London's Graff Diamonds puts Hong Kong IPO on hold

HONG KONG (AP) ? London jeweler Graff Diamonds is putting its $1.5 billion Hong Kong initial public offering on hold because of the steep sell-off in global stock markets.

In a brief statement Thursday, Graff blamed adverse market conditions for the decision to postpone the IPO in the southern Chinese financial center.

"Consistently declining stock markets proved to be a significant barrier to executing the transaction at this time," the company said.

The jeweler, which gets half of its revenue from less than two dozen customers, would have been the latest in a line of foreign brands to go public in Hong Kong. Italian fashion label Prada SpA and luggage maker Samsonite International SA held IPOs last year while U.S. luxury handbag maker Coach Inc. launched a secondary listing.

Foreign companies are seeking to cash in on rising investor interest in China, the world's second biggest economy, and to raise their brand profiles with the country's rapidly expanding pool of newly wealthy consumers.

In a prospectus filed earlier with the Hong Kong stock exchange, Graff outlined plans for a strategic expansion in Asia, focusing on China. Plans included opening shops this year in Hong Kong, Macau, Shanghai and Hangzhou as well as Tokyo. The company also intends to open five more stores in 2013, most of them in Asia.

The company said that demand for diamond engagement rings is rising sharply in China, where ownership levels are still far from rates in the U.S. and Japan.

Graff's decision to yank its IPO appears to have been made overnight as markets in the U.S. and Europe tumbled on intensifying fears over the European sovereign debt crisis and China's slowing economy. Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng Index ended 1.9 percent lower Wednesday and is down nearly 15 percent in the past three months.

Hong Kong newspapers still carried ads on Thursday from the company detailing plans to sell up to 311.2 million shares for as much as 37 Hong Kong dollars ($4.76) a share. That means the deal would have raised up to $1.5 billion.

Founder Laurence Graff, who opened his first two stores in London in 1962, has earned a reputation for dealing in large stones. In 2010, Graff paid $46 million at a Swiss auction for a 24.78-carat "fancy intense pink" diamond, which he immediately named "The Graff Pink."

Last year, the company earned nearly half its $755.6 million revenue from just 20 customers.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Colombian superstar Juanes said singer-songwriter-producer Juan Luis Guerra got him out of his comfort zone when the musician started rearranging his songs for his "MTV Unplugged" taping.

And Juanes was happy to take on the challenge.

"He put me in another place, but for me as a musician, as an artist, I was like: 'Wow. This is a new world. I feel like I can do this,'" Juanes said in a recent interview. "We tried different styles ... (and) I was not used to that kind of arrangement."

Guerra, the Dominican Grammy-winning producer, is known for his bachata and merengue sound. He's won the Latin Grammy for album of the year three times. Juanes, also a Grammy winner, has a sound that is built from rock and metal genres.

The singer said the 14 songs on "Juanes: MTV Unplugged," released this week, are a blend of Latin, jazz, blues, rock, folk and classic sounds. He says the process felt new.

"You know, it's scary, but it's kind of what I'm looking for now," he said. "Just to take the risk and go to different places and try different things. So it's not about fear, it's more about risk."

The first single, "Le Senal (The Sign)," has peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's U.S. Latin Songs chart. The special, which aired Monday, was taped at the New World Symphony Center in Miami Beach, Fla., in February.

Juanes says a new sound will be all over his upcoming studio album, due out next year.

"The 'Unplugged' right now is like a transition album. It's going to give (me) some more time to keep writing my songs and go the studio," he said. "It's going to be completely different, wild and loud, and happy."

The 39-year old is married to model-actress Karen Martinez. He says he's noticed his musical abilities spillover onto his daughters, ages 7 and 8, who are now taking piano lessons. He also has a 2-year-old son, who he says is "crazy with cars and superheroes."

"Unplugged" is the singer's first release since splitting with his longtime manager, Fernan Martinez.

