it. I'd fall into the cycle of just not writing, so I wouldn't have to proofread.

Instead of fighting it with willpower, I automated it. How? I tested both Mechanical Turk and Fiverr as proofreading platforms. Fiverr cost a total of $50 to have 62 pages edited. Just to give you an idea, editing 62 pages is my idea of a personal hell. But for less than a dollar/page, all of my hesitation, doubt, and negativity vanished.

Try it out today

You can automate almost all of the boring parts of your life, today, for less than 25 bucks and half an hour on Amazon. And make sure to have your assistant email me telling me how much time I saved you.

Former UFC fighter Shamar Bailey injured fighting a fire

Shamar Bailey was a part of the thirteenth season of "The Ultimate Fighter," fought twice in the Octagon, and also fought for Strikeforce and Bellator. While he's still fighting, he also works as a firefighter in Indianapolis and was injured Monday when working on a fire that was the work of an arsonist.

Bailey talked about the fire to Bloody Elbow, and said his injuries were routine.

We had a big fire yesterday involving a three story house. It flashed over on us while we were cutting holes in the roof. While we were cutting the holes, there was an explosion. The fire and smoke heated up to a release point and exploded in our faces. Fortunately, we had our masks on, but I did get some exposure in my chest area and on my wrists, and that's where I'm burnt. We went ahead with business and put the fire out, and I actually didn't realize until afterwards that I had been burned.

The house was considered a total loss, and the Indianapolis Fire Department is investigating the arson. Bailey has a fight scheduled against Gideon Ray in December, and doesn't think the second-degree burns he sustained will keep him from fighting.

Bailey isn't the only fighter who moonlights as a firefighter. Retired UFC fighter Chris Lytle worked as a firefighter in Indianapolis throughout his long MMA career, and Eddie Wineland works as a firefighter, as well.

HTC seeks to reverse sliding smartphone sales

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) ? Taiwan's HTC Corp. enjoyed three golden years as the first company to make smartphones based on Google's Android software. Now, it is struggling to halt a slide in sales and keep its status as a global brand in a market increasingly divided between Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co.

An early maker of smartphones sold under brands like HP and Compaq, HTC started stamping its own brand on phones in 2006. Taiwanese company surged into the fast lane two years later with its Android smartphones that appealed to consumers because of competitive prices on the free operating system and their strong design.

But its sales faltered from the second half of 2011, partly because its limited financial resources put it at a strong disadvantage to aggressive marketing drives by Samsung and Apple. And unlike its American competitor, it lacked a distinctive flagship phone that captured the hearts of consumers as a must-have product. Instead it produced many phones, trying to cater to a wide range of consumers.

HTC on Friday reported a 79 percent drop in third quarter profit to 3.9 billion New Taiwan dollars ($99 million) on revenue of NT$70 billion. It was HTC's fourth consecutive fall in quarterly profit.

Worse may be to come. It predicted revenue will drop to NT$60 billion in the fourth quarter despite traditional pre-Christmas buying and its introduction of two new models running on Microsoft's Windows 8 software.

"HTC is undergoing a difficult period of trial and error," said Stephen Su, market analyst at Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute.

"Its technology is good and its design capability is Taiwan's best," he said. "But like other Taiwanese makers, HTC falls behind in the area of practical application."

Su said HTC's unfamiliarity with Western markets puts it at a disadvantage in developing products for Western consumers ? in contrast to Apple, which always seems to be one step ahead of consumer sentiment, not only in the West, but all around the world.

HTC was founded in 1997 as a contract electronics manufacturer. Under its chief executive Peter Chou, the company focused decisively on smartphones in 2006, collaborating with U.S. carriers in marketing efforts.

HTC's performance reached its peak in the April-June period of 2011, when it shipped 12 million phones and its revenue totaled NT$125 billion.

The company's salvation may lie in pursuing alliances with tablet computer and TV makers so HTC phones can share entertainment and other programs with multiple devices just like iPhones do. The Taiwan maker has not publically addressed the question of a prospective alliance.

China's vast market could also offer HTC very good growth prospects. Economic ties and trade between China and Taiwan, which Beijing considers a breakaway province, have blossomed in recent years, providing new avenues of growth for many Taiwanese companies.

"The greater China market may be HTC's opportunity if they can make phones with features desired by the Chinese and possibly extend that experience to design products for Western consumers," said Su.

