Easy Home Improvement Strategies To Add Ambience And Security To Your Home

There are many factors that homeowners feel caught merely because they own a home of their own. Their homes are not energy effective, and they may like to spend their funds on something else. But in the extended run, the savings realize from higher power fees can create it worthwhile. It is always suggested that you choose smartly when doing something for home. Losing heat through your attic could be a project you want to take on initially. Thermal insulation is normally the number one choice. It is recommended that you add it to the walls and floor of the attic. You should figure out techniques, after finishing this project, to further better your home's stamina efficiency.

Homes that have more than one story frequently may have a quite general sort of railing for their stairs. You may normally see a truly standard type of metal railing on nearly all of these. Naturally this project might eventually be swapping the boring railings with some with a little more character. After going online and seeing the range of wooden stair rails accessible, you will recognize why this is a advantageous project to take on. The different kinds of lumber these railings are made from are endless. Not to mention that these railings usually have a lot more character than the standard ones that may be present. Upon seeing the variety of railings you may utilize in your home; you will never appreciate an old general type of railing again.

We all know that crime has risen in the past years due to the general economic climate. So consider installing a small-scale safety program as a home improvement project. For instance, you can find all types of exterior lights that are used with a motion detector. Depending upon the sensitivity of the lights, they could turn on almost quickly when somebody walks by. If you wish To become truly secure, installing a hidden camera outside that sends videos and images to a remote monitor is also an option. What you can then do is see the monitor from your bedroom or any room in your house.

A deep basin in your basement could be a very valuable addition. Many of the time, these are just utility and general purpose use basins. The purpose this sink will serve may prove to be of terrific value. Some points are too large for your kitchen sink and might be accommodated by this 1. If you do minor repairs on your car, for instance; you will have a region to clean up afterwards. Putting in this type of basin is not unusually difficult. If you are a novice plumber you should be able to work yourself, or you are able to always consider hiring a pro plumber.

The planet today is not a secure place, and doing house improvement projects that enhance your total security is a must. You can really invest fairly little cash and have a safety program installed that works. The best method to receive started is by assessing the requirements of the home. After that, simply go online and start looking at all the solutions available.

Invest A.D. launches UCITS funds for Africa and GCC

Abu Dhabi asset manager Invest A.D. has launched two UCITS-compliant funds, which invest in Africa and the Arabian Gulf, to meet growing global demand for high-quality investment products to tap frontier market growth.

The Invest A.D. Emerging Africa Fund and the Invest A.D. GCC Focus Fund are registered in Luxembourg, and the asset manager is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority.

Invest A.D.'s portfolio managers, who have built track records for the predecessor portfolios as Cayman Islands-registered vehicles, manage the funds from the Dubai International Financial Centre, travelling regularly to countries they invest in.

"We've established these UCITS funds in response to growing demand for high-quality access to frontier markets," said Mohammed Al Hashemi, head of asset management at Invest A.D.

"Global investors are telling us that they want investment vehicles that meet the strictest international regulatory standards, as well as fund managers who are visiting companies and asking the difficult questions -- really kicking the tyres," he added.

In a recent survey of 158 global institutional investors by Invest A.D. and the Economist Intelligence Unit, 51 percent of respondents believed Africa will be the most attractive emerging market for investment over the next decade.

By 2016, all intend to have some investment in Africa, with a third expecting to allocate at least five percent of their total funds to the continent. Currently, almost half of respondents say they have either no exposure, or less than a one percent allocation to Africa.

Invest A.D. intends to continue attracting institutional investors, and plans to also make its UCITS-compliant funds available on fund platforms that target European retail investors. Since their introduction in 1985, UCITS funds have proliferated rapidly and now manage a total of over $7 trillion of assets.

By complying to strict standards set out in the European Union's UCITS IV directive, for example on disclosure and liquidity, asset managers may receive a "passport" to market funds to investors throughout the 27-country grouping.

The UCITS (Undertaking for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities) brand has also caught on globally as a well-supervised financial product, and Asian investors currently account for around 35 percent of net sales of UCITS investment vehicles.

Modern culture 44,000 years ago: Human behavior, as we know it, emerged earlier than previously thought

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? An international team of researchers, including scientists from Wits University, have substantially increased the age at which we can trace the emergence of modern culture, all thanks to the San people of Africa.

The research by the team, consisting of scientists from South Africa, France, Italy, Norway, the USA and Britain, will be published in two articles online in the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The paper titled "Early evidence of San material culture represented by organic artifacts from Border Cave, South Africa" was authored by Francesco d'Errico, Lucinda Backwell, Paola Villa, Ilaria Degano, Jeannette Lucejko, Marion Bamford, Thomas Higham, Maria Perla Colombini, and Peter Beaumont.

Doctor Backwell is a senior researcher in palaeoanthropology, and Professor Bamford a palaeobotanist at the Bernard Price Institute for Paleontological Research at Wits University.

"The dating and analysis of archaeological material discovered at Border Cave in South Africa, has allowed us to demonstrate that many elements of material culture that characterize the lifestyle of San hunter-gatherers in southern Africa, were part of the culture and technology of the inhabitants of this site 44,000 years ago," says Backwell.