"It's all about cycles, things stop and sometimes things end," he said of the split. "And now I just feel like writing new pages of my life, new chapters. So I feel really positive, and at the same time, really thankful of the past."

Are you ready for the raunchiest, most inappropriate-yet-hilarious father/son comedy of the year? Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg are hoping so with Sandler's first-ever R-rated comedy, "That's My Boy."

MTV News premiered the film as part of our second annual Sneak Peek Week ahead of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, and a slew of the film's stars were on hand to help present an exclusive clip to the lucky audience: Samberg, Vanilla Ice, Will Forte, Ciara, Milo Ventimiglia and Eva Amurri.

The film revolves around deadbeat dad Donny (Sandler), who got his teacher pregnant when he was just a teenager and raised his son Han Solo Berger (Samberg) as a single parent until Han turned 18. After a financial mishap, Donny reappears in Han's life on the eve of his wedding. As Donny tries desperately to reconnect with his son, who has changed his name to Todd, Donny must face the consequences of his terrible parenting.

The clip provides the background — or an explanation of sorts — for how teenage Donny ended up sleeping with his teacher. In a nutshell, the teacher started it. We see teenage Donny (Justin Weaver) sitting in what appears to be detention for writing an inappropriate note about his teacher (Amurri), who asks if he has a crush on her. Donny looks visibly uncomfortable with the question, particularly after she says, "So, you don't want me?" and takes her hair out of a ponytail and twirls it around her fingers.

"No!" says Donny. "Yeah? I don't know what I'm supposed to say right now!"

"Is that gum in your mouth, Donny?" she asks, putting her hand in front of Donny's mouth so he can spit the gum out, which naughty teacher puts into her mouth and begins to chew.

As is the case with many a Sandler comedy, the scene is both funny and gross at the same time.

Assad faces new international pressure after massacre

AMMAN (Reuters) - President Bashar al-Assad faces renewed international pressure to end the bloodshed in Syria but, with peace envoy Kofi Annan visiting Damascus, his government blamed Islamist militants for a massacre in which U.N. observers had implicated his army.

Annan, on a mission from the United Nations and Arab League, is scheduled to meet Assad on Tuesday, when he can be expected to urge compliance with the tattered ceasefire deal which he brokered between government and rebels nearly seven weeks ago.

In Damascus on Monday, Annan called on the authorities to act to end the killing after what the special envoy called the "appalling crime" late last week at Houla, near Hama, in which at least 108 people, many of them children, were killed.

Russia and China, long defenders of Assad against Western lobbying for U.N. sanctions, backed a non-binding Security Council text on Sunday that criticized the use against the town of artillery and tanks - weaponry Syria's rebels do not have.

But on a day when opposition activists said at least another 41 people had died in shelling of the city of Hama, Moscow and Beijing showed little sign of adopting the Arab and Western view that Assad should go. Both sides must come together to ensure a peaceful resolution, Russian and Chinese officials said.

Annan called on the Syrian government to "take bold steps to signal that it is serious in its intention to resolve this crisis peacefully" before adding: "This message of peace is not only for the government, but for everyone with a gun."

In an open letter to the Security Council, Syria's Foreign Ministry flatly denied any army role in the killings at Houla, an atrocity that shook world opinion out of growing indifference to a 14-month-old conflict that has killed over 10,000. Instead, the government blamed knife-wielding Islamist militants.

"Not a single tank entered the region and the Syrian army was in a state of self-defense," it said in the letter published by state media. "Anything other than this is pure lies.

"The terrorist armed groups ... entered with the purpose of killing and the best proof of that is the killing by knives, which is the signature of terrorist groups who massacre according to the Islamist way."

It said three Syrian soldiers were killed and 16 wounded.

SECTARIAN DIMENSION

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon had said U.N. observers who visited the site after the massacre "saw artillery and tank shells and as well as fresh tank tracks", adding that many buildings were destroyed by heavy weapons. But U.N. monitors could not determine who had shot and stabbed many of the dead.