In China's fast growing smartphone market, HTC is expected to sell 6 million phones this year, ranking 10th, according to Taiwan's Topology Research Institute.

That would put it well behind Samsung's projected 32 million, Apple's 15 million and even Nokia's 11 million, the organization said. Total Chinese smartphone sales in 2013 will likely hit 256 million, up 36 percent on 2012, it said.

Dennis Chan, an analyst with Taiwan's Yuanta Core Pacific Securities, said that despite its current troubles, HTC can bounce back if it can come up with a new phone that resonates with consumers.

"The company is now rolling out only a few models instead of multiple phones to meet every taste as it used to," Chan said. "It will remain a recognized brand for high- and middle-end phones. But it needs to launch a flagship model with distinctive features to really turn things around."

New clues to how the brain and body communicate to regulate weight

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? Maintaining a healthy body weight may be difficult for many people, but it's reassuring to know that our brains and bodies are wired to work together to do just that -- in essence, to achieve a phenomenon known as energy balance, a tight matching between the number of calories consumed versus those expended. This careful balance results from a complex interchange of neurobiological crosstalk within regions of the brain's hypothalamus, and when this "conversation" goes awry, obesity or anorexia can result.

Given the seriousness of these conditions, it's unfortunate that little is known about the details of this complex interchange. Now research led by investigators at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) provides new insights that help bring order to this complexity. Described in the October 26 issue of the journal Cell, the findings demonstrate how the GABA neurotransmitter selectively drives energy expenditure, and importantly, also help explain the neurocircuitry underlying the fat-burning properties of brown fat.

"Our group has built up a research program with the overall goal of unraveling the 'wiring diagram' by which the brain controls appetite and the burning of calories," says senior author Bradford Lowell, MD, PhD, a Professor of Medicine in BIDMC's Division of Endocrinology and Harvard Medical School. "To advance our understanding to this level, we need to know the function of specific subsets of neurons, and in addition, the upstream neurons providing input to, and the downstream neurons receiving output from, these functionally defined neurons. Until recently, such knowledge in the hypothalamus has been largely unobtainable."

A pearl-sized region that directs a multitude of important functions in the body, the hypothalamus is the brain's control center for energy balance. This balance results when the brain receives feedback signals from the body that communicate the status of fuel stores and then integrates this with input from the external world as well as a person's emotional state to modify feeding behavior and energy expenditure.

In this new study, the researchers investigated a unique population of neurons that are located at the base of the brain in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. "We genetically engineered mice such that they have a specific defect that prevents these neurons from releasing the inhibitory neurotransmitter, GABA," says Lowell. "Mice with this defect developed marked obesity and, remarkably, their obesity was entirely due to a defect in burning off calories," he explains, adding that food intake was entirely unaffected.

By next engineering another group of mice in which these neurons could be selectively turned on at different times, the team went on to show that the arcuate neurons act through a series of downstream neurons to drive energy expenditure in brown fat. Brown fat has been making headlines lately because many recent studies have revealed that, unlike energy-storing white fat, brown fat burns energy to generate heat. This process is called thermogenesis.

"Energy expenditure mediated by brown adipose tissue is critical in maintaining body weight and prevents diet-induced obesity. Its brain-based regulatory mechanism, however, is still poorly understood," says first author Dong Kong, PhD, an Instructor in Medicine in Lowell's laboratory. "Our discovery of a hypothalamus-based neurocircuit that ultimately controls thermogenesis is an important advance," adds Lowell. The investigators additionally found that when they turned on these neurons, energy expenditure was entirely dependent upon release of GABA. These results reveal that release of GABA from arcuate neurons selectively drives energy expenditure.

"Our findings have greatly advanced our understanding in the control of energy expenditure and have provided novel insights into the pathogenesis of obesity," says Kong.

The unique features of arcuate neurons are important because they could provide an opportunity to experimentally modify the brain's control of energy expenditure. Specifically, neurons receiving GABA-mediated signals from arcuate neurons are likely to play important roles in regulating energy expenditure, but not food intake.