A key question in human evolution is when in prehistory human cultures similar to ours emerged? Until now, most archaeologists believed that the oldest traces of San hunter-gatherer culture in southern Africa dates back 10,000, or at most 20,000 years.

The international team of researchers, led by Francesco d'Errico, Director of Research at the French National Research Centre, dated and directly analyzed objects from archaeological layers at Border Cave.

Located in the foothills of the Lebombo Mountains in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, the site has yielded exceptionally well-preserved organic material.

Backwell says their results have shown without a doubt that at around 44,000 years ago the people at Border Cave were using digging sticks weighted with perforated stones, like those traditionally used by the San.

"They adorned themselves with ostrich egg and marine shell beads, and notched bones for notational purposes. They fashioned fine bone points for use as awls and poisoned arrowheads. One point is decorated with a spiral groove filled with red ochre, which closely parallels similar marks that San make to identify their arrowheads when hunting," says Backwell.

Chemical analysis of residues on a wooden stick decorated with incisions reveals that, like San objects used for the same purpose, it was used to hold and carry a poison containing ricinoleic acid found in castor beans. This represents the earliest evidence for the use of poison.

A lump of beeswax, mixed with the resin of toxic Euphorbia, and possibly egg, was wrapped in vegetal fibers made from the inner bark of a woody plant. "This complex compound used for hafting arrowheads or tools, directly dated to 40,000 years ago, is the oldest known evidence of the use of beeswax," says Backwell.

Warthog tusks were shaped into awls and possibly spear heads. The use of small pieces of stone to arm hunting weapons is confirmed by the discovery of resin residue still adhering to some of the tools, which chemical analysis has identified as a suberin (waxy substance) produced from the sap of Podocarpus (yellowwood) trees.

The study of stone tools discovered in the same archaeological layers as the organic remains, and from older deposits, shows a gradual evolution in stone tool technology. Organic artifacts, unambiguously reminiscent of San material culture, appear relatively abruptly, highlighting an apparent mismatch in rates of cultural change. This finding supports the view that what we perceive today as "modern behavior" is the result of non-linear trajectories that may be better understood when documented at a regional scale.

Can Bacteria Fight Brain Cancer?

News | Health

The thinking behind an approach that has caused trouble in California

brain-tumor surgery Infections occurring after brain tumor surgery may cause cancer regression. Image: Doctor Stock/Getty

By Monya Baker of Nature magazine

Last week, the Sacramento Bee reported that two neurosurgeons at the University of California, Davis, had been banned from research on humans after deliberately infecting three terminally ill cancer patients with pathogenic bacteria in an attempt to treat them. All three died, two showing complications from the infection. Nature explores what happened and the science behind it.

Who authorized the researchers to infect the patients?
All three patients consented to infection. However, anyone testing experimental drugs in the United States requires approval from their university?s Institutional Review Board (IRB) and oversight by the country's Food and Drug Administration (FDA), both of which review evidence for safety and efficacy. Neurosurgeons Paul Muizelaar and Rudolph Schrot at the University of California (UC), Davis, did not obtain this approval; they say they did not think it was required. Harris Lewin, the vice-chancellor of research at UC Davis, wrote a letter to the FDA describing what had occurred as ?serious and continuing noncompliance?.

In 2008, working under instructions from Muizelaar, Schrot asked the FDA about the possibility of deliberately infecting a postoperative wound in a particular patient with glioblastoma with the bacterium Enterobacter aerogenes. He was told that animal studies were needed first. Muizelaar did not infect that patient, but arranged for a graduate student to begin tests in rats. Although bacteria were purchased as research materials not to be used in humans, they were eventually used in three other patients with glioblastoma.

The first of those asked Muizelaar about infection in 2010, and Schrot contacted the director of UC Davis?s IRB asking permission to perform what Lewin?s letter describes as a ?one-time procedure? not intended as research. The director concluded that this procedure could be classed as ?innovative care? that did not require approval by the FDA or IRB, but that subsequent work should be reviewed. Schrot and Muizelaar went on to treat two further patients and were seeking approval from an ad hoc ethics committee (not the IRB or FDA) to treat five more when the IRB director told the neurosurgeons to cease and desist, and began an internal investigation.

How is brain cancer usually treated?
Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain cancer and is usually treated with surgery, as well as with radiation and chemotherapy. However, the cancer almost always recurs after surgery. Half of patients die within 15 months of diagnosis; fewer than one in twenty lives longer than five years.

Why might an infection fight cancer?
There are isolated reports of patients with various types of cancer successfully fighting off an infection only to find that the cancer has also disappeared. Presumably, the infection spurs white blood cells to attack both pathogens and malignant cells. In 1999, researchers at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson described four case studies in which the regression of malignant brain tumors co-occurred with infection. Enterobacter aerogenes, the same bacterium used at UC Davis, was recovered from microbial cultures taken from three of the patients.

What further studies have been done?
In 2004, a group led by Bert Vogelstein at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Maryland introduced cancer cells into mice and rabbits, allowed large tumors to form and then injected the animals with spores of the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium novyi-NT. About one-third of the animals' tumors disappeared, apparently as a result of an immune response.

Penelope wants to strech out to relatives and caregivers of special children

BLESSINGS come in many guises. For Penelope Gan, it came on May 12, 2003, when her elder sister, Valerie, gave birth to Bryant. He was innate with intelligent palsy.