Witnesses and opposition activists said Assad's forces, including "shabbiha" militiamen from his Alawite minority sect, carried out the massacre of the Sunni Muslim civilians in Houla.

The sectarian dimension to a conflict that began with mainly peaceful demonstrations among the Sunni majority has raised fear of a breakdown of society similar to that seen in Iraq - fear which has drawn many Syrians, including wealthier Sunnis, into defense of the four decade-rule of the Assad family.

However, in a sign of cracks in that solidarity, activists reported a widespread shuttering of shops and market stalls in the capital on Monday in what they described as a protest by the Sunni merchant class over the killings at Houla and elsewhere.

One activist, Amer Momen, said security police forced open dozens of shops. But he added: "The merchants are a crucial power centre, ... the core of the silent majority. If they no longer remain silent, then the revolt has hit a milestone."

INTERNATIONAL CALLS

China said it was "deeply shocked by the large number of civilian casualties in Houla, and condemns in the strongest terms the cruel killings of ordinary citizens, especially women and children". Premier Wen Jiabao said support for the Annan truce, and a peaceful resolution, should be stepped up.

That deal calls for heavy weapons to be pulled out of towns and cities, followed by an end to fighting, and dialogue. But the attack on Hama was a reminder that the plan, policed by just 300 U.N. monitors, has done little to stem the violence.

"We are dealing with a situation in which both sides evidently had a hand in the deaths of innocent people," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

French President Francois Hollande and British Prime Minister David Cameron discussed Syria by phone, condemning the "senseless murderous brutality of the Damascus regime".

While both endorsed the Annan plan, they also called for an "orderly democratic transition" for Syria. Hollande said France would call a meeting in Paris of the Friends of Syria - Western and Arab countries that want Assad's rule to end.

Russia has accused the United States and Europe of pursuing Libya-style regime change in Syria, and is wary of endorsing any measures that could become a prelude to armed intervention.

Media reports have suggested that Washington is trying to enlist Russia for a plan of the kind that brought about a handover from Yemen's leader of three decades, Ali Abdullah Saleh, to an administration led by his own vice-president.

Washington has explicitly said Assad must step down, and General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told CNN: "Of course we always have to provide military options and they should be considered."

But he stressed that economic and diplomatic measures should first be used to try to push Assad to "make the right decision".

The opposition Syrian National Council made its strongest call yet for military aid. "The council appeals to all friends and brothers of the Syrian people to supply it immediately with effective means of self-defense before it is too late," it said.

But President Barack Obama, on a day when Americans honored their war dead, spoke of "the light of a new day" with the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq and Afghanistan. He promised a nation, which he hopes will re-elect him in November, that he would not send troops abroad unless "absolutely necessary".

With pastors Joel and Victoria Osteen traveling often for their own ?Night of Hope? events, or for other special speaking engagements, it must be helpful to know so many prominent pastors and speakers who would willingly substitute on any given weekend.

On the weekend of 26?27 May, Lakewood Church will welcome Louie Giglio to the stage. In fact, Victoria Osteen excitedly invited all of her Houston-based Twitter followers to visit the Lakewood venue for the occasion:

Louie Giglio is the pastor of Passion City Church in Atlanta. He is also the founder of the Passion Conference. Back in January, a strange thing occurred at Session 5 of the 2012 Passion Conference event. As was reportedon this blog at that time, speakers Louie Giglio, Beth Moore, John Piper and others engaged in a Scripture reading exercise followed by a time of silence and meditation while the audience of young people was instructed to ?be still? as they waited to ?hear? from Jesus.

How many of you heard the voice of God speak specifically, clearly, directly, and personally, to you? Can you just put a hand up? I?d like you to share it. Can you put a hand up for a minute?

Just want you to look around; that?s people saying, ?God Almighty (pause) the Maker of heaven (pause) the one Who?s sitting on the only throne (pause) that?s not under threat (long pause, audience cheers)?He spoke to me. He spoke to me.?