"It is now important to fully delineate the upstream neurons that control these thermogenesis-regulating arcuate neurons, and also the downstream neurons that complete the 'circuit' to brown adipose tissue," Lowell adds. He and his colleagues have identified several specific types of neurons that act downstream of arcuate neurons, but more research is needed to provide a clear and definitive diagram. Such work could uncover new opportunities for pharmacologic interventions that might lead to effective treatments for obesity and its related complications such as diabetes.

Israeli PM's party to ally with ultranationalists

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's prime minister announced Thursday that he was joining forces with his hard-line foreign minister in upcoming elections, instantly creating a hawkish new bloc that now appears poised to lead the country.

The deal between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party and Avigdor Lieberman's Yisrael Beitenu makes the new ticket the clear front-runner in the January elections, giving the ultranationalist foreign minister, a staunch opponent of concessions to the Palestinians, a major say in any future peace efforts. It also raises speculation that centrist opposition parties might now be compelled to unite as well.

"We are facing great challenges and this is the time to unite forces for the sake of Israel. Therefore Likud and Yisrael Beitenu will run together on the same ticket in the next elections," Netanyahu said at a news conference.

"We are asking for a mandate from the public to lead Israel against security threats, above all preventing Iran from arming itself with nuclear weapons and the struggle against terror," he said.

Israelis vote for political parties, not individual candidates. The leader of the bloc with the most seats in the 120-member parliament usually serves as prime minister of a coalition government.

Likud has been leading in opinion polls, but the resurgent Labor Party has been making gains by criticizing the outgoing government's record on economic and social issues.

Analysts suggested Netanyahu took Thursday's step in order to head off the possibility of a broad centrist bloc led by Labor. Together with Yisrael Beitenu, Likud could control more than 40 parliamentary seats, based on recent polls, making it roughly twice as large as Labor.

But polls have suggested that even with a center-left alliance, Netanyahu's bloc would still win.

Opposition lawmakers said the new alliance created an extremist party opposed to peace that would alienate many moderate voters. Labor's leader, Shelly Yachimovich, urged her centrist rivals to rally behind her.

"I call on all the centrist forces in the Israeli political map to join with Labor ... to not let the Lieberman-Netanyahu government rule," she said. Yachimovich called Netanyahu's new coalition "racist" and called on "moderate voters on the right" to join Labor.

Opposition leader Shaul Mofaz of the Kadima party also called for the center party to unite, dubbing Netanyahu's hawkish union "a wake-up call." Israel Radio political analyst Hanan Kristal said Netanyahu's move would guarantee victory for the new bloc in the upcoming election. He said Likud might lose some moderate voters but they would be few.

"The big question now is about Lieberman, now that he is Netanyahu's number two," Kristal said. "Will he be the defense minister or deputy prime minister? Or remain foreign minister?"

Lieberman, who once worked as a bar bouncer, immigrated to Israel in 1978 from Moldova in the former Soviet Union. He became a national figure in 1996 as a top aide to Netanyahu during his previous term as prime minister. He later quit Netanyahu's Likud party and was elected to parliament in 1999 as head of Yisrael Beitenu (Israel Our Home), a secular hawkish party he established to represent the more than 1 million immigrants from the former Soviet Union.

His party has gained strength since then and was the third largest in the 2009 elections, drawing many votes from native Israelis as well as his traditional base.

Lieberman is known for inflammatory rhetoric that has at times agitated his partners in government. He has called for executing Israeli Arab lawmakers who met with leaders of the militant group Hamas.

More recently, Lieberman pushed a series of legislative proposals that critics said were anti-Arab, including a failed attempt to require Israelis to sign a loyalty oath or have their citizenship revoked.

He embarrassed Netanyahu in the past by expressing contrasting views to that of the government, including skepticism over the chances of reaching peace with the Palestinians.

Lieberman has called the Palestinian President an "obstacle to peace," and urged his removal so that peace talks that collapsed in 2008 could be revived.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian investigators on Friday charged protest leader Sergei Udaltsov with plotting riots, in a case that has raised alarm among rights activists and Western governments.

The Federal Investigative Committee formally charged Udaltsov in morning questioning, after a pro-Kremlin TV channel broadcast footage from a hidden camera which it said showed him conspiring with a Georgian politician.

Udaltsov faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted in the case, which he and other Kremlin critics say is part of a tightening clampdown on dissent since Vladimir Putin started a fresh six-year presidential term in May amid a wave of protests.