From thereon, a life of a family, quite Valerie?s and Penelope?s, centred on hospitals. Doctors told them Bryant would not live long, though any transparent timeline, quoting weeks to decades. Typically, they pronounced a baby with injuries as serious as Bryant?s, customarily don?t make it by childhood.

?It was afterwards that my sister started essay journals on all about Bryant ? his days spent in hospitals and a tour vital with a exceedingly mind harmed child. I, on a other hand, spent my days during a hospital?s neonatal complete caring units and high dependency wards, sewing one-off felted appliqued garments for him and formulating handmade decors for his hothouse that incorporated cognitive and feeling elements with a wish that he might one day arise adult and be means to see or hear them,? says Penelope.

All these led to a formulating of a initial scrapbook on Byrant.

?It was zero like a standard scrapbook. We didn?t know what refuge was all about, so we used charming paper from present shops and a homes. Of course, these were not acid-free and a tough work started to spin yellow really quickly,? she says.

The sisters chanced on ?scrapbooking? while browsing a web in hunt of colourful, patterned papers. They beheld that there were materials listed underneath a ?scrapbooking? territory on eBay.

?Scrapbooking was roughly unheard of here afterwards as a standard scrapbook shops didn?t exist! It was by eBay that we detected that embellishments and ribbons were renouned for scrapbooks and we became dependant to a ribbons online. We eventually collected ribbons and trims. we combed a souq in a Middle-East, flea markets in Europe and markets in Asia to move such ribbons home for my sister who couldn?t transport as often,? she says.

STARTING A BUSINESS

Many of a comparison trims and ribbons that Penelope bought abroad came in outrageous bolts and a sisters had to sell some to be means to means to buy others. In further to ribbons, they also bought a lot of scrapbooking things from manufacturers in a US.

Today, Scrap-n-Crop.com sells all from ribbons and paints to paper products for scrapbooking, card-making and other paper associated hobbies such as quilling, churned media and art journalling.

?The strange idea was for Scrap-n-Crop.com to be a part-time business to assistance means a hobby though as it grew some-more popular, we began to perform a thought of creation it a full-time business,? says Penelope.

Interestingly, when Scrap-n-Crop.com started, it was some-more renouned with tellurian business from as distant as Russia, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and a Middle-East. Today, many of a tellurian business are from Australia and Singapore and Penelope records that a internal marketplace is expanding fast as scrapbooking and card-making benefit popularity.

?We are still a tiny family-owned operation, with assistance from stay-at-home mums with mind harmed children. we demeanour into a offered aspects while my silent oversees a make-up and placement of products and my sister has her hands full with a accounting, purchasing and patron enquiries. Our stay-at-home mums have a flexi-hour arrangement and support a digital and artistic side of a business with website maintenance, newsletters, online subscription government and crafting ?Tips Techniques? for a calm of Scrap-n-Crop.com?s blog,? says Penelope.

WHAT NEXT

Where does Penelope wish to take Scrap-n-Crop.com?

?Our primary idea is to continue to yield sincerely labelled scrapbook products and to offer beneficial employment,? she says earnestly.

?We wish to be means to strech out to relatives with special needs children and be a source of anxiety for assistance in terms of childcare management, therapies and, some-more importantly, to inspire and change a mindset of relatives and caregivers of special needs children. We wish them to know that a attainment of such a child in their lives is not a finish of a universe or an inconvenience, though rather a special and pleasing present that God has entrusted to a comparison few.?
Bryant stays a epicentre in a lives of a sisters. Nine years on, he continues to dazzle doctors and those around him with his relentless courage, suggestion and will.

Penelope says: ?He is still stationary and is incompetent to eat, see or hear. CompTIA PC Support Interactive Career Certification Courses - Tera88

CompTIA Networking Tech Support Interactive Home-Study Training Courses

Today, most companies could not function efficiently without assistance from support workers fixing PC?s and networks, while giving advice to users each and every day. The world?s desire for the above mentioned individuals is ever increasing, as everything becomes progressively more technologically advanced.

So, why might we choose commercially accredited qualifications rather than the usual academic qualifications taught at schools and Further Education colleges? With an ever-increasing technical demand on resources, industry has had to move to the specialised training that can only come from the vendors ? for example companies such as Microsoft, CISCO, Adobe and CompTIA. Frequently this is at a far reduced cost both money and time wise. Academic courses, for example, can often get caught up in a lot of loosely associated study ? with a syllabus that?s far too wide. This prevents a student from understanding the specific essentials in enough depth.

In simple terms: Accredited IT qualifications give employers exactly what they?re looking for ? it says what you do in the title: i.e. I am a ?Microsoft Certified Professional? in ?Windows XP Administration and Configuration?. Consequently an employer can look at the particular needs they have and what certifications are required to fulfil that.

Considering the amount of options that are available, does it really shock us that most potential newcomers to the industry have no idea which career they will enjoy. Because without any previous experience in the IT industry, in what way could we know what someone in a particular job does? Ultimately, the right conclusion really only appears from a methodical study covering many varying key points:

* Personalities play a significant part ? what gets you ?up and running?, and what tasks ruin your day.