This exercise can perhaps best be described as ?Lectio Divina lite.? When did Protestant leaders begin to teach that we have the Bible ?plus? anything? God has spoken perfectly in His Word. We have no need to be still and wait for His voice.

It is curious, then, that Giglio, the founder and leader of the Passion event, would also be preaching at the one of the largest Word Faith churches in the country. But then, mysticism and the false, heretical prosperity gospel are both fruits plucked from the same bad tree.

Franchitti wins 3rd Indy 500, gives nod to Wheldon

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Dan Wheldon couldn't win his third Indianapolis 500. Dario Franchitti did it for him.

And if it wasn't going to be Franchitti, then it would be Scott Dixon. Maybe even Tony Kanaan.

No matter what, one of Wheldon's best buddies was going to Victory Lane.

In the end, they celebrated a 1-2-3 sweep that honored D-Dub, their missing friend.

Franchitti stamped his name in the record books by winning his third Indy 500 on Sunday, a day that started and ended as a tribute to Wheldon, who won the race a year ago but was killed in an October crash in the IndyCar season finale. As his three friends lined up with six laps remaining for the final restart ? Kanaan out front, Chip Ganassi teammates Franchitti and Dixon second and third ? they couldn't help but wonder if Wheldon was at play.

"Kind of like old times, the three of us back and forwards," Franchitti said. "I thought, 'Dan is laughing at us right now going at it.'"

It was an absolutely fitting finish, even if the elation for Franchitti's win was tempered by the heartbreak for two other deserving drivers. Dixon, a one-time Indy 500 winner, temporarily relocated his family to St. Petersburg, Fla., to support Wheldon's wife and two sons, and Kanaan, 0 for 11 now at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, had openly wept following the death of his former teammate.

"I think a lot of us that were close to Dan, you know, you wanted it that little bit more," Dixon said. "I guess maybe in the back of your mind, you figured he would probably help you out today, too. I think in that situation, seeing how it lined up with the top three, three of Dan's friends, it was a tough one."

Franchitti won a wheel-to-wheel, last-lap battle, sailing away to the checkered flag when Takuma Sato spun out trying to make one last pass on the inside and slammed into the wall.

The race had shaped into what was expected to be a duel to the finish between Franchitti and Dixon. But when the Scot made his final pass of Dixon with two laps to go, he pulled Sato with him and it sapped Dixon's momentum.

So the last-lap pass attempt was Sato's for the taking, and he couldn't pull it off as he hugged the inside white line through Turn 1. His wheels appeared to touch Franchitti's, he spun hard into the wall, and Franchitti sailed past for the win ? this one, just like the first two, under caution.

Dixon crossed the finish line in second, and Kanaan was third.

"Everybody up there was a friend of Dan's, and that about sums it up. Everybody loved him," Franchitti said as bagpipes played over the public address system.

"What a race! What a race!" Franchitti said. "I think D-Dub would be proud of that one."

Dixon met his teammate in Victory Lane, and Franchitti was reminded of the delicate balance in celebrating a team win vs. beating a teammate.

"I want to beat Scott. I know he wants to beat me. I don't think I've met maybe a more competitive individual, except maybe Dan in the early years," Franchitti said. "He's my buddy. Out on the track, he's competition, but a teammate, and then afterward he's my friend. I see the disappointment in his face. I see the disappointment in T.K.'s face.

"I think both those guys will get more championships and Indy wins. They're just too good not to. When you beat guys like that, I take that as a big accomplishment because, God, they're not easy to beat."

Kanaan, who used a bold move on a late restart to dart from fifth to first, couldn't hold off Franchitti and Dixon on the last restart. He was OK with the final result.

"I don't think it could have been a better result for Dan," Kanaan said. "Wherever he is right now, he's definitely making fun of Sato, I can tell you that, and he's giving Dario a tap on the back for sure, and he was going to call me a wanker that I didn't win this thing.

"I'm glad this is over. I'm glad that now I hope we can all move on and just remember Dan the way Dan was ? a happy guy, a wonderful friend."