Unlike two lesser-known activists charged in the same case, Udaltsov was not detained but has been ordered to remain in Moscow pending further investigation and possible trial.

One of the two, Leonid Razvozzhayev, said he was abducted in Ukraine last week and tortured. He has formally retracted his confession, his lawyer Mark Feigin said on Thursday.

Several people gathered outside the Investigative Committee building in Moscow to support Udaltsov. One held a banner reading: "I demand an end to repression and torture".

On arrival at the Investigative Committee building for questioning, the shaven-headed Udaltsov raised clenched fists.

"I'm not guilty of anything, I hold my head high," he said.

Udaltsov was among the leaders of a series of protests prompted by allegations of fraud in a December 2011 parliamentary election won by Putin's ruling United Russia party.

Putin, in power since 2000, won a new term in March. Opponents say he has used legislation and criminal cases to curb opposition.

Expat Marketing ? Targeting expats online at Christmas

advertising expats christmas

Targeting expats at Christmas time can be tricky, here two British retailers have shared their tactics with us.

Companies who are targeting an international, expatriate market this Christmas will be facing additional challenges attracting and capturing their audience. Of course, the normal problems apply ? how to reach your audience or which media to use. But at Christmas, you find increased competition and a relatively shorter time period to capture your target group.

For most marketers, Christmas planning gets underway in September/October, or sometimes even earlier. John Lewis, a major British department store, has already launched its online Christmas shop, which allows expats to buy their gifts and decorations at an early stage.

Christmas commercials

Competitions and promotions for international customers is one marketing tool used by John Lewis. The retailer will run a competition at the end of October, specifically for international customers, which gives them the chance to win their Christmas wish list, valued up to ?2,000.

As well as having a dedicated Christmas advertisement running on British TV, John Lewis also makes savvy use of the Internet by streaming commercials on YouTube. Christmas ads are an invaluable tool for reaching a wider audience during this time of the year. Last year, John Lewis? ad, The Long Wait, attracted one million views in five days on YouTube. This is quite impressive when advertisers have been predicting the end of commercials with viewers using systems such as Sky+ and TiVo to skip them.

Targeting expats at Christmas

Businesses are increasingly making use of a range of media channels to reach out to international customers. From traditional banner advertising to social media and language targeted campaigns.

Faizal Luttamaguzi, international marketing executive at John Lewis, said, ?We use a variety of channels to reach out to the expat community, from traditional display and search activity to specialized and very targeted expat outlets. One example is our partnership with the British newspaper, The Telegraph, in which we are sponsoring their Best of British Awards.?

These awards aim to find the best expat-run establishments around the world in various categories such as, British pub, British social club or British shop. The nominees are voted for by expats, which makes it a highly specialised campaign.

Dedicated newsletters to international customers are another great marketing tool. They can be tailored to an expat audience with things such as Christmas order dates and special offers. British Corner Shop employs this technique during this time of the year and sells over 8,000 British products on its website, and delivers to any country in the world.

Hannah Ward, marketing assistant at British Corner Shop, said, ?We use a wide variety of media to attract our target audience, such as banner campaigns on expat relevant websites, PPC campaigns, social media, email newsletters, blogs and good content on our website.?

Things to remember

When your audience is scattered around the world, marketers face additional challenges.

?The main thing to bare in mind when targeting people living abroad are the international delivery times around Christmas,? Luttamaguzi explained.

Therefore, John Lewis and other international retailers need to work hard to remind their customers abroad of the final cut-off date for international Christmas orders, for example, 13 December for products from the UK.

Ward said, ?To utilise this busy period we make sure we have an extensive Christmas Collection, full of the most sort after Christmas products, and we promote this collection extensively via our email newsletter, social media sites, homepage and blog.?

Future of online retail

Online shopping is becoming increasingly popular with Christmas sales growing every year. In the UK, online sales increased 30 percent from 2010 to 2011. With business in the week before Christmas 2011 almost doubling compared to the previous year.
online retail
In the United States more than half (51.8%) of consumers will shop online this holiday season, according to statistics from the National Retail Federation. This is an increase from 46.7 percent last year.

Currently, 43 percent of EU citizens shop online. However, few people buy online from companies outside their home country. This supports the idea that expats living abroad return to trusted names from home when shopping online. However, the European Commission (EC) is looking to break down borders in online marketing. If this is the future then online retailers could access a much wider international market.