* Why you want to consider stepping into Information Technology ? maybe you want to triumph over a long-held goal such as being self-employed for example.

* Any personal or home needs that are important to you?

* Getting to grips with what the main job roles and sectors are ? including what sets them apart.

* How much effort you will put into the training program.

For the majority of us, considering each of these concepts will require meeting with someone that can investigate each area with you. Not only the qualifications ? but also the commercial requirements of the market as well. Browse Click here for info for current guidance.

Searching for your first position in IT is often made easier with the help of a Job Placement Assistance program. With the massive need for more IT skills in the United Kingdom at the moment, it?s not too important to become overly impressed with this service however. It really won?t be that difficult to land employment as long as you?re correctly trained and certified.

Advice and support about getting interviews and your CV may be available (if it isn?t, consult one of our sites). Be sure to you update that dusty old CV immediately ? not after you?ve qualified! Quite frequently, you will get your initial job while still studying (even in the early stages). If your CV doesn?t say what you?re learning (and it hasn?t been posted on jobsites) then you aren?t even in the running! If you?d like to get employment in your home town, then you?ll often find that a specialist locally based employment agency may be of more use than a national service, because they?re far more likely to be familiar with the jobs that are going locally.

A regular grievance of various course providers is how much students are prepared to study to pass exams, but how ill-prepared they are to market themselves for the role they?re trained for. Don?t falter at the last fence.

Computer Certification Courses In Microsoft SQL Databases Explained

All of us are short of time, and most often should we decide to study for a new career, taking a course at the same time as holding down a job is what we have to do. Training tracks certified by Microsoft can fill that gap. It?s a good idea to look for a person who?s got industry experience, who can give you some ideas on which area of the industry would be best, and what sort of tasks are correct for someone with your character and ability. When you?ve chosen the job you?d like to get into, a suitable training program must be selected that?s goes with your current level of knowledge and ability. This should be personalised for you.

Every program under consideration has to build towards a nationally (or globally) recognised qualification at the finale ? and not some unimportant ?in-house? plaque for your wall. Unless your qualification is issued by a conglomerate such as Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe, then chances are it will be commercially useless ? because no-one will recognise it.

So many training providers only concern themselves with gaining a certificate, and completely miss why you?re doing this ? getting yourself a new job or career. You should always begin with the end in mind ? don?t get hung-up on the training vehicle. Avoid becoming one of the unfortunate masses that choose a course that sounds really ?interesting? and ?fun? ? and end up with a certification for a job they hate.

Make sure you investigate how you feel about earning potential, career development, plus your level of ambition. It?s vital to know what will be expected of you, which accreditations are required and how you?ll gain real-world experience. All students are advised to speak to an experienced professional before they embark on a training course. This helps to ensure it features what is required for the career that is sought. Pop over to CompTIA PC Training Courses ? a closer look for superb guidelines.

Sometimes, people don?t understand what IT is all about. It is stimulating, innovative, and puts you at the fore-front of developments in technology that will impact the whole world for generations to come. Technology, computers and connections through the internet is going to dramatically shape the direction of our lives over future years; overwhelmingly so.

If money is high on your wish list, then you will be happy to know that the regular income of the majority of IT staff is considerably more than salaries in the rest of the economy. Demand for certified IT specialists is certain for a good while yet, because of the ongoing development in the technology industry and the very large shortage that remains.

Check out our web-site for smart info ? an introduction to MCSE MCSA Certification Courses and www.home-computer-courses.co.uk.

Clarifying Career PC Self-Study Training For Microsoft IT

Nice One! Reading this subject matter suggests you?re contemplating your career, and if it?s re-training you?re considering then you?ve already got further than most others. Did you know that hardly any of us describe ourselves as fulfilled and satisfied with our jobs ? but the majority will take no corrective action. We implore you to stand out from the crowd and take action ? those who do hardly ever regret it. Before you make decisions on any career courses, find an expert who can help you sort out what to look for. A person who will get to know your personality, and discover what job role you?ll be most comfortable with.

Prioritise the IT industry, that?s our recommendation ? it?s one of the only market sectors still on the grow in this country and overseas. And the salaries are much higher than most.

OK, why ought we to be looking at commercial qualifications instead of traditional academic qualifications taught at schools, colleges or universities? As we require increasingly more effective technological know-how, the IT sector has moved to specialist courses that the vendors themselves supply ? that is companies like CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA. Frequently this is at a far reduced cost both money and time wise. Academic courses, for example, often get bogged down in a lot of loosely associated study ? with a syllabus that?s far too wide. Students are then held back from getting enough specific knowledge about the core essentials.

The bottom line is: Accredited IT qualifications tell an employer precisely what skills you have ? the title is a complete giveaway: as an example ? I am a ?Microsoft Certified Professional? in ?Planning and Maintaining a Windows 2003 Infrastructure?. Therefore companies can identify just what their needs are and what certifications are needed for the job. Browse www.CareerAlternatives.co.uk for up to date data.

Charging for examinations up-front and presenting it as a guarantee for your exams is common for many training course providers. But let?s examine why they really do it:

You?re paying for it by some means. It certainly isn?t free ? it?s simply been shoe-horned into the price as a whole. We all want to pass first time. Going for exams when it?s appropriate and funding them one at a time has a marked effect on pass-rates ? you revise thoroughly and are aware of the costs involved.