Wheldon's wife, Susie, went to Victory Lane to congratulate Franchitti, who hid his tears of joy behind a pair of white sunglasses worn in tribute because they were Wheldon's preference. She then sat next to Franchitti's wife, actress Ashley Judd, in the backseat of the convertible ? the same seat she had a year ago for Wheldon's win ? for the victory lap around the 2.5-mile oval.

The day opened with car owner Bryan Herta driving a single parade lap around Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the car Wheldon drove to victory last year. Fans were given white sunglasses to wear on laps 26 and 98, marking the car numbers Wheldon used in his two wins.

It was Susie Wheldon's first trip to any race track since her husband's death, and she watched from Dixon's pit stand with his wife, Emma.

So it was apt on this hot day ? the temperature hit 91 degrees, just one shy of the Indy 500 record from 1937 ? that one of the most competitive races in history ended with a frantic push from Wheldon's friends. Ten drivers swapped the lead 35 times, shattering the record of 29 in the 1960 race won by Jim Rathmann.

Until the last lap, when Sato made his move for the win, the race was close but uneventful.

The only multi-car accident came when a spin by Mike Conway collected Will Power, who came to Indy as the series points leader and winner of the last three races this season. It was a somewhat frightening accident as Conway, who broke his front wing when he hit one of his crew members on pit road, hit the outside wall and his car tilted on its side before coming to rest. And Helio Castroneves had to deftly maneuver past a bouncing tire that still grazed one of his own wheels.

Besides that, though, the race was slowed by just seven other cautions ? including the one on the last lap ? for 39 of the 200 laps.

Marco Andretti, who went into Sunday believing the race "is mine to lose," was strong at the start, but a series of adjustments were not to his liking and he unraveled on his team radio before spinning to bring out the final caution with 13 laps remaining.

Franchitti and Dixon battled back and forth in the final third of the race, with Sato consistently in the mix. Then came Kanaan, from nowhere it seemed, but he was unable to hang on to the lead on the restart after Andretti's crash brought out the yellow with 13 laps to go.

Andretti said the wreck "definitely rang my bell."

Everyone thought the race would go to a Chevrolet driver for either Andretti Autosport or Penske Racing, which won the first four races of the season and swept the front two rows in qualifying. But in the end, it was three Hondas fighting for their first win of the season.

After the last restart, Franchitti pulled past Dixon for the final time, then went for the lead, pulling even with Franchitti. "Job done," he said he thought, but he went in too low and the tires appeared to touch.

"It looks like he didn't give me enough room to go there," Sato said. "I was a little below the white line. I had nowhere to go."

Sato said the cars never actually hit but the white line marking the inside of the track "was less than touching my own car ? so, you know, I mean almost on the grass."

Franchitti coasted across the line under a yellow caution flag to become the 10th driver to win at least three Indy 500s.

This was the second year in a row that a crash on the final lap affected the outcome. In 2011, rookie JR Hildebrand was leading going into the final turn when his car slammed into the wall, allowing Wheldon to cruise past and take the checkered flag.

"I was side by side with Takuma," Franchitti said. "We hit and I managed to keep it out of trouble."

The victory snaps a disappointing start to the season for Franchitti, who has won the last three championships but seemed stumped by IndyCar's new car through the first four races. In breaking out Sunday for his 31st victory, he's now in a tie with Sebastien Bourdais and Paul Tracy on the all-time wins list.

One more win will move Franchitti into seventh place in the record books. The only drivers ahead of him? The giants of open-wheel racing: three Unsers, two Andrettis and A.J. Foyt, the all-time wins leader.

Space Station's Robot Arm Grabs SpaceX Capsule

If all continues to go well, a private spacecraft sent to orbit by the company SpaceX is expected to dock with the International Space Station on Friday. The mission is historic because it is the first for the commercial spaceflight industry.

Right now, about 200 miles above the planet, a private spacecraft is making history. Dragon, an unmanned capsule sent up by a company called SpaceX, is set to dock with the International Space Station. It will be the first private spaceship to ever dock with that station.