?There are still too many barriers for easy cross-border purchases,? says Neelie Kroes, the European Commission vice president responsible for the Digital Agenda. ?As many as 60% of attempted cross-border Internet shopping orders fail due to technical or legal reasons, such as the refusal of non-domestic credit cards. As long as we have a market with borders, there can be no true digital single market.? ?

Stock investors wary as profit picture dims

Both financial and technology stocks have been the major pillars for the equity market, so how might earnings season impact sentiment next week? David Darst, Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, and CNBC's Bob Pisani share their opinions.

By Reuters

Earnings season is heating up, but investors' feet are getting cold.

Central bank-fueled gains took markets within reach of five-year highs in September, but U.S. stock market participants are shifting their focus back to corporate outlooks, and the picture is not pretty.

Early earnings reports have underlined those concerns, which may be exacerbated when dozens of major companies - including Dow components General Electric, Microsoft Corp and International Business Machines Corp - report this week.

"Caution is definitely the operative word as Europe and China look to continue dragging on earnings," said Michael Loewengart, director of investment strategy at E-Trade Financial in New York. "The overall tone is so pessimistic that we may see some upside surprises, but we could still suffer considerable losses if the news is bad."

Profits of S&P 500 companies are seen dropping 3 percent this quarter from a year ago, the first decline in three years. Corporate results are expected to have been hurt by China's slowing growth and Europe's debt crisis, which recently prompted the International Monetary Fund to cut its 2012 economic growth outlook.

Financial stocks will be especially in focus, with Bank of America Corp, Citigroup Inc, Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Morgan Stanley all set to report.

Results on Friday from JPMorgan Chase & Co and Wells Fargo & Co generated some caution about the group despite both reporting record profits. Wells Fargo posted disappointing revenue and a bigger drop in net interest margin than had been anticipated.

Wells Fargo shares slumped 2.6 percent to $34.25 while JPMorgan lost 1.1 percent to $41.62 despite bullish commentary about the housing market.

"We need to see big banks doing well, and JPMorgan or Wells didn't give us the boost we were hoping for," said Wayne Kaufman, chief market analyst at John Thomas Financial in New York. "Citigroup is the one we're looking for. If profits come in worse than expected there, that would make me more bearish about the economy in general."

Fewer companies beat the street
With only 6 percent of S&P 500 companies having reported, 59 percent of companies have topped profit expectations - less than the average beat rate of 67 percent for the past four quarters, according to Thomson Reuters data. Half of the companies have beaten on revenue, while a quarter missed profit forecasts.

"We need to see the beat rate pick up well into the 60s if we want the market to have any support," Kaufman said.

The S&P 500 fell 2.2 percent last week, its biggest weekly percentage drop since June, on caution about the season after a number of bellwethers warned about their outlooks, including Chevron Corp and Alcoa Inc.

Profits are being dragged down by material and energy stocks, with the former seen dropping 24 percent, and the latter expected to fall 19 percent.

In contrast, aggregate profit growth for financials is seen up 1.6 percent.

Trading could be especially volatile on the Nasdaq, with a number of tech titans on tap, including Microsoft, Google Inc , IBM and Intel Corp, which recently cut its outlook.

"Tech results can be a good proxy for business spending, which will give us a sense of how companies are viewing the future," said John Carey, portfolio manager at Pioneer Investment Management in Boston.

Carey, who helps oversee about $200 billion in assets, said outlooks were still too optimistic, "so I've pulled in my horns a bit, and have become more defensive."

Blue chips, Greece and data
McDonald's Corp, UnitedHealth Group and Johnson & Johnson are also scheduled to report earnings, along with General Electric, which E-Trade's Loewengart said would be particularly watched, given the company's diversified operations.

Trading will also be influenced by the news flow in Europe, where a summit of finance ministers will take place. The Wall Street Journal reported that a deal on austerity measures for Greece could be reached in time for the meeting.

In the realm of U.S. economic data, investors will look ahead to readings on retail sales, the Consumer Price Index and existing-home sales. September retail sales are seen rising 0.8 percent, while the overall CPI for September is expected to gain 0.5 percent, and September existing-home sales are forecast to fall 2 percent, according to economists polled by Reuters.?