Isn?t it in your interests to find the best exam deal or offer at the appropriate time, rather than coughing up months or even a year or two in advance to a training course provider, and to do it locally ? rather than in some remote centre? A great deal of money is netted by some training companies that get money upfront for exam fees. For various reasons, many students don?t take their exams and so they pocket the rest. Believe it or not, providers exist that actually bank on it ? as that?s where a lot of their profit comes from. Many training companies will insist that you take mock exams first and prohibit you from re-taking an exam until you have proved to them you have a good chance of passing ? which actually leaves you with no guarantee at all.

Shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds on an ?Exam Guarantee? is remiss ? when study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams is what will really guarantee success.

Ensure all your certifications are commercially valid and current ? don?t bother with studies that only give in-house certificates. The top IT companies like Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe each have internationally acknowledged proficiency courses. Major-league companies like these can make sure you stand out at interview.

US tops Russia, China in women's gym qualifying

LONDON (AP) -- The U.S. women are atop the Olympic gymnastics standings, as expected, with little standing in their way - except themselves.

More than the Russians, Romanians and Chinese, the biggest challenge for the gold medal may come from how they deal with world champion Jordyn Wieber's failure to qualify for the all-around final Sunday. She was bumped by her best friend on the very last routine.

"I'm definitely worried," national team coordinator Martha Karolyi said. "You try to find words ... what do you say? But the fact is the fact. She did her best. She was edged by her teammates."

A heavy favorite for gymnastics' biggest prize - and the attention and riches that go with it - Wieber lost her chance with a series of uncharacteristic mistakes. She wound up with the fourth-best individual score in qualifying, but countries are limited to two gymnasts in the all-around and event finals and pal Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas were ahead of her.

Russia's Viktoria Komova, who was runner-up to Wieber at last year's world championships, is ahead of all three Americans.

The 17-year-old Wieber was sobbing as she made her way through the mixed zone, so distraught she couldn't speak to reporters. Later on Twitter, she thanked fans for "all your love and support."

"I am so proud of our team today and I can't wait for team finals!!" she wrote.

It could be a historic competition for the Americans, who breezed to the top of qualifying with a score of 181.863 points and then waited to see if Russia, Romania or defending Olympic champion China could match it.

No one came close. Russia, runner-up to the U.S. at last year's world championships, was 1.4 points back (180.429) while China (176.637) and European champion Romania (176.264) were well behind.

"We knew the Americans were going to be up there," said Rebecca Tunney of Britain, which was in the same qualifying session as the Americans. "They're going to be unbeatable."

Scoring starts from scratch in Tuesday's team finals. The Americans are the strongest team top to bottom - if they can get their heads around Wieber's woes.

After congratulating Raisman, Wieber rushed off to try to compose herself - unsuccessfully. Her teammates were similarly shell-shocked, with Raisman looking particularly stunned.

"I was really surprised, and I feel awful because she wanted it so bad," Raisman said. "But she should still feel proud because she's an Olympian. We have to stay calm and focused on team finals."

The Americans have only one Olympic title, winning it back in 1996 with the Magnificent Seven. They arrived at the last two Olympics as world champions, only to leave without gold both times. But this team is stronger than the 2004 and even 2008 squads, and has a swagger LeBron and his buddies would appreciate.

Part of that is skill, a collection of gymnasts who do the most difficult tricks in the world yet make them look like child's play. But the Americans' have a unique bond, too, a closeness that comes from traveling the world together for events and spending weeks at the Karolyi ranch for training, little to keep themselves entertained besides each other.

Wieber, Raisman and McKayla Maroney are so close they talk or message each other every day, no matter where they are on earth.

But a shock like this can shatter even the tightest of bonds - if they let it.

"That's what I told her. She's going to handle this with as much class as she handled the victories. Make no excuses," said John Geddert, the U.S. coach and Wieber's personal coach. "The job's not done yet. Team USA has got a big day on Tuesday."

Only four reigning world champions have won Olympic gold, with Ukraine's Lilia Podkopayeva the last in 1996. If anyone was going to avoid the 16-year curse of world champions going without Olympic gold, it was going to be Wieber. She had lost only two all-around competitions - both to U.S. teammates - since 2008, and the only thing more impressive than her gymnastics was her steely composure.

But Wieber appeared vulnerable these last few months while Raisman and Douglas have been on the rise. Wieber's troubles began on vault, when she stepped slightly out of bounds. Then there was a form break on uneven bars, followed by a few wobbles on balance beam. On floor exercise, she got too much power on one of her massive tumbling passes and had to steady herself with a step back - right out of bounds. It was only a 0.10 point deduction, but it put her squarely on the all-around bubble with Raisman, the world bronze medalist on floor, still waiting her turn.

Raisman needed less than a 15 to knock Wieber down to third place, and she got it easily - and then some. She gets such great height on her tumbling passes that you could park a Mini Cooper beneath her; and she lands them with such pinpoint accuracy you want to check her feet for glue. The crowd was grooving and moving to her "Hava Nagila" music, and she lit up the arena with her performance and smile.

As Raisman climbed off the podium, Douglas, Maroney and Kyla Ross greeted her with hugs. By then, Wieber had already disappeared, knowing her chance at the Olympic title had, too.