NPR's Nell Greenfieldboyce has been closely following the mission and is here to tell us what's happening right now. Good morning.

NELL GREENFIELDBOYCE, BYLINE: Good morning.

MONTAGNE: So what is Dragon doing?

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Well, it's orbiting the Earth right outside of the International Space Station, attached to the station's robotic arm. So we can see a view sometimes on NASA TV when they show the station's cameras pointing to it. It looks like this white capsule looming in the dark, and you can see the station's long white arm latched onto it.

Just a little while ago, NASA gave the go for space station astronaut Don Pettit to use the arm to grab the capsule. And he did it very quickly, and then he was joking that like it looks like we've got a Dragon by the tail, and he said, boy, you know, this simulation went really well, I'm ready to do it for real, and you could hear people clapping and cheering. So this was a big moment for SpaceX and a big moment for NASA too.

Soon they'll be able to use that arm to move Dragon over to a docking place on the station and actually attach it so that later astronauts can go inside, you know, open the hatch. Dragon doesn't dock automatically on its own. It needs that extra help, you know, with the arm, to put it into the final position. But this is a big deal. No private space ship has ever reached the station before. And it's a first for SpaceX and a first for the world.

MONTAGNE: And how important will this kind of private spaceship be now that NASA's space shuttles aren't flying?

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Well, the plan is for these kinds of private ships to become very important. NASA wants to focus on exploration beyond the station, deeper out into space. So the idea is to let industry take over routine trips up to the station and back. NASA actually has a $1.6 billion contract with SpaceX for cargo delivery. It has a similar contract with another company called Orbital Sciences Corporation.

And there's some other companies that are also wanting to carry people and cargo back and forth to space. Until now it's only been big government space agencies that have done it - only Russia, Japan, Europe, the United States have sent vehicles to the station.

So the success of this mission is a very big deal. It could do away with a lot of doubts about whether private companies are up to this challenge.

MONTAGNE: And Dragon is just carrying food and supplies this time around, this trip. But how soon could it actually carry people?

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Pretty soon. In just a few years. That's the goal of SpaceX. They designed this Dragon capsule with people in mind. So to carry people they would just do modifications of this existing capsule. The next American spacecraft to carry up people could be a private spaceship like this one.

MONTAGNE: And just finally - Dragon, assuming it does dock today as planned and really is there in the space station, when will the astronauts open the hatch and go inside?

GREENFIELDBOYCE: So that's planned for tomorrow. Basically they'd open the hatch, go in and unload all the stuff. And then they'd pack the capsule full of things they want to send home and Dragon would depart from the station next week and splash down in the Pacific, where it would be recovered.

Aviva makes third ?100m-plus loan this year | REAL ESTATE ...

Aviva Commercial Finance has provided ?104m of senior debt for the construction and operation of two new headquarters for West Yorkshire Police Authority.

The 24-year term loan was made by the insurer?s Public Private Finance team and is the third large loan made by the commercial lending business this year.

Last month Aviva provided ?100m of senior debt at a competitive rate of 4.9% to self-storage company Big Yellow and in March, ?145m to the Kirsh Group to buy Tower 42 in the City of London.

The fixed-price loan for the police project was priced at a margin over the 2028 gilt at 2.43%, so is likely to be at a cost to the sponsor of around or just over 5%. The loan will fully amortise over the term according to life-cycle cashflows of the operation of the business.

The borrower is, led by infrastructure investor and developers Interserve and Equitix. The buildings, in Leeds and Normanton, will start coming into use from December 2013.

Aviva, and other insurers active in the UK senior lending market such as M&G, MetLife and latterly Legal & General have been targeting large loans and have been the main source of such finance for borrowers so far this year.

Kevin Sale, commercial finance director at Aviva, said: ?We are really pleased to have been able to extend our lending to the police sector on this project. Aviva Commercial Finance provides long-term, fixed rate debt across a number of sectors and this scheme represents a good long-term investment for Aviva and our customers?.