Health Care It Scope ? ? Personal Health Record Usage and ...

Patients say they want transparency and instant access to their healthcare information, yet most remain on the sidelines when it comes to using these tools. Maybe that?s no surprise when many physicians are still getting up to speed on EHRs. That may change ? and soon. Stage 2 of the federal EHR meaningful use incentive programs requires that eligible providers make more healthcare information available electronically to more patients starting in 2014 ? personal health records (PHRs) can help physicians reach that goal.

Still, meaningful use is not the primary motivator for PHR adoption, say medical practices using the technology successfully. Instead, it is driven by patient expectations, adept integration of information systems, and demands for value from physicians, patients, and payers.

So far, the PHR installations that seem to gain the quickest acceptance from patients share three elements: user-friendly technology, tie-in to a medical practice?s website, and the encouragement of physician advocates.

Here?s more information on what?s driving the adoption of PHRs, what value they bring to practices and patients, and key tips for implementing them and encouraging patients to use them.

Patient expectations

Although recent surveys indicate disinterest in PHRs among patients ? about 10 percent of Americans used them in 2011, according to Deloitte Center for Health Solutions ? Brock Morris, chief information officer at Redmond, Wash.-based Pediatric Associates, hears a different story from parents of the practice?s patients. That?s probably no surprise, he says. Many of the parents bringing their children to the 85-physician multisite practice also work for the city?s top private employer, Microsoft Corporation. ?The parents of our patients tend to be a technically-minded demographic,? Morris says. ?We get asked all the time: ?What new services and solutions can you provide us???

PHRs, he adds, are a natural extension of his patients? parents? everyday experiences. ?The parents are used to having information at their fingertips and being able to control it. They are frustrated when they want their child?s immunizations or a growth chart and are told they have to wait a few days. In almost every other environment today, people get information quickly and can manage it themselves.?

As younger, more tech-savvy patients become more active users of medical practices, the drive toward PHR adoption will increase. Indeed, Morris notes that younger generations of patients, including the parents he hears from at Pediatric Associates, gravitate to websites, text messaging, and other forms of communication.

Improved capabilities

Pediatric Associates is one of several practices around the nation involved in pilot testing interfaces between Microsoft?s Web-based HealthVault PHR and their EHRs ? Greenway?s EHR in the case of Pediatric Associates. The approach aims to tie PHRs to EHRs via websites and, potentially, tie both to the medical devices patients use at home.

Morris says the beta version his practice is trying out allows parents to pull continuity-of-care documents (CCDs) about their child?s care from the EHR and into HealthVault. Parents also can hook up their child?s glucose monitor ? and soon, other home health devices ? to electronically enter data into the PHR to share with the child?s medical team.

The pilot projects hope to overcome a barrier hobbling the prospects of free-standing, or ?untethered,? PHRs ? lack of tight integration with a patient?s clinical records and his provider?s website.

Any individual can use HealthVault on the Web or via apps to create untethered accounts. But because HealthVault also supports common exchange formats, like CCDs, it essentially becomes a tethered system capable of electronically connecting with home health devices and a configured EHR.?

Personal Growth Is The Same As Individual Development

Almost anyone you know has the ability to give you insight into who you are from their perspective. Your friends, family and colleagues all know you pretty well.

TIP! Rid your life of unnecessary stress. You only create more stress than before when you over-react to negative events, and that is pointless.

You have to be in good physical shape if you want your personal development efforts to be as effective as possible. Simple activities like getting enough sleep, regular exercise and a healthy diet help your energy level remain high, giving you a greater chance of success on your self improvement quest. While it may sound simple, this is sometimes one of the most difficult things to do.

TIP! Encouraging faith by love will lead to a higher level of personal development. Faith cannot exist without love.

Begin today setting some money aside regularly for emergencies. This can help you to avoid always turning to your credit cards every time something unexpected arises. If you take a few dollars and put them into an emergency fund every week, you will build a nice amount of money to use whenever something unexpected arises. That fund can help us both in the short term and in the long term as our debt decreases instead of grows.

TIP! It helps to see your good points in writing. Write down everything you like about yourself.

Track your progress better through proper organization. Take your major goals, and break them down into small, manageable components. You can then achieve each of these minor goals more quickly. Monitor how you are doing using your daily planner, or you can make a journal that is specific to your goals for self improvement.