"I'm devastated for her," said Geddert, who has trained Wieber her entire career. "Things just didn't go her way today. It's not that she had a bad day, it's that other people stepped up and did better."

The sudden shift in fortunes put a damper on what was otherwise a spectacular day for the Americans.

"We knew the Americans were going to be up there," said Rebecca Tunney of Britain, which was in the same qualifying session as the Americans. "They're going to be unbeatable."

The Americans won the world title by four points last year - pretty much a runaway - and they've gotten even better, particularly on vault.

All four Americans do Amanars, one of the toughest vaults in the world - a roundoff onto the takeoff board, back handspring onto the table and 2.5 twisting somersaults before landing. It's got a start value - the measure of difficulty - of 6.5, a whopping 0.7 above the vault most other gymnasts will do, and it gives the USA a massive advantage after just one event.

Even worse for their rivals, the Americans make those vaults look easy. Douglas' toes were so pointed in the air she looked like a directional arrow while Maroney's legs were ruler straight. Each American took a hop on their landing, but it was a minor deduction and the U.S. left the event with a score of 47.633.

Compare that to the Russians, who, despite Komova and Maria Paseka doing Amanars, still gave up 1.3 points on that one event.

They got some of it back on uneven bars, where Komova looked like a ballerina as she pirouetted on the upper bar. But the Americans also had the highest scores on balance beam and floor exercise - even with Wieber, Douglas and Ross going out of bounds.

Give Raisman some credit for that. She may not have Douglas' elegance or magnetic smile, but she is steady and solid, and her routine on balance beam is a wonder to behold. She lands her skills with such assuredness she may as well be doing them in an open field rather than a 4-inch wide beam that's 4 feet in the air, and there was barely a wiggle on her dismount.

Raisman scored a 15.1 or better on all but one event, and made the finals on both floor and balance beam.

"I think that we were really strong out there today," said Raisman, the team captain. "Hopefully, we can do the same in finals."

That depends on how well Wieber can put Sunday's disappointment behind her.

"We will deal with that. We will try to help her as much as possible," Karolyi said. "I would be very disappointed, too. She is reigning world champion, also U.S. champion. Today she wasn't quite as sharp. She was very good, but not quite as sharp and the other two girls surpassed her. So we will give her all the support.

"What can you do? Sport is sport."

Lawmakers press for tough Iran sanctions bill

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans and Democrats are pressuring congressional negotiators to produce legislation imposing the severest penalties on Iran, targeting its energy sector and financial institutions as the United States seeks to weaken Tehran economically and derail its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

With just one week before Congress' August break, proponents of tough sanctions see this as their last, best chance for far-reaching, crippling penalties as recent high-level talks between world powers and Iran have failed to curb its uranium enrichment. Iran insists that its program is solely for peaceful purposes.

"Now is the time to ratchet up the pressure," Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., said in an interview this week.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, have been negotiating behind closed doors for several weeks to reach consensus on sanctions legislation that the House passed in December and the Senate approved in May.

About a half dozen Republicans and Democrats who favor fierce penalties are determined to see the toughest measure yet and have been insisting to negotiators that a watered-down bill is unacceptable.

"We owe it to the American people to exhaust every possible non-military option to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability," Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., said in a statement.

Rep. Robert Dold, R-Ill., and Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., sent a letter this week to the negotiators calling for a final bill that includes a provision declaring Iran's energy sector "a zone of proliferation concern." The blacklisting would bar all transactions with the state-run National Iranian Oil Company.

"This would have the effect of making virtually any transaction with ? and provision of services for ? the firms in Iran's energy sector sanctionable," Dold and Sherman wrote.

The lawmakers also said any legislation should include sanctions on insurance companies that knowingly provide coverage to an entity that has already been penalized.

They also are pressing for sanctions on the directors and shareholders of organizations like SWIFT, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications, unless they stop providing services to the Central Bank of Iran.

"If diplomacy is to succeed in ending Iran's nuclear weapons program, we must enact tough legislation now," the two wrote. "Sanctions are having a real impact on Iran's economy, but not yet enough to change the regime's strategic calculus."

The bill the House passed last year would restrict foreign subsidiaries of U.S. companies from doing business with Iran. Bartering is included among the activities that could be sanctioned, and Americans would be prohibited from conducting commercial or financial transactions with the Revolutionary Guard.

The Senate-passed bill would target Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, require companies that trade on the U.S. stock exchange to disclose any Iran-related business to the Securities and Exchange Commission and would expand penalties for energy and uranium mining joint ventures with Tehran.

The bill also would deny visas and freeze assets on individuals and companies that supply Iran with technology that could be used to crack down on its citizens, such as tear gas, rubber bullets and surveillance equipment.

Iran sanctions is one of the few issues in Congress that has strong bipartisan support as lawmakers look to thwart Iran's nuclear objectives and show Israel the steps they are willing to take on behalf of the Mideast ally. Last year, the Senate voted 100-0 for legislation by Sens. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and Mark Kirk, R-Ill., that targeted financial institutions that do business with Iran's Central Bank.

"Iranians continue to look for work-arounds around financial sanctions," said Mark Dubowitz, a sanctions expert and executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

Lawmakers, including House Republican and Democratic leaders, are hopeful that they can reach consensus on the measure and pass a bill next week.

Be On The Lookout For Teen Drug Abuse

The teenage years are the happiest and toughest years of a person's life. It is also the time when an individual starts his experimentations and explorations; and it happens to most teenagers, but not all. Most successful people is living a very colorful teenage life; and there is a famous tag line that one can incorporate, it with - "drugs, sex and rock-n-roll". While most teenagers grow and live a normal life, others are having a hard time dealing with the changes and it really affects them emotionally. They will then resort to drugs as an escape.

Nowadays teenage drug abuse are becoming more and more common. There are lots of drugs that a teenager can use to fight anxiety and the hopelessness they feel during the emotional years in their lives. Teens can start from cannabis or other prescription/recreational drugs to a more dangerous kind of substance such as narcotics, Hallucinogens, club drugs, and many more. Some teens even get more creative in drug abuse. They use different ways and means just to get away from it all. This is why parents should be on the lookout if their children show signs of drug use and dependency.

When most parents find some proof or signs that their kids are indeed addicted to drugs, they normally panic. But a parent should be responsible and they should think that if they really love their kids then they would want them to recover and live a drug-free life. There are many programs for drug abuse that can provide great information for parents to use in order to make certain that their kids will not be using drugs abusively. They can start with open communication. But if they found out that their kids are already taking drugs then there is no turning back. You can either call authorities right away or review your options for rehabilitation. It is important to act on it immediately and weigh your options right away. You might need to look for rehab facilities online in your area and try to choose the one that applies to your case at hand. If you found one, then go for it.

Sometimes it is difficult to see the signs of teen drug abuse right away. However, if your kid shows more than two signs of drug addiction that you know of, there is definitely a big chance that your kid is already hooked and it is important that they get help as early as possible.

Uloop Blog ? 4 Substitutes for Healthy Cooking

One unhealthy ingredient can completely ruin an otherwise diet-friendly meal. Looking to cut some extra calories or grams of fat out of your favorite recipes? Try some of these easy ingredient substitutes to make your dish that much more healthy!

Spaghetti Squash instead of Pasta
This is a substitute that I couldn?t believe I hadn?t heard of sooner. If you?re craving Italian food but don?t want to ruin your diet, consider cooking up this vegetable instead. A spaghetti squash is a variety of a winter squash that when cooked, the inside strands of the squash fall away like spaghetti. This is great to replace any sort of pasta or use it as a side vegetable dish if you?re sick of your usual broccoli and carrots.

Spaghetti squash by Vegan Feast Catering via Flickr.com

Spaghetti squash is significantly lower in calories than regular pasta. A cup of spaghetti squash has 42 calories while 1 cup of cooked pasta has 221 calories. Another great health benefit of replacing pasta with this vegetable is the amount of carbohydrates. If you are considering a low-carb diet, using spaghetti squash for your ?Italian? meal could save you a little over 30 grams of carbohydrates per cup.

You can find this squash at your local grocery store in the fresh produce section. To cook this squash, preheat your oven to 350 degree Fahrenheit and then simply pop in your squash for 1 hour and 15 minutes. After cooking, cut your squash in half longways and let it sit for a few minutes to avoid getting burned. Remove the seeds, scrape down the side of the squash to get the ?noodles?, and then serve with your choice of sauce and veggies!

Pro tip: If you don?t want to wait over an hour for your squash to cook, cut the squash in half longways, remove the seeds, and place in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 to 40 minutes instead.

Greek Yogurt instead of Sour Cream
Don?t cringe just yet. The first time I heard this ingredient trade I thought there was absolutely no way I would dip a quesadilla in yogurt or put it on top of an otherwise perfect baked potato, but I was pleasantly surprised! It tastes eerily similar to sour cream and doesn?t take away any flavor from your actual meal.

On average, Greek yogurt has 65 calories and 5g of fat in 1/4 cup while sour cream has 120 calories and 10g of fat for the same amount. That?s knocking off almost half the fat and calories for one serving! Not only does Greek yogurt beat out sour cream in calories, cholesterol, protein, and fiber, it also has probiotics, which is great for your digestion. Not a bad trade!

Pro tip: When serving Greek Yogurt on hot meals, wait 2-3 minutes after cooking to add the yogurt on top to avoid curdling.

Almond milk by triathletefood via Flickr.com

Almond Milk instead of Coffee Creamer
This alternative is the second best health wise to drinking your coffee black (which if you can stand, more power to you!). Many people don?t realize that adding creamer to your drink every morning quickly adds up to be a lot of extra unnecessary calories. This substitution comes in at about 35 calories per cup and possesses high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, which are essential for maintaining healthy body tissues.

Almond milk is also a great alternative for vegans, as almond milk contains no animal products. This also means this milk has zero cholesterol and zero saturated fats.

Pro tip: If you get bored of just using plain almond milk in your morning cup of joe, switch it up and buy the chocolate or vanilla flavored variation of this product.

Mustard instead of Mayonnaise in Tuna
Trying out this substitution was initially a bit of an accident. I didn?t have any mayo on hand so I thought I?d take a risk and use Ketchup?s best friend instead. It turned out to be a delicious accident! This ingredient switch-out allows you to no longer feel guilty for smothering extra calories into your tuna salad or sandwich.