TIP! It is possible to handle difficult situations without allowing yourself to become overly emotional. If you can remain calm during stressful situations, you will feel confident enough to face anything.

Accomplish the things in life you want to accomplish. Not taking action to change your life just means you?ll be stuck with your current one forever. Take action on your dreams and do what you can to make them a reality.

TIP! Taking steps to improve your health is a very important part of personal development. In order to maintain a healthy body, you have to stay motivated to practice healthy eating habits and exercise.

Scrutinize your heart, soul and mind rather than being engrossed with your physical appearance. In the end, your looks do not matter that much. It is your personality and character traits that are going to define who you are in life. Work on improving yourself as a whole person rather than superficial changes.

TIP! Make each day a better one than the last. You should always try to improve yourself.

Research positive habits that have helped others become successful. Pick out the most essential success habits from each person you research, then practice these habits until they embed themselves into your daily routine. Persevere in developing good habits, realizing that they come in time. Many people accept the adage that habits are engrained within you in as little as 21 days.

TIP! The first step in any personal development program is the realization that you have room for improvement. Humans are just a very small bit of the universe.

A good attitude is essential to personal growth. A negative attitude won?t help you advance in life and may actually lead you down the wrong path. Instead, let go of negative thinking. Make a choice everyday to look on the positive side of things and watch your goal progression improve.

TIP! In order to expand your horizons, you should first make a list of goals. As an example, if confidence is what you are after, jot it down.

You should feel comfortable in your own skin and being the person that you are. Remember that everyone is unique, and do not feel bad if you are not the best at everything. Don?t worry about the skills you haven?t acquired yet, focus your attention on the skills you are already good at.

TIP! None of us can say that we haven?t made mistakes from time to time. One of the biggest mistakes that we often choose to ignore is our choice in foods.

It is important to know yourself and accept who you are as a person. Treat yourself kindly and be honest with yourself as the years pass, and enjoy knowing the one person who knows you best

Russia beats Portugal 1-0 in World Cup qualifying

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:42 p.m. ET Oct. 12, 2012

MOSCOW (AP) -Alexander Kerzhakov scored early in the first half to give Russia a 1-0 win over Portugal in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup on Friday.

The Zenit St. Petersburg striker scored with a low shot past diving goalkeeper Rui Patricio six minutes into the game from a Roman Shirokov cross.

It was Russia's only shot on goal in the first half. Portugal dominated possession for the rest of the match but failed to score.

Portugal had its first chance to equalize in the 15th minute but goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev blocked Bruno Alves' header from a corner kick.

Portugal was then forced into an early substitution when Miguel Lopes came on for the injured Fabio Coentrao.

The visitors' star forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, who had overcome a shoulder injury to play in the game, never came close in the first half though Nani constantly threatened the Russian defense on the right flank.

The Manchester United midfielder had his first attempt on goal in the 28th but shot over the bar.

Three minutes later Helder Postiga fired from inside the box but his shot was also too high.

Russia could have doubled the lead on a counterattack but Kerzhakov's cross from the right sailed over the far corner of the net in the 33rd.

Nani and Postiga each had a chance later but Akinfeev blocked their shots.

Ronaldo also fired a free kick right into Akinfeev hands at the end of the first half.

Portugal continued its domination after the break and Ronaldo missed his best chance in the 58th when he was too slow to connect with Nani's cross inside the box allowing defender Sergei Ignashevich to intercept.

"Maybe we weren't as calm as we usually are," Portugal coach Paulo Bento said. "Everyone can make mistakes, even the coach can make mistakes. We lost the ball a lot of times."

With time winding down, Alexander Kokorin broke free but his shot was parried by Patricio. Shirokov was the first to the rebound but his shot went wide.

"It was a tough match, but today I've seen that team on the pitch which I saw at practice all this week," Russia coach Fabio Capello said. "The players played with huge desire and commitment."

With the victory, Capello continued his 100 percent record in competitive matches as Russia's new coach.

Russia scored nine goals and Akinfeev has not conceded in the three matches since the Italian manager took over.

The victory put Russia on top of the Group F standings with nine points from three games. Portugal is second with six points.

Russia next hosts Azerbaijan while Portugal will be at home against Northern Ireland on Tuesday. Israel and Luxemburg are also in the group.