While mustard obviously has a distinctly different taste than mayo, it?s a great healthy alternative if you?re willing to ditch the ?traditional? tuna taste. Mustard has little added fat and under 5 calories a serving, while mayonnaise has nearly 100 calories in a teaspoon and is loaded with fat. Mustard has a tangy flavor that sticks out in dishes after only adding a small amount, while it seems that you need a boatful of mayonnaise to effectually taste it. It?s undeniable that mustard is the healthier choice here.

Pro tip: If you?re looking to add a little spice to your tuna recipe, use dijon mustard instead of the original yellow to give it a little kick!

Do your body a favor and try out these healthy substitutes next time you whip up a meal. Cutting calories doesn?t mean you have to cut the taste along with it!

MLS All-Stars set for Chelsea

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Landon Donovan played in MLS All-Star games when they resembled so many of the other ones played in the major sports.

Little at stake, little incentive.

That all changed once Major League Soccer revamped the format and started playing international teams. The best teams from abroad were coming to the U.S. to show they were the best in the world. So far, the MLS, where the quality of play is usually touted as inferior to the quality of the level overseas, has a 6-2-1 edge in the All-Star game.

There's no doubt the players get pumped playing against champions and top-level teams as part of the summer exhibition.

"They're more enjoyable for us," Donovan said. "In the past, when it was an East-West format, you didn't take it all too seriously. The game was, in some ways fun, but it was a little bit false. It isn't exciting for us as playing a real game."

Chelsea of the English Premier League is back for this season's MLS All-Star game Wednesday night at PPL Park. The stadium is home to the Philadelphia Union of MLS, and is located in nearby Chester, along the Delaware River.

This is the seventh time an English Premier League team will play the MLS All-Stars. The MLS defeated Chelsea 1-0 in the 2006 game. Dwayne De Rosario won the game with the lone goal. He's back again, along with All-Star teammates Donovan and Thierry Henry. Last year's game was held at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey and featured Manchester United.

Chelsea, which has won the English top flight on four occasions, is in the midst of a four-game American tour that featured the first soccer match at the new Yankee Stadium against Paris Saint-Germain, and a final exhibition vs. AC Milan in Miami.

Chelsea is using these games as a tuneup for its regular season. Playing well and earning playing time are much important than the result. But sure, the Blues want to come out winners. They understand the MLS has raised its magnitude of players and competition level over its nearly 20-year existence.

"I think it's evolved a great deal," Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard said. "I think David Beckham has been a huge influence on the game in terms of taking it worldwide and bringing a lot of attention. You can feel the level of the quality going up."

It's certainly a hit in Philadelphia, as the Union traditionally attract large crowds. On Wednesday, there should be plenty of Union fans in the stadium - they have their own Trekkies-type of fan cult called the "Sons of Ben" - but also plenty of people pulling for Chelsea, which has taken the U.S. by storm.

Chelsea helped attract a crowd of 38,202 Sunday to Yankee Stadium. An overwhelming blue-clad, pro-Chelsea base made Yankee Stadium feel a bit like home for the Blues, with six sections of loud supporters behind the first-base dugout.

"It's very good to see how this club has grown globally and has a great following," manager Roberto Di Matteo said. "The Yankee Stadium crowd, it was like a home game for us."

The MLS All-Stars certainly don't have the chemistry - developed over 72 hours or so - that a championship team like Chelsea can boast. Plus, D.C. United coach Ben Olsen has to find a way to get the stars back on track after a 4-0 loss last season.

"After talking to every coach and every agent, that almost becomes the toughest part of the deal, trying to make everybody happy," Olsen said. "But I think we've found a pretty good balance. It's worked out where we can get everybody a significant amount of playing time.

"It's not an easy process."

Henry, who plays for the New York Red Bulls, knows all about the premier competition in England. He is Arsenal's career leading scorer and would never rule out a return to his former team.

"Eventually, I'd like to go back to Arsenal," Henry said. "I don't know how. I'm sure that depends on me. I just want to finish my career. I would go back to England, that's for sure, with Arsenal. What? I still don't know what. Coaching does interest me, but I really don't think about it right now."

All he's thinking about is spoiling Chelsea's visit with a big MLS victory.

Batman star Christian Bale visits shooting victims

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Batman star Christian Bale visited survivors of the Colorado theater shooting Tuesday and stopped by a makeshift memorial to victims of the attack that killed 12 people and injured 58.

Carey Rottman, one of those injured in Friday's shooting at a theater showing "The Dark Knight Rises," posted two photos of himself with Bale on his Facebook page. Hospital staff also posted a Facebook photo of the actor with some staff members.

An online campaign had urged Bale to visit survivors of the shooting.

After visiting The Medical Center of Aurora, Bale stopped by a makeshift memorial to the victims near the movie theater. He walked among the 12 crosses erected for each of the slain victims, and many people there didn't realize who he was or chose to leave him alone.

A Warner Bros. spokeswoman told The Denver Post that Bale was representing himself, not the movie studio.

Bale, who stars as Batman in "The Dark Knight Rises," previously issued a written statement saying: "Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them."

President Barack Obama and members of the Denver Broncos also have made hospital visits to some of the survivors.
